During the off-season, Don Banks of SI.com was among several people to pass along a rumor that Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell weighed in the 300-pound range.
Shortly after that, a league source told PFT that Russell was actually under 275. And now that’s what Russell says as well.
“Right now, I’m 269,” Russell said yesterday. “I was never, ever even close to 300 pounds.”
In fact, Raiders coach Lane Kiffin says Russell has been among the team’s hardest workers this off-season and that his teammates have noticed “his body being different.”
Still, 269 is on the heavy side for Russell, even though he’s 6-foot-6 and has a naturally thick frame. At last year’s scouting combine he weighed 265 and looked chubby. And he’s officially listed at 255.
Russell did acknowledge, “I still have some more weight to lose, probably five, six more pounds, but I’m OK.”

Who cares. They drafted him big. Just like when the Lions drafted Mike Williams and tried to make him lose 15lbs. You can’t fit a square peg into a round hole.

Yes, there is a big difference between 269 lbs and 275… and for Russell that difference is what he ate for breakfast that morning..no breakfast=269, breakfast=275 big freaking deal (sarcasm).
I just lost nearly 10 lbs in 2 days due to a stomach bug. if Russell knew he was weighing in, he probably dehydrated himself for a day or 2 as well as cut down on the amount of garbage he usually eats. I still contend that Russell will have eaten himself out of the league in 5 seasons.

Actually, I think it was only Don Banks that reported, and everyone else referenced him or SI.com. And Don himself referenced no one but “unnamed sources”, and even said that no one had actually seen Russell.

The bigger question is can a very suspect O line protect a 270 lb QB and open holes for McFadden with defences playing 8 in the box?

RedbullnRaiders — you hit the nail on the head! I’m not worried about his weight. Did anyone ask Duante Culpepper how much he weighed back in 2003 or 2004 when he was an MVP caliber QB? NO !!! Has anyone even seen Jamarcus this year? How about we wait until he plays a preseason game, then judge his weight. He needs to have some padding to protect himself from incoming defenders while Gallery figures out how to actually block (not hold) NFL d-linemen this year.

They drafted him at 265 and he is 269 in training #1 of the year. That’s 4 pounds more than his playing weight. So what?
Most NFL players are like that when the trainig camp starts, thats the reason for having a training camp. I am OK with him being at 265, that’s his natural weight.
Cutler is 240, and he is only 6′3”
Garrard is 245, and he is 6′1”
Both are similar to Russell, 6′6” 265

If he is weighing 270 at 22 or 23 years old, how much is he going to weigh when he is 30? The vast majority of us gain weight as we age and unless he suddenly becomes a fitness nut he is going to do the same thing.

Bottom line… Get Jamarcus out of Louisiana BBQ pits, Posse’s, Hip Hop clubs, and into camp ahead of schedule… This guy needs to get ready and learn the playbook, practice his timing routes and get some serious work done in the weight room. For the kind of money he’s being paid he should also be bodyguard to Al Davis. Protect that checkbook Jamarcus.
