In a Q&A item on the Bears’ official web site, spotted by the folks at ESPN.com, head coach Lovie Smith says that running back Cedric Benson is still the team’s starting running back.
But the full context of Smith’s comments is hardly a glowing endorsement of Benson, or a declaration that he’ll be the No. 1 tailback when the regular season begins.
Asked whether there will be an open competition for the starting running back, Smith said: “[Rookie] Matt Forte has never played a down for us here. He’s like all other rookies, starting from the bottom and working his way. Cedric was our starter last year, and he’s our starter right now. For someone else to be the starter, they’re going to have to beat him out. I’m going to put Adrian Peterson and Garrett Wolfe in there also. We like what Matt Forte brings. When you draft a player that high, you’re expecting him to eventually play and have a role with your team. But Cedric Benson has looked good in workouts out here. I’m hoping that Cedric will get back to form and we see that guy that we know he is.”
So, basically, the door is open. The question is whether one of the other running backs will run through it.

Cedric Benson is our starter (C’mon Matt Forte, beat him out.)
Just like
Rex Grossman is our quarterback.

Your logic is really unbelievable. You post something that clearly indicates that the door is NOT open — it’s Benson’s spot, and only if/when someone is able to OPEN the CLOSED door will it be anything other than closed. It’s that way in ALL training camps. There are the established players, and the new kids on the block. Yet your agenda-driven mind says: “Well, Benson was arrested. The door should now be open”. So your final parting shot says, erroneously, the door is open. Why? Not because it is, but because Mike thinks it should be.

I feel bad for Cedric Benson as an NFLer. For starters, he was a tandem back because jones and the o-line were playing great. Then jones leaves and the O-Line looks old. I’m not commenting on how likable or talented he is or is not. The Bears took him in the top 5, and he hasn’t panned out. Yes he’s a bust, but an influx of youth and talent in the O-Line would help him, as would a receiving threat or a QB to take the pressure of the aging line. I’m not saying none of this is Benson’s fault, but I feel like if he were on a different team he would be more productive.

Benson is another Curtis Enis, and the Bears know it. They wouldn’t have taken Matt Forte if they had confidence in him. Forte will be the starter in week 1
P.S. I can’t wait to see if anyone says ” But I thought that Adrian Peterson was a Viking!”

Wake up - your dreaming again. I am sure he has “looked good” during workouts the last 3 years, too. Where is the production?

Relax Bears fans, Lovie and Angelo are ardent followers of the things-will-work-themselves-out approach. They’re just saying the right things now in case Mr. Forte has the misfortune of sploding a rather important (aren’t they all?) bone, tendon and/or ligament.
Lovie has a proven track record of starting rookies very early in the season, even the first game, if they’ve earned it. To me, it’s simply up to Forte to prove that he’s learned enough of the protection schemes that he won’t be a liability out there. Thankfully, that’s exactly where Matt says his focus is.

Man, get me a job with the Bears!
I’d never lose it… I can suck on the field like Grossman and Benson, and embarrass my employer off of it like Benson and still be a “starter”. Oh, I could also talk trash about my employer like Briggs and still get a huge fat raise and then ditch my car on the tollway (because I’m well over the legal limit) with no repercussions. I thought being a member of the “Skulls” had perqs.
Honestly, can I get job like that, please!

what is it with this coach and ridiculous decision making. Rex is our quarterback, benson is our running back, Mike Brown is going to be healthy. They must live on another planet. Rex is to short and too wild to play any better then he has. Benson is as clear a bust at running back as there has ever been. Brown is hurt more than 10 games almost every year. How do the bears respond to these issues? They sit tight at QB, believing that threatning the bench to a career back-up will make him perform at a higher level. They draft a running back, instead of QB, hoping to make up for the bust that is Benson. Benson goes on to get arrested, after being a total pompious ass in every public situation, and they still stand behind him as the starter (to the public). Come on! Its time for Rex and Benson to go the way of Tank Johnson.

I was pissed when the drafted him, and I’ve had the unfortunate satisfaction of being right. CedBen is nothing more than a serviceable backup at the NFL level. Kudos to anyone who said Lovie is just playing politics, and the best RB will start. Thorns to the twit who ACTUALLY thinks it’s Benson’s job to lose. He lost it, like, a year ago.

Remember, when “Cedric the No-ground-gainer” cried when he was selected by the Bears?
Bears fans should’ve been the ones crying.

“that guy we know he is”…more proof that Lovie knows nothing about offensive football. Yep, get him back to that 3 yard per carry guy everybody loves.

Benson is a bust. He may not be on the roster if he does not take a pay cut.
