"Why do you think no other team is spouting off against the Patriots during this entire circus. The NFL is about money and making more of it."

That's exactly why! The NFL is all about making money and every single owner would love nothing better than for this whole "Spygate" thing to go away because it does nothing but tarnish the integrity of the league. Stop thinking of the NFL as 32 different companies. It's one big company with one singular goal: make as much money as possible.

You seriously thought that winning is what's most important? The NFL rakes in the cash no matter who wins the games, and the nature of revenue sharing ensures that nobody is left on the short end, even if they're not even TRYING to win. Do you honestly think Mike Brown gives a crap about winning? No, Mike Brown is only interested in lining his pockets. Some want to win AND make money, but winning is just icing on a very huge money cake, and is a secondary consideration to keeping the league as profitable as possible. You don't enhance the profitability of the league by openly impugning the integrity of the league from within.

The cover-up is what matters now. Bill Belichick has yet to seek mercy from the National Court of Public Opinion. He has his story, and he's sticking to it. He's going to stonewall it, just as he stonewalls a routine injury inquiry. It's just his nature, apparently.

Interesting question. If Belichick was released, Pat fans might be surprised to find that other team owners would be reluctant to hire him as a head coach in spite of his football genius. Belichick is a pariah for Kraft, and no other team would want to inherit the ‘CHEATER!’ stigma that will follow Belichick wherever he goes. Even if he helps another team to win, other fans will accuse him of being a CHEATER - what owner wants that? It’s just not worth it. Perhaps the only owner in the league who might not give a damn is Jerry Jones - and even that is a stretch. No sane team fan base wants to be accused of winning by cheating. Reasonable Patriot fans are disappointed with Spygate, but most of them are silent on the internet. They don’t want to argue with the fanatical Patriot fans about the wrong way to win - what’s the point? They know their team is tainted, and it takes much of the joy out of rooting for the Pats until the owner takes a stand against cheating.

I would be willing to bet you there are 31 teams lining up to sign Belichick if he got released today. Why do you think no other team is spouting off against the Patriots during this entire circus. The NFL is about money and making more of it. You do this by winning and winning alone. Any owner who doesn't believe this should have his head examined. The crap about cheating is so overblown. Yes he got caught and fessed up to it but let's look at the simple fact - Belichick was able to take his team to an 18-1 record after getting caught, fined and put in under a microscope. Owners will give their left nut to get a coach that can win under these circumstances.

Ryan's a hater. Walsh is hater. Hey, Steve Young must be a hater too for wondering about Weis now. Haters they are, all of them.

"True but tampering with the coach is VERY different then tampering with the game itself. "

Since Miami's punishment was arguably harsher than the Patriots, that's a very debatable point.

"Pat fans might be surprised to find that other team owners would be reluctant to hire him as a head coach in spite of his football genius"

Is anybody surprised that Belicheat didn't become a "genius" until he caught on with the Pats? Or that his ascent to geniushood roughly coincided with the beginning of his tenure with the Pats, which is also when the cheating began? It's not like the guy got anything but his ass handed to him on a silver platter time after time in a pathetically weak division when he was head coach of the Browns. Do the math.

Belicheat as Browns head coach: 36-44, 1-1 in the playoffs
Belicheat as Pats head coach: 91-37, 3 Super Bowl wins

To say that no one remembers the championship losers, who played the Chicago "Black Sox"? I'm guessing most people don't know, but they will recognize the Black Sox. So cheating does have a lasting memory in some cases.

I'm to close to this to give an objective opinion. I'm the same way about Bob Knight, I love to see articles that show his positive side. I have met him personally twice, he went beyond nice to a young kid who walked to him in a restaurant. I also acknowledge that he can be an a-hole at times.

It will be interesting to see the results of the video taping 25 years from now, will no one remember, or will it live on like the Black Sox?

"The problem I have with it is that Spygate is an overblown phenomenon created by the media."

The problem that I have with it is that the Patriots cheated in the first place, homer. It wasn't the media that fined the Patriots and Belichick and coked the Pats a first round draft pick.

"Does he believe Belichik would not be snapped up by another team to the glee of current haters?"

Interesting question. If Belichick was released, Pat fans might be surprised to find that other team owners would be reluctant to hire him as a head coach in spite of his football genius. Belichick is a pariah for Kraft, and no other team would want to inherit the 'CHEATER!' stigma that will follow Belichick wherever he goes. Even if he helps another team to win, other fans will accuse him of being a CHEATER - what owner wants that? It's just not worth it. Perhaps the only owner in the league who might not give a damn is Jerry Jones - and even that is a stretch. No sane team fan base wants to be accused of winning by cheating. Reasonable Patriot fans are disappointed with Spygate, but most of them are silent on the internet. They don't want to argue with the fanatical Patriot fans about the wrong way to win - what's the point? They know their team is tainted, and it takes much of the joy out of rooting for the Pats until the owner takes a stand against cheating.

