Dan Morgan, the Pro Bowl linebacker whose seven-year career has been plagued by injuries, has decided to retire.
Morgan played his entire career with the Panthers, but he signed a free-agent contract with the Saints on March 11. The Saints made the official announcement today.
“When we signed Dan, he was committed to making a fresh start, and he was making every effort to rehabilitate the leg injury that he suffered last year,” said Coach Sean Payton. “But it wasn’t responding as well as he had hoped it would. We wish him well in his continued recovery, and he will be remembered for the excellent player he was during his career.”
Morgan played just four games in the last two years because of injuries. He suffered a partial tear of an Achilles tendon in 2007, and he had several concussions.
The Panthers made Morgan the 11th pick in the 2001 NFL draft, and he entered the starting lineup immediately, played well when he was healthy and was chosen to the Pro Bowl following the 2004 season. For his career, he played in 59 regular-season games and missed 53.

I wish you well Dan, as a Panther fan thanks for memories. Its a shame, Morgan had the ability to be a HOF linebacker but injuries were constant

Don’t forget his Super Bowl performance against the Pats where he racked up like 20 solo tackles.

It’s the best thing for him. He was one bump away from erasing his hard drive.
I would have liked to have seen him retire in a Panthers’ jersey, but it is nice to have N.O. in a bit of a bind.

how did he leave them in a bind? correct me if i’m wrong but morgan was a MLB and was going to play behind Jonathan Vilma anyway. Not that he wouldn’t get a lot of PT but this in no way leaves the Saints in a bind.

Hopefully it wasn’t too late with all the concussions. Odell to the Saints?

I’m glad he made the tough decision to retire. Must have been an agonizing past few days for him - as much as a gym rat that he is ..
Past couple years .. every time he was able to play, I held my breath every time he went in (well, not for the entire time he was in). Always, one hit away from disaster.
Best of luck, Dan .. in wherever the path leads you …

themadcatcher, the Saints were planning to move him to OLB to get both him and Vilma on the field…This is sad news when a good player and person is forced to retire early.

Without Dan we are stuck with Snale. I hope well for Dan Morgan, I hope he does well with whatever he does. But isnt it convenent that Odell is free. With Vilma and Fujita, Odell would fit in perfectly. Hopefully he won’t do anything that gets him in trouble, this is new orleans

At least he had his chances. The Panthers gave him a chance to return from his concussions when there was a reasonable argument for pulling the plug altogether. And the Saints were willing to give him an opportunity as well. His body couldn’t keep up with his heart and passion for the game anymore, and so at least he can say he gave it all he had. Thanks for the effort, Dan.

LaVar Arrington still doesn’t know who Dan Morgan is.

That’s a shame. Reminds me of John Offerdahl. Great talent, but just can’t stay on the field.
