Several readers have sent to us the full, 15-minute interview of Patriots coach Bill Belichick by Armen Keteyian of CBS.
Here it is.
One key excerpt that didn’t make it onto the CBS Evening News was Belichick’s assertion, right out of the gates, that “more than one person” had told him that Matt Walsh had claimed that he had videotaped the Rams’ walk-through practice prior to Super Bowl XXXVI.
“Now that story has changed,” Belichick says. “It seems like he has an agenda.”
This contention meshes with our strongly-held belief that Walsh was the source for the February 2 story in the Boston Herald that the walk-through practice had been taped. So, apparently, Walsh lied to John Tomase of the Herald, and then presumably told the truth to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell on May 13.
As to the videotaping of coaching signals, Belichick emphasized that he believed that he read the rules to prohibit the use of video shot in a game during that game. And Belichick insisted that the Pats never used the video during the same game.
Regarding the September 2006 memo, Belichick said that he should have gone to the NFL and asked whether his past approach was still acceptable.
Keteyian then pressed him on the language of the memo, in an exchange that should have made it into the “real” broadcast, but didn’t.
(As to our summary of the excerpt of the interview that aired on Friday night, we based our conclusion that Belichick conceded that he became aware in September 2006 that the practice was against the rules on this narrative statement from Keteyian: “Belichick acknowledged when the rule was clarified by the league in September 2006, outlawing videotaping of any type during a game, he stepped over the line.” Belichick didn’t actually say that; he claimed that he should have sought clarification from the league, and then Keteyian pressed him on whether, given the plain language of the memo, clarification of any kind was needed.)
Belichick’s primary argument in support of his position that they didn’t know the practice violated the rules was that the taping occurred out in the open. But, as we see it, the alleged lack of secrecy doesn’t mean that Belichick believed the tactic was fully within the rules. Perhaps there was no way to covertly tape the signals, and that the better approach was to tell Walsh to do what he did while acting that he was doing something that he was allowed to do.
If, after all, no one complains about it, then there will be no problem. The fact that Walsh wasn’t wearing a trenchcoat and a fake moustache doesn’t mean that the Pats weren’t preparing, if push came to shove, to say that they weren’t doing what they were doing.
Keteyian and Belichick also debated the question of whether the videotaped signals had any real benefit, and Belichick pointed out the reality that the information that was taped was available to anyone in the stadium could have seen the signals that were being taped.
With the benefit of seeing and hearing the full interview, we think that Keteyian did a fair and proper job of grilling Belichick, and that whoever cut the thing together for use on the CBS Evening News might have believed that the end result would make Belichick look good, when in reality it made him look bad.

Nobody is ever going to change their minds.
But I don’t understand how many lies Walsh can get in without at least some people questioning that maybe it’s not all black and white.
Belichick definitely stepped over the line.
At the same time, what great lengths did Walsh go through to not get caught?
In full gear and in view of 70,000 people?
Sign stealing: “It’s not DNA.”

Not a bad interview. Almost confirms suspicions that Matt Walsh lied to the Boston paper, but the conspiracy theorist in me knows that that nugget could have been suggested by the organization to put further doubt on Matt Walsh’s credibility.
I still think Bill Belichick is the fall guy for his former boss, but maybe I’m just silly…

Ok, I haven’t watched the whole thing yet, but I have to laugh. Belichick questioning Matt Walsh’s integrity?! And WHO got caught cheating? Matt Walsh didn’t catch him, NFL Security did.
Although I have to admit, I doubt Walsh is the most credible person in the world, I still have to go back to this: If Walsh had an axe that he intended to grind over being fired, he would have begun this “smear campaign” when the Patriots began winning Super Bowls. Why wait 6 years?
Also, nice touch putting Brady’s helmet and jersey behind Armen, while inserting the jersey behind Belichick. Trying to use an unspoken suggestion that golden boy Brady and golden boy Belichick are synonimous? Uh… no. Brady is a pansy, whiny boy and Belichick… well he’s a cheater.

It seems to me, the 3 superbowls arent tainted. The By Laws seem to say it was legal before 2006.
2001 2003 2004 SuperBowls were legit.
Thats enough for me as a Pats fan.

Would someone please tell me why the Memo said: “Assessibility to the coaching staff during the game.”
What does that mean. It hints to me that if the coaching staff doesnt have access to the tapes, its okay.
Why is that language in the memo?

