Packers quarterback Brett Favre is retired. Colts quarterback Peyton Manning isn’t so sure he believes it.
Manning recently explained that he usually writes a letter to players who have retired. [Editor’s note: A letter? Does he send it by Pony Express?] Manning says he has yet to pen a letter to Favre.
Manning doesn’t have any inside info; he’s just taking the same wait-and-see approach that the rest of us have adopted, given Favre’s equivocation on the subject in a couple of interviews since he announced his decision to leave the sport.
Video of Manning’s remark can be seen on NFL.com.

If I am not mistaken, I thought that Favre hadn’t yet filed his retirement papers yet, so technically he isn’t retired. Why is this news?

Well, if he writes letters to retired QB’s as a show of respect. I wonder what a phone call signifies? He had a 15 minute phone call with Vikings QB Tarvaris Jackson last season…. I guess Peyton just wanted to give ol’ TarJack his 15 minutes of fame.
I’d also love to know what he wrote to Quincy Carter.
Hey Quincy!…Keep puffin’ the magic dragon! Rickey Williams is giving you the hook’em horns sign! I never touched the stuff but maybe that’s why I’m still in the league.
Your pal,
Pompous Peyton

The line was right there and I missed it….
Peyton Manning writes letters to QB’s who have retired and apparently phones them when he thinks they should. Sorry, TarJack.

As a Packer fan, I wish the Packers would retire Favre’s number the first day of training camp and put an end to all of this B S.

This is not news. He knows nothing so who cares? Farve is retired. He was a great player (with flaws) but he’s done and I don’t know why everyone seems to think otherwise.

Its idiot non-stories like this that make everyone talk and talk about Favre. If the media didn’t blow something as mundane as this out of proportion this Favre thing would go away.

I’m not entirely convinced either, and the reason is whenever you hear Favre speak about his retirement, he doesn’t sound all that convincing. He doesn’t have that final, “I’ve made up my mind for good” look about him. He appears very unsure and who knows with the right offer, he might unretire.

I bet he did write one to Ryan Leaf…
Dear Ryan,
I know when asked what you would do if you were the first pick in the draft you said you’d probably party with your friends in Vegas. Did you actually do that? You lost your skills there, apparently.
What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas…like maybe your skills.
Now, what are you? The golf coach at West Texas A&M? What did you do when you found out you got that job? There’s no “strip” there and I’ll bet all your old friends ditched you when you became one of the biggest bust’s in draft history. Did you grab a day old donut from the local Texaco?
They say nobody remembers who finished 2nd… I do!
Love,
Peyton #1

What the hell does 5 head know about Farve? Munster needs to worry about the silent killer Marvin Harrison.
I personally believe it is a shame that Farve has called it quits. I know it is hard for a fan to understand when an athlete as good as Farve with gas left in the tank calls it quits. Barry Sanders is another that comes to mind.
Farve and Sanders are two players that I really loved to watch and became huge fans of even though they were not on my team. They were hard not to root for.
I could see brett hanging those shoes up if he was on a bad team or his skill have fallen apart. But he is on a good team and could very well get to the superbowl next year. 1 more year Brett, have a farewell tour.
