A league source tells us that the Bengals plan to release linebacker Odell Thurman on Monday.
But we’re told that the move isn’t the result of any relapse of substance abuse or renewed misconduct by the talented-but-troubled defender, who missed most of the past two NFL seasons due to a suspension. Instead, the Bengals allegedly are cutting Thurman for missing voluntary workouts last week.
Thurman participated in a rookie minicamp. After his grandmother recently died, he had to travel to Georgia for the funeral. Betty Thurman raised Odell, whose mother died in 1993 and father died five years ago. Betty Thurman was seriously ill when Odell was reinstated last month by Commissioner Roger Goodell.
The Bengals, per the source, told Thurman to come back to town for so-called Organized Team Activities one day after his grandmother’s funeral. When he got to Georgia, however, Thurman realized that he couldn’t leave so quickly.
Advised that he couldn’t make it back, the Bengals said that he either had to return for the OTAs, or he’d be released. We’re told that his locker was cleaned out on Tuesday, May 13.
Bengals Public Relations Director Jack Brennan told us by phone that he’s not aware of any coming roster moves regarding Odell Thurman.
If the contention regarding the reason for the release is accurate, the move would be a clear violation of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, since the workouts were voluntary in nature. Over the past several years, a chronic failure by the NFL Players Association to enforce this rule has contributed to an atmosphere in which teams often think that they can treat attendance at the voluntary drills as mandatory — and thus they often do.
It’s presently unknown whether Thurman will file a grievance due to the decision to cut him. His better move might be to try to latch on with another team, and continue his attempt to fulfill the promise that he showed as a rookie in 2005.

Yikes, that would be cold hearted for the Bengals to do. It seems suspicious, though. I think it’s more likely that Florio’s source is BS. If this story is BS, Florio has as much credibility as a 15 year old blogger. If it’s true, Mike Brown is an idiot.

I already have as much credibility as a 15-year-old blogger.
Don’t rule out the possibility that the story of the Bengals’ plans is being leaked specifically to get the Bengals to change their minds, if there’s enough of a public outcry today. Our friends at 1530 the Homer in Cincy are already complaining loudly about the move.
Translation — if they end up not cutting him, it doesn’t mean they weren’t going to.

Huh?? (assuming that this is the full story)
What kind of jackasses are running the Bengals. Seems like the team has taken on the Joan Crawford mentality for discipline (i.e. “No wire hangers”).
What is next?
Spit on the field; get your tongue cut out?

Double Dip (obligatory Seinfeld reference) lose a finger?

hmm
I’m not for the skins signing turds but he could be picked up for vet min and sit behind and learn from London Fletcher at MLB,and Fletcher is known as being a pretty good influence. Thurman could also challenge for playingtime at OLB.

Jeez. I wonder if the source is his agent. Who else would know that other than Thurman and the club?

I would sign him for the vet minimum and play him…….aside from alcohol this guy is good. If the Bengals cut him and keep Chad they are as dumb as they have always been given credit for. One misses VOLUNTARY workouts and the other is going to be the biggest distraction this side of TO when he was an iggle! Doesn’t make sense to me.

Man that’s messed up. Not only is it ridiculous considering the OTA’s were voluntary, but because he didn’t feel he could get back the next day after the funeral? That’s just cold-hearted.

I think Marvin Lewis is trying to take back this team. Maybe Thurman said he would be there and then didn’t show, or call. Odell is already on a short leash, he needs to dot his i’s and cross his t’s. That being said, his grandma raised him and in this case he deserves a little compassion. UNLESS, there is more to this story…he is a recovering alcoholic. If this caused a relapse, he should be cut.

Had the agent not leaked this info, then the Bengals could have cut Thurman with very few questions asked, given his off the field history and suspension.
Now the Bengals have three options:
1- cut Thurman and give a reason other than missing OTA’s
2- keep Thurman
In all likelihood, if the team was going to cut Thurman for something as small as missing OTA’s, then they will still cut him. This simply clears his name of wrongdoing and helps him sign with another team.

I doubt this is going to happen (at least not immediately). However, if I’m wrong and they do cut Thurman this week, he would be foolish to protest it. If the Bengals have decided to cut him, they will do it sooner or later. It’s better for Thurman if it’s sooner.

Even if they were voluntary workouts, odell needed to be there, he has been out of the league for two years. He is not a 5 year starter. He is a player who has messed up in his life and who knows if it was because of his absence. Marvin has said that it was because he has not fulfilled expectations since being reinstated. That could mean any number of things. I heard he was addicted to meth and maybe he is still drinking and doing drugs. I applaud Mike Brown and The Bengals Organization for ridding themselves of odell and chris henry. Now they can concentrate on getting back on track.
