Former Texans center Steve McKinney, one of the first members of the Houston franchise, is expected to sign with the Miami Dolphins.
“It’s hard for me to leave Houston because this is my home, but I think Miami is a good opportunity for me,” McKinney said. “They’ve got a new group, a good organization, and I think they’re going to turn it around pretty quick.”
McKinney was released by the Texans earlier this year, and at the time there was talk that McKinney could re-join the Texans after looking for other opportunities.
Apparently, McKinney found another opportunity that he liked better.
McKinney will be joining the franchise that drafted his brother, Seth, in 2002, the same year that Steve jumped from the Colts to the Texans.

It’s very possible that he earns a starting guard spot. Right now, the Dolphins are looking at Justin Smiley in one spot and then Shawn Murphy/Donald Thomas/Ndukwe at another. At the very least, he’ll be some depth, which the Dolphins do need along the offensive line.

The talk about the Texans possibly bringing McKinney back was just that (talk).
If the Texans brought McKinney back, even at an NFL minimum salary of around $820,000 (or whatever it is with his tenure) with a small signing bonus, he would cost the Texans more on the cap this year than if they had never released him.
The Texans are currently (presumably) carrying all of McKinney’s $1.5 million in dead money on this year’s cap, so bringing McKinney back at $820k with a small signing bonus would put his ‘08 cap hit at over $2.3 million. That wasn’t going to happen - considering cost was one of the reasons for his release in the first place. That and the torn ACL suffered early in the ‘07 season - and the fact that at this point in his career he’s probably not an Alex Gibbs fit in terms of agility.

I am sure you’all noticed this, but here it is anyhoo.
If you take the center letter of Steve McKinney, the letter ‘C’, then you get his positional notation, ‘C’ for center.
ARRRGHHHH!! Please start the season, before I go totally nuts!

Cut Rex Hadnot so we can draft Jake Long… Now we drafted Jake Long but his #77 jersey number is being worn by Drew Mormino… Cut Drew Mormino so Jake has his #77… Now sign McKinney to wear Jakes old number #79.
Makes total sense to me (groan!)