Many posters here show poor reading comprehension of Ryan's article. His article is written from the perspective of a non-Pats fan. He readily admits that Pats fans will find a way to justify cheating, but for non- fans, the franchise is forever tainted. What is it about that perspective that pro-Patriot posters can't UNDERSTAND? It is a shame that Patriot posters want to give the rest of the US the impression that education in New England is so deficient.

Wow the new york daily news reporter, jo piazza, is pretty hot. I wonder if there is a video of the jets cheerleader tryouts. From the picture included with the article it seems she was making a mockery of the tryouts.

Johnny Carson's old times, Brad. One would hope you don't have an illusion about doing five minutes on a nonexistent show. Any illusions regarding drive-in theaters, paying a quarter at the pump, disco, Don Rickles, polyester pants, Woodstock, women's dresses ending above the knees, Leave it to Beaver, Amos 'n' Andy, flappers, and Woodrow Wilson ... keep to yourself.

ftballsreligion, why would you feel for Brady? The QBs had to have been in on this. Probably a defensive player also. I do feel sorry for the OTHER players.

Ryan's article is confusing. Does he honestly think that in pro sports (or business for that matter)it's more important to be liked than to be successful?
Does he believe Belichik would not be snapped up by another team to the glee of current haters?
And the comparison to Watergate...I must have missed where employee files were deleted to prove Walsh never worked there...or was his image deleted from film so he couldn't claim he taped...and the felony was...what? In fact, didn't Belichik readily admit to taping from the sidelines when questioned. Where's the coverup so prominent in the headline.
Ryan got what he wanted in this article--a mention on PFT in an effort to have some relevance in the sports writer community.
Next up from Ryan "Walsh hopes to move into Belichik's role using all he learned as a 3rd string video assistant".

You can not rationalize spygate and calling it cheating is overblown! Anytime you break rules to gain an advantage that is cheating! Not overblown or anything it is what it is..........He got caught it will forever follow him and give the Pats a black mark for as long as he is there.......That is the problem with the court of public opinion, especially when it happens to a team other than theirs. If their team does it, it is overblown, if it is another team it is not blown up enough. It is perception, I feel for Bruschi, Brady, and the others who will be lumped in with this, whether it is fairly or unfairly. AND YES in public opinion there forever be a "what if" by all those wins and Super Bowls!

Hadley Rille says:

Ryan’s article is hysterical (and by that I do not mean amusing.) How often do football fans think about the Dolphins cheating that cost them a first round draft pick when they discuss the 1972 perfect season? Hell, I’m willing to bet a majority of the people reading this comment don’t even know what I’m referring to.

True but tampering with the coach is VERY different then tampering with the game itself. I can certainyl understand where he is coming from. The problem I have with it is that Spygate is an overblown phenomenon created by the media. People like Ryan (Schlereth, Tomase, most of ESPN, even Tony Mazzaroti) keep it going and push it to new levels. If you take a close look at the facts and keep everything in perspective with the timeframe etc. it was not that big of a deal and the word "cheating" is really overblown. In the end, who cares what other fans think? I dont want my team loved, I want them feared.

"It says a lot about the Bengals franchise that coach Marvin Lewis is referred to as “the guy who has turned around the Bengals” when he’s had one winning record in five years."

Yeah Lewis turned around the Bengals. They used to be a losing franchise, now they're a losing franchise with a police crime unit dedicated solely to them.

I think Belichick will forever be linked to cheating as will any team that associates with him. Pats are in tough spot, they can't fire him because then it will look like he did more than the NFL is admitting and besides he wins there! I think the Pats will be labeled as cheaters as long as Kraft is still owner as well, because in the court of public opinion how you can be the owner/boss of Belichick and not know what he is doing? It is shame because I loved when the Pats finally got good again (not fan or bandwagon jumper), who knew this would be the outcome?! What is going on in sports today??? Truly a shame

Vikings coach Brad Childress says he’s more personable than the media make him out to be: “It’s not like I have any illusions about doing five minutes on Johnny Carson. But these guys — the players — would tell you there’s a different side that they see.”

Now there's a coach in touch with today's players. Not only is Johnny Carson dead (RIP), but he's probably been off the air nearly as long as many of Childress' players have been alive.
