Bills receiver Lee Evans is a year away from free agency. But the team isn’t waiting for Evans to get close enough to the market to smell the beef and cheese.
Evans confirmed on Monday, according to the Associated Press, that the Bills have made him an offer on a long-term deal.
And Evans doesn’t sound like a guy who is looking to leave. “With the talent we have on offense, we certainly have the ability to be as good as we want to be,” Evans said. “The biggest thing for us now is to gain confidence. If we can do that, we’ll be a very good offensive team.”
Evans, the No. 13 overall pick in the 2004 draft, is due to earn a base salary of $2.25 million in 2008.

For the sake of fantasy owners everywhere, let’s hope this guy returns to his 2006 form.

Evans, who amassed his best numbers with JP Losman at quarterback, seemed at least implicitly critical of Trent Edwards last season. I wonder whether Evans thinks Losman will get another shot as the Bills’ starting quarterback. I realize that’s not the way the Bills are heading moving into this season.

Lee Evans deserves a nice extention. He has game-breaking ability and I consider him an elite wideout. Most of all, you don’t even hear him complain about anything (even with a sub-par performing Bills offensive squad). You can tell this guy is ateam-first guy.

He also said “It can’t get too much worse”.
In a related note, that’s what she said.

Great move by the Bills. They cannot afford to have a young stud of a talent like Evans hit free agency. When your in the cellar like the Bills you’ve got to keep your talent, especially young talent to have a chance.

Need to get it done. He’s currently the only Bills receiver that’s shown he can play on the outside. Plus if the Bills wait a year he’ll probably be coming off of a much better statistical year with Hardy now drawing some coverage, and Edwards and Lynch in being more established.

I hope he is ok with being paid in Canadian dollars!

Freakin Sweet! Great timing, not rushed but not lingering too close to the preseason. Hears hoping it’s around 6yr 48+mill with 18.5m guaranteed. That’d be just great.

Why not? The Canadian dollar is worth slightly more than the US dollar.

I meant more like because the Bills will be in Canada in a few years, although the value aspect is true as well.

Man, Lee Evans may not come cheap to the Bills, but I assure you you’ll be able to snap him up in the mid/late rounds of your Fantasy Football draft this year. Most people are disgusted with the Bills offense, and Evans stock is way undervalued. I can’t wait for football season…

Paying Evans as if he is an elite receiver is a bad move by the Bills. Yes he is fast, but he has not proven he can dominate a game. The Bills passing game was bad last year, but Evans did not help. Let him prove his worth this year and then either offer him a fair contract next winter or Franchise him. That would make this a contract year for Evans and if you tag him, next year would also be a contract year. Players tend to play much better in contract years. They should make him earn his money. The Bills overpaid for Schobel last year when he had 3 years left on his deal and they should not do it again.