Wow, just watched the full video, and I am astonished by BB’s admission to video taping “probably more than half” of the games from issuance of the memo to being caught by the Jets in Sept ‘07. Then he goes on to minimalize the extent of use of the signals in game planning by saying “we never based anything we did on the signals”. How can this possibly be true?! You mean to tell me that he had multiple staffers tape and write down the signals just to give them something to do? You mean that knowing what defense or offensive set is being called is not of value? You mean knowing what the defensive call may be is not of value? Come on! We are not all as stupid, ignorant or moronic as BB would have us to be. In otherwords, we are not all Patriots fans.
His arrogance really shines through. You can see his disdain for even having to be there. Obviously someone thought it would be good for him to go on the record to try to put this to rest. Bad call there! If anything, his attitude and continue lying and dinegrating of the game really galvonizes people.

If Matt Walsh was the source of the Rams walkthrough then why wouldn’t John Tomase reveal his source? Tomase states “I had repeatedly heard that this walk-through had been taped, and from people I trusted. Eventually I accepted it as fact and stopped questioning the assertion,” Tomase said.
If it was Walsh why wouldn’t he reveal his source….if Walsh lied to him then the journalistic promise to not reveal a source should be removed.

If the conclusion is that the CBS interview made Bill Belichick look bad, then I disagree. Obviously, the Pats got caught cheating, and got punished heavily for it.
But clearly, the team was and is capable, and their Super Bowls aren’t tarnished, and that 18-1 season where the Pats were the best team in the NFL isn’t tarnished, either.
Belichick did an outstanding job during the interview

Wow! The 3 minute cut version of the interview was a real hatchet job especially when Belichick talks about Walsh’s credibility. They cut the two most powerful arguments Belichick made for Walsh not having credibility. I’m surprised since Belichick saying he has heard from several people Walsh claimed he had the tape of the walkthrough is pretty significant news.

I think the full interview was heavily edited because Belichick came off as a rambling, defensive, dishonest and contradictory person. The editor did his best to change the overall impression of the interview, but the result was focused on Belichick’s defamation of Matt Walsh. Mike, you conclude that Walsh lied to Tomase in February, but it is also possible that Walsh reached agreement with the NFL to suppress any tape he might have made. In that case, he told Tomase the truth, and agreed to allow the NFL to claim that Walsh never made any tape, or knew of anyone else who made a tape. If ‘more than one person’ heard that Matt Walsh claimed to have made a tape of the walkthru, does it seem logical that he would not have corrected that impression ( after the Tomase article)between February and May 13th? IMO, a deal was made that was both beneficial for Matt Walsh, the legacy of the Patriots, and the image of the NFL. The NFL could not allow such a walkthru tape to become public.

If the Patriots never tried to conceal their improper taping, why didn’t more teams do the same thing? There are thousands of tapes of games - every game is taped by every team and even NFL Films - that would indicate if cameramen of other teams filmed on the sidelines ( if it was a widespread practice). If it was permissable in Belichicks mind, why were other teams complaining to the league office about the Patriots before they were finally caught red-handed in Sept 2007? What proof does anyone have that the Patriots didn’t use videotaped information in the current game? Why wouldn’t they if they could? Walsh stated that back in a 2000 Bucs game, a QB told him that the offense knew 75% of the defensive plays (before they were run) from the sideline signals. If teams change their signals every game - as Belichick contends - then the Pats knew 75% of the current game signals. It seems pretty clear that they are gathering current game signals and using them.

“it is also possible that Walsh reached agreement with the NFL to suppress any tape he might have made.”
It’s also possible, and about as likely, that all the moon landings were faked and filmed somewhere in the Arizona desert.
The irrationality of some people who comment on this web site is stunning.

