"Does this cover hair extensions or plugs?"--signed Peyton Manning.

Long hair COULD be a safety issue just as the horse collar (Roy Williams' rule) is a safety issue. You could get a hold of a long ponytail and jerk that player's head back so hard his neck snapped.

I love the dreds flowing from the helmets. But it could be a safety issue.

As far as tucking it up in the helmet, there are dogs bred to protect sheep called Komondors. They have dreds all over their body. If a wolf tries to bite, theoretically all the wolf gets is a mouthful of hair. (That's wolf as in the animal, not Wolf as in "All we are is a fart in the wind.") (Though certain sheepherders might prefer the fart in the wind wolf.) If you tuck your dreds into your helmet, that will be just a giant cushion. Of course, then you would need a helmet even larger than the swell-headed Charlie "I thought "Walsh" was just a different pronunciation on what I've done on my last hundred dinner bills at really expensive restaurants" Weiss.

Seriously... could the Chiefs be any more retarded? Every year they propose some brain-dead rule like expanding the playoffs (usually since they're one game away) and now something like this.

Imbeciles.

Guess this means the return of the bobble-head size helmets like the saftey for the Bills used to wear (what's his name?!).

Also, I think the league could also persue this item as a uniform violation, since the long hair covers up the players name. Lord knows they have fined players for wearing socks that are too short/long, pants that are too short, etc.

Let them wear the hair as long as they want....take away the penalty if someone tackles them by the hair, a couple of times being snatched down by the hair and they would get it cut on their own!

Surely the NFL can make a rule that states that a player's name and number cannot be obscured. Then it is up to the player to solve a hair problem with a haircut, tucking the hair inside his jersey or into his helmet, or retiring.

In a league filled with thugs, drug offenses, spygate, domestic violence, guns, the only way the NFL can "act" concernened is to limit people's human freedoms. The public relations arm of the NFL, and that's ALL this is, has to be the worst orginization in the history of business, the popularity of the sport hides all of their inept decisions. These are the same people who brought you NFL Europe, had the brains to send the Miami Dolphins, arguably one of the worst teams in NFL history over to England to promote the sport. But i can see owners setting up barber shops at training camp, and then sending runners in to sweep up the hair, and offer it on NFL.com. I can see it now, but two jersey's get free locks of Al Harris hair, after all it's just about $$$$$$$. What a joke...

Interesting posts. But I'm more concerned that my "rookie" status is now missing.

Long hair, tattoo's and beards...it's all personal preference. Some of these players are coined for their looks. So, it's not always a marketing move by the league to inforce a silly rule such as dress codes, much like the NBA claim uptop a little. Someone also mentioned a racial issue involved. I won't even comment on that because it's the dumbest statement I've ever heard. Tuck your jersey in and be respectable to the officials and you're good to go in my book. Sports icons are role models. Show respect and keep yourself out of trouble and you're a good role model regardless of how you look.

When I went to boot camp, they shaved my head. For all my years in the miliary, my hair was very short. Was it really necesary? mostly no, at times probably. Did i like it? heck no, i'm a headbanger. now that im old & out, i cant have long hair as im half bald. why did i put myself through that? so all the rest of you civs can have long hair if you want.
Are there jobs that need to have it short? yes when it is a matter of serious injury risk to the person, or a risk to others safety. Is that the case in the NFL? no, maybe some, but not going to be any more serious injury than a hard hit or other legal tackle, and its not a risk to others.

This is similar to the NBA's dress code approach, which is to make these guys look more professional a/k/a marketable. This is not a safety issue, this is the league trying to get everyone to look nice for the cameras. Dumb way to improve their image. Try removing the turds from the league instead

"Rookies are making $30MM before ever playing a down in the NFL, and the league is concerned about the length of players’ hair?

Oh, brother."

Agreed 100%. League has more pressing issues to worry about. This is a complete waste of time and serves no purpose

I would have to agree with most of the postings here in one way or another, on one hand you can't force these guys to cut their hair, but on the other hand you could because, as many of the players want to remind everyone of during hold outs is that, this is a business and if this is so, the boss can make his own rules...reiterate the fact that the hair hanging out of the helmet as fair game during a tackle or other form of legal contact and be done with it. If an O-lineman grabs a hold of a ponytail as the DE flys by, guess what...the flag comes out for holding. If a RB streaks past a guy and gets tackled by his hair, tough, he could have grabbed the towel in your belt and made the same tackle...this is a stupid arguement that does not need this kind of attention....Did ya get the memo?

Or... the players/owners could both exercise a little "gamesmanship" and humanity by allowing long hair, and not allowing it to be a "target for tackling/advantage" like you snarly intolerant people suggest.

Why do you even need to see the name anyway? Its always said the number is what matters to officials anyway, and in college some teams have jerseys with no names anyway. This is just another cop out reasoning that doesn't make sense when you give it the logic test.

They want to say "we don't like it, we'd rather you all look like jesus choir boys and since we pay you, we own your soul" but they know that wouldn't go over as well. Hence the illogical "reasoning" behind it.

Player safety is b.s. Has anyone had any serious injuries from a hair pull? I don't think so.

Cultural war, really, between "real world current day reality" and "filthy rich, old and delusional control freaks"

You can dress a turd in a tux, and he's still a turd. Image is NOT everything, as tv marketing campaigns would "like" to you believe (i certainly do not subscribe to that thinking, personally)

And i don't give much credibility to those that do, either. ;)

"Many work environments require codes for dress and appearence. Hair leanght facial hair, visable tattoos ect. I have no problem with the employer setting guidlines for the empolyees. If they don’t like it, do what I did, go work for someone else."

I couldn't disagree more. This is football. These guys are not working for Bank of America or Microsoft. Just let them play.

Easy solution: Declare, or restate if it is already, that hair outside the helmet is fair game. A few tackles via dreadlocks/ponytail will cause the player to rethink their fashion choices. If they choose to keep the hair then they are at a disadvantage. Play on.

/it usually is defensive players though.
//so get a hand full of hair while blocking.

Could the hair be tied and tucked inside the jersey? Couldn't they be fined for a uniform violation for say covering up the name on their jersey if they refused?

They wouldn't be punished because of the length, they'd be punished for it being down. Just like my privates, I'm not punished because of the girth, it's when I don't cover it that is the problem.

Rookies are making $30MM before ever playing a down in the NFL, and the league is concerned about the length of players' hair?

Oh, brother.

Since he is still new at his position, Goodell does not want a hair apparent.

Personally I say let the opposing players yank it out of their heads.

Get over yourselfs owners and coaches. Its a new time and long hair is in now of days. If they are not careful this can turn into a racist situation, because mostly black players have long hair. Its part of haritage and if you make them hide that, what is next: no team prayer, no tattoos should be showing, you cant thank god for letting you have the chance to win a superbowl. You are already being called the no fun leauge. Stop being stupid and worry about something else.

For players like Al Harris, they'd probably need a helmet so big to fit all that hair under it, he'll look like some human bobble-head doll out there on the corner.
