Reporter John Tomase of the Boston Herald has posted a lengthy, detailed explanation of the events leading to that fateful February 2 story claiming that the Patriots had taped the Rams’ walk-through practice prior to Super Bowl XXXVI.
The entire article is right here.
Though we’re trying to give Tomase the benefit of the doubt on this one (something he didn’t give to the Patriots at the time he wrote the story), Tomase’s version of the events comes off as a second-by-second description of a train wreck. In the end, the train still wrecked; all that his story adds to it is the first-hand account of the screeching brakes and the flying glass.
And the engineer with his cranium buried in his caboose.
We can’t help but think that this is all part of a broader, and carefully calculated, P.R. effort aimed at ensuring that Tomase keeps his beat, and that various editors at the Herald keep their jobs.
After all, Tomase’s sharing of details provides a human context to the story of the story, and we think that someone in upper management at the Herald concluded that this would be a prudent way to generate sympathy for Tomase, in the hopes that everyone can move forward as if this never happened.
But we don’t think that can happen. There are too many flaws in the explanation. For example, the original apology implies that Tomase had multiple sources for the story, but Tomase now concedes that the article cited only one source, but then tries to explain that there were in fact more than one: “The story mentioned only a single, unnamed source because in the end,” Tomase writes, “while I had multiple sources relating similar allegations, I relied on one more than the others.”
Other intriguing aspects of Tomase’s explanation include an acknowledgement that the league’s investigation of the situation revealed that there was no power to the cameras. Also, Tomase claims that, when he asked Commissioner Roger Goodell about the rumors of the videotaped walk-through following the “State of the League” address on February 1, Goodell said that it was the first he’d heard of it. After the Herald story was published, Goodell explained that the league previously had investigated the matter and had concluded that the practice had not been videotaped.
Though Tomase refuses to disclose his source or to claim that his source lied to him, the circumstantial evidence continues to point to Walsh.
Think of it this way. We know for a fact that, at one point, Walsh was squawking like a parrot on speed, on an off-the-record basis. So why didn’t Tomase simply ask Walsh for a comment, on or off the record, as to whether the walk-through had been taped? If Walsh would have said to Tomase on an off-the-record basis what Walsh told Goodell face-to-face three days ago, Tomase would have had everything he needed to pull the plug on the story.
In other words, if Walsh’s recent claim that he didn’t tape the walk-through was enough to get the Herald to retract the story, shouldn’t a similar statement from Walsh have been enough to kill it?
This leads to only three possible explanations, as we see it: (1) Tomase didn’t bother to try to contact Walsh before running the story; (2) Tomase contacted Walsh, and Walsh refused to talk about it at all (which would have made no sense if he merely would have been saying was “I didn’t tape the walk-through”); or (3) Walsh was the source.
We believe, based on everything we’ve read and heard, that Walsh was the source. And, if that’s the case, we’d love to know why Walsh told Tomase one thing in February, and the Commissioner something else in May.
We also can’t help but wonder whether the Pats are eager to “move forward” on this one in part because they don’t want that question to be asked, or to be answered.

I wonder if Matt Walsh really was the source. I’m pretty sure Sal P asserted on Mike and Mike that Walsh was not the source. But I also see Florio’s logic. Interesting.
As for John Tomase’s apology. He said what he had to say. But he has clearly done enough to warrant being suspended or fired. You really have to demand firsthand accounts or see something for yourself to make the accusations that he did. Or merely say, “A source heard from a friend that there was a walk through.” …
This way, the journalist is pretty much covered. Of course, saying something exactly like the aforementioned will not be taken seriously.
I’m curious if the identity of the source is figured out and what happens to Tomase.

“No one forced me to write that story, and it’s important to note I do not believe I was ever lied to. I believe my sources intended to provide accurate information, and it was incumbent on me to vet it more fully.”
I don’t know if Matt Walsh was the key source in this instance just based on this statement. If it was, then from this statement we can gather Walsh never gave him false information or told him explicitly that he taped it….just my two cents.