The full interview is astonishing, and actually very different than the 3-minute edited version. Let’s see which version ESPN uses to write up their summary later.
My thought: Damn. Wish he’d done this earlier. Belichick makes his points cleanly and I think reasonably. Clearly he screwed up by not going to the league in 06, but I would REALLY (hint, Florio) like to see the language of the NFL bylaws that he cites in order to understand if he has a point prior to the 06 memo.
I also think he makes a good case about the signals being out in the open and available for ANYONE to see and record - just not on tape. There is a certain veracity to the fact that the Pats did their taping out in the open, and that other coaches waved to the camera. It’s hard to believe that this is arrogance - you can’t in one breath claim that the Pats were all cloak-and-dagger instructing Walsh not to wear Pats gear and to lie about his intent, and then turn around and call them arrogant for taping in plain view from the sidelines and end zone.
It’s also worth noting that, given PLENTY of opportunity, the Pats have NOT ONCE brought up instances of other teams cheating even though Walsh himself said he saw other teams recording him and the Pats signals. And I see not one member of the media doing any investigation into that - just more cries for digging deeper in NEw England.
Irritating, tiresome, and useless. Time for this to die.

He’s been telling enhanced stories for years to everyone and cousin Leroy about his ‘importance’ to the Patriots.

BTW, if more than one person told Belichick that Matt Walsh claimed to have made a tape of the Rams walkthru, why doesn’t Belichick name one person - anyone - who told him this? Why hasn’t ONE PERSON come forward to reveal that Matt Walsh once told him/her that he made such a tape? There seems to be no hard evidence that he ever made such a claim - just speculation that he did.

Who said Walsh was the source of the “tape” of the Rams practice?
The fact is he was there along with a number of other Pats employees, and Martz claims neither he nor the Rams security were aware of it.
Someone explain that. Who needs a tape when you have several spies at the opponents practice. A video camera would have raised some alarms. They had gotten away with being able to watch, why spoil it by trying to record it openly.
focusing on a tape that may or may not even exist instead of the flimsy excuses and contradictions is not the way to clear the crud off Pats cheating legacy.
18 straight wins with Moss and Welker setting records does not erase it either. That was fun to watch, but not as fun as Bill being exposed as a fruad.

FreeAgentPro,
Why didn’t other teams do the same thing? Because other teams DID do the same thing. Jimmy Johnson admitted to doing it. He said Marty Schottenheimer did it. Matt Walsh said he saw the Jets doing it.
Funny, you would believe Walsh on the “75% of the signals” part of what he said yet choose to ignore that Walsh said he had seen at least one other team (the Jets) taping signals.

An another thing. Per Belichick, the Pats have now cleaned up their act and tightened up the organization. PRIOR to Spygate, the Pats have made tampering accusations and got.. nothing.
As a Pats fan, I can’t even articulate how depressed, angry, and ashamed I’ve been over the past year because of this. I am not delusional, I’m willing to say that my team broke the rules, got caught, and got punished, and it sucks.
But now let’s be clear. I want it ALL cleaned up. MY team got caught. MY team got fined. MY team lost a first rounder. And yet there have been plenty of allegations and even outright admissions by other teams and coaches past and present of similar shenanigans. I swear to God Almighty that the next time there is even a HINT of practice against the rules by ANY team, I’ll be writing non-stop letters to the NFL and every media organization on the planet. The SAME scrutiny, the SAME adherence to the Bylaws, the SAME rush to judgement, and the SAME punishment. Pats fans should be on the NFL now like white on rice.

Walsh never claimed to be the source of the tapping of the Rams supberbowl.
Pat’s Fan here are the facts.
1. Even thu the Pats claimed that what they were doing wasn’t helpful the continue to film for 8 years and won 3 super bowls during that time period and continue even after Walsh left.
2. HBO realsports verified with former players who agree with Walsh that the taping was VERY HELPFUL.
3. The commissioner does not believe BB explanation of the events. So in other words he is calling BB a liar.

Belicheat should have learned from Roger Clemens. Keep your mouth shut. Facts don’t matter although I am on the side of he straight up knowingly cheated. In the court of public opinion the Patriots and Belicheat are guilty. They will forever be known as tarnished. He should have said nothing and let it die, just like what Clemens should have done. According to the public opinion, the more you get defensive the guilty you are. Just the way it is.

These comments are hilarious. You can spot Pats fans from a mile away. They are the ones saying BB made his points well and looked good. I understand being aggravated that no other teams are being investigated, and some of it may be unfair, but BB made this bed, and now he’s being forced to lie in it.
I also don’t know how it was unclear, once the memo was issued, that their practices were illegal. It seems like he knew and knew the league was onto him. Continuing to tape under those conditions suggests, to me at least, that the tapes were of more value than he suggests- further supported by the point made earlier that several members of the staff were used.
