A headline in today’s New York Daily News reads, “Michael Strahan: $8M or goodbye.”
However, in typical New York Daily News fashion, the headline is designed to attract readers, not to accurately reflect the substance of the story underneath it.
The story, by Ralph Vacchiano, says that if the Giants offered to pay Strahan $8 million this season and make him one of the highest-paid defensive ends in football, Strahan would almost certainly accept it and decide to play another season, rather than retire.
But Vacchiano’s story also makes clear that Strahan hasn’t issued an ultimatum, and it quotes Strahan’s agent, Tony Agnone, as saying there have been no discussions about the exact amount of money Strahan will get if he plays for the Giants this season.
Vacchiano quotes one unnamed source as saying that Strahan has been told the team is willing to pay him as much as $6 million to play the 2008 season. That would be $2 million more than his contract calls for, and it would likely be enough to make him decide to stay.
Ultimately, there’s not much new to report, as Strahan still hasn’t decided whether he wants to keep playing or retire. And he hasn’t told the Giants that they have to give him $8 million or he’ll say goodbye.
UPDATE: This item originally said the article appeared in the New York Post. Apologies for suggesting that the Post would run headlines designed to attract readers, not accurately reflect the words below.

Although I usually can’t stand the thought of frivolous lawsuits, I think that in this situation Strahan should sue the pants off the newspaper. It’s the only way this type of crap stops happening.

Strahan would be a fool to turn down 6 million for this year.

Let’s see…what’s worse…a newspaper printing a slightly misleading headline, or a the “captain” of the New York Giant’s defense once again playing the “pay me” game. Please, did anybody really believe him last year? He’s thinking about retiring…what a joke. If by “retiring” you mean holding your team hostage in an effort to extort more money out of them because you signed one of the, if not THE, dumbest pre-nub in the history of marriage, OK.

Strahan can still obviously play. Plus, with a group of young and talented defensive linemen, who he can teach, around him, the Giants should be willing to pay him a bit extra for one more year.

Strahan is at the end of his line, is great on TV, has won a Super Bowl. In this particular instance I can’t really blame him for wanting a big pay day in return for sticking around for another season. I think it all really depends on how badly the Giants want him for another year or two.

Considering at least half goes straight to his gold digging ex-wife, the price almost sounds reasonable.

His gold enriched ex-wife would indeed like a little bit more than half, Sir! After all that she sacrificed soooo much in her life on behalf of the only man she ever truly loved and she most certainly provided incalculable wifely comforts and didn’t she enrich and blessed Strahan’s life with wonderful loving children…? Therefore, this humble caring woman is surely worth anything and everything that her lawyers can extract from this guy… Surely you agree? ‘Don’t call me Shirley!’

All the speculation that he wanted more cash last year was crap. He just didn’t acknowledge the specualtion from the press that he wanted more money, which only lead to more speculation. Strahan himself said last year that it wasn’t about money. He said that the NFL has been very good to him, and that he was financially set for life. This is my team, and I was watching the situation very closely. Look it up for yourself. All the hype about more money was just that.

Also with a little research I found that in 99 he signed a 4 year contract worth about $10 mil/year. And in 02 he signed another contract for 6 years worth $46 mil. I would say that he has been well compensated throughout his career.

“Apologies for suggesting that the Post would run headlines designed to attract readers, not accurately reflect the words below.”
An apology, for one of the few unimpeachable truths in the entire post (no pun intended)? That statement is true of most tabloids, the NYP included, and many other papers as well. It’s a business; revenues increase with impulse sales (the most profitable at margin), stoked by eye-catching headlines.
So did you get a quick retraction demand, or is your lawyer-noia showing through?

An apology to the N.Y.POST? Don’t get me wrong about the Post. I actually really like their headlines. But, the Post must be the closest of all mainstream newspapers to national enquirer type tabloids. Everyone knows their headlines are what sells the paper and it’s fun to go to the news stand in the morning just to see what headline they put on last nights “BIG NEWS” and what photo they BIG photo they splashed on the front page to go with the BIG NEWS! Great headlines….great photos. Why the apology….that’s their calling card.