Reading Tomase’s apology made me cringe. It seemed like a high school student trying to save his job as the school newspaper editor. He would have served himself better if he implied he was lied to. Instead, he made himself sound like a complete fool. Whether you like or dislike the Pats, there is no forgiveness for this type of amateur reporting. I also am very curious why Walsh apparently said one thing in Feb and another thing in May. One possible explanation for an extreme about face is a negotiated ‘payoff’ from the NFL. (I said ‘possible’) Nothing Tomase writes suggests that there is any other explanation for his inaccurate article than his poor reporting skills and discipline.

I don’t know if this points to Matt Walsh being the original source or not - but if he was it seems from this quote here that whoever was the source did not completely verify that there was in fact a taping, as he claims he was never lied to.

Mike:
You close this article with this statement:We also can’t help but wonder whether the Pats are eager to “move forward” on this one in part because they don’t want that question to be asked,or to be answered.
If the question were asked of Walsh, how could we know whether we we get a truthful response? Could it be that Walsh was lying from the get-go? Could it also be that he was discovered by the NY media, who may have embellished the story they got from Walsh? Could it be that Walsh is nothing more than a media stooge? Could it be that Arlen Specter put Walsh up to this? After all, who was it that got Walsh his high-priced DC lawyer?
Walsh is an admitted thief and now, a proven liar. Not only has he back-tracked from his story about taping the Rams’ walk-through, but he apparently has lied about watching the Rams’ walk-through from the sidelines, and talking to then Patriots’ assistant coach, Brian Daboll. Even ex-Rams coach Mike Martz disputes the Walsh tale.
Why is Walsh, a disgruntled ex-Patriots’ employee, being given an ounce of credibility?

Mike:
Why did Walsh tell Tomase one thing in February, and then tell the Commissioner soething else? To even consider this question, one must assume that Tomase is telling the truth. Could it be that Tomase is lying to cover himself? Could it be that Mr. Wonderful, Matt Walsh, has been making things up all along?
Could it be that Walsh was discovered by the NY media…who ran a check on ex-Patriots’ employees, hoping to find one with an axe to grind? Could it be that Walsh is nothing more than a stooge for the media, and/or Arlen Specter? After all, who set Walsh up with his high-priced DC lawyer?
Why is anybody affording Walsh an ounce of credibility? Hes’ a disgruntled ex-Patriots’ employee, a thief (he has admitted to stealing the tapes which he handed over to Roger Goodell, along with tons of Patriots’ memorabelia), and now, a liar. How do we know hes’ a liar? Because his story allegedly went from taping the Rams’ SB 36 walk-through, to just being on the sidelines in Patriots’ garb, observing it…and then telling what he observed to then Patriots’ assistant coach, Brian Daboll. Yet, both Daboll (who, incidently, is now an assistant with the Jets), and ex-Rams coach Mike Martz dispute this latest Walsh tale.
The truth of the matter appears to be that a the NY media and frustrated Philadelphia Eagles fan, Arlen Specter, concocted a scheme to distract Bill Belichick and the Patriots, on the eve of their SB battle with the NY Giants. If anything should be investigated, it should be the actions of the NY press and Specter.
Why not ask these questions: Who found Walsh? How was he found? When was he found? What did he report to those who found him? Who set him up with his high-priced DC attorney? Why was the Walsh story broken (as if we don’t know) on the eve of the SB?

Oh, I don’t know. Maybe because he produced tapes of the Cheatriots videotaping (among other games) the AFC Championship game against Pittsburgh.
He PROVED that the cheating wasn’t an isolated couple of incidents, but an extensive, 8+ year pattern of illegal behavior that has CLEARLY tarnished not only their three fraudulent Lombardi trophies, but also the NFL itself.
The only reason this scandal isn’t even bigger is that more matt Walsh’s won’t step forward. I commend him.

Tomase’s source bailed on him, and left him with his fly open. He isn’t going to rake his source out and call him/her a liar publicly, cuz that makes a bad situation even worse. He can write his apology, take responsibility for the mistakes made, and keep his job. In the end, he’s the one holding the burden of truthful responsibility, not the source.
Let’s keep in mind, Goodell was the one who destroyed a bunch of tapes in the beginning of this whole fiasco, I’m not entirely certain he or the league has anything to gain by dragging this thing out any longer. I wouldn’t be at all surprised to hear there was a lot of this stuff going on, and Goodell just said let’s save whatever face we have left, drop a “I didn’t see nuthin’” in regards to the walk-through, hang Tomase out to dry and be done with all of it.

John Tomase had NO sources. Never did! John Tomase heard rumors from other media and printed them a day before the Super Bowl. Hoe professional! Tomase should be fired for breaking every rule of journalism but he won’t be. ANY observer of the national media knows there are few professional standards and even less integrity found within that industry.
Yet they sit in judgement of others?? HILARIOUS!!
Former NFL QB Scott Zolak says John Tomase is “dead man walking” in the Patriots room. Tomase says he’s staying on the Patriots beat. Good! Tomase has no idea just how miserable his life will be.

The reason is because Walsh has been financially “taken care of” by the league and because of that he has either “lost” the tape of the walk through or he handed it over to Goodell and it is now ashes.
Either way, I cant believe there isnt more of an uproar over the tape of an AFC Championship game. And who knows how many playoff games or Super Bowl matchups were in the tapes that Goodell burned eariler this year.
I think it’s time to put an * by the Cheatriot SB victories.

An Open Letter to John Tomase: John, I guess I’m willing to accept your apology.
While we’re apologizing I’ve got something I should get off my chest too. You know that guy who works in the donut shop you visit every morning before work? Yeah, that’s me.
You know that large coffee and Boston Creme Donut you’ve order just about every morning since early February? We’ll, I don’t want to get into the details but let’s just say I’m feeling a little bit remorseful as of today.
So I’m willing to accept your “my bad” and think we can just call it even.

As I always suspected all along. Tomase’s original article read like he was rumor mongering and guess what that was exactly what it was. I never thought Tomase had anything more than the rumor that had been passed along for months and that is all he had.
It is disgusting that a journalist would rely on a rumor he heard from multiple sources as his only evidence for such a large story as this. I think this exposes one of the biggest crime of this whole Spygate incident. The media have been exposed as for their lack of journalistic integrity.
Kudos to Mike Florio for calling out a lot of these guys.

you know, i have an idea. let’s forget all about the shenanigans and tomfoolery an entire nlf organization has conducted over the last 10 years and give them a free pass. but as far as this one reporter printing one bogus story in 25 plus years of journalism, then publicly apologizing for it AND explaining his error, well, let’s destroy him and condemn him to the depths of hell for all eternity. and i’ve never heard from kraft, bellicheat, nor anyone else in the patriots organization owning up to the fact they cheat, much less apologize for it.
oh, and i agree let’s suspend, or better yet, fire this reporter and we can just allow bellicheat to keep on devising new ways to cheat.

Ummm . . . the Patriots already admitted to that. If there’s anyone you want to blame, it should be Goodell, for having the communication skills of a two-by-four.
In any case, the NFL has said that stealing signals is legal, so basically all you’re saying is, in effect, that aggravated jaywalking should carry the death penalty.
In any case, it’s worth noting that Walsh NEVER went on the record as saying he had taped the walkthrough. It’s not clear that he ever even implied it off the record, either.
On the other hand, you also have to explain this: if Walsh believed that what he was doing was wrong, why on earth did he hang on to those tapes, anyways?

If you read the explanation, he says his sources told him that they heard there was a tape. He says they said there was a video guy setting up equipment during the walkthrough. He says they said Matt Walsh was the guy at the walkthrough. He then says that he made the logical leap to Matt Walsh taped the walkthrough, but he was so certain in his mind that this leap was a fact that he ran the story on SuperBowl Sunday, never bothering to wait for a tape, or to say that there might not be one.
I don’t believe Walsh was his source, but that his source told him Walsh was at the walkthrough. I believe his sources told him the truth, that they had heard rumors about a tape and that Walsh had been at the runthrough (both of which are true things: there were rumors and Walsh was there). He just decided to make all the leaps for himself without, you know, actually getting someone to tell them that is what happened.
The guy failed Journalism 101 in a big way and deserves to be fired. I’ll never trust anything his “sources” claim again.

Remove the fan element from the equation and view Tomase as strictly an employee of a business (which he is), and it’s staggering that he’s managed to keep his job. Mistakes happen, but an error of that magnitude is unfathomable, particularly when the business of your company is credibility. I can’t imagine keeping my job after making such an equivalently egregious error (though I suppose the same might be said for Belichick, and what his actions cost the Patriots organization).
