Drew Mormino, a guard whom the Dolphins’ coaching staff had indicated was talented enough to compete for a starting job this year, was waived by the Dolphins today after he failed a physical.

The Dolphins took Mormino, a versatile lineman who can also play center, in the sixth round last year, and early in training camp he looked so impressive that he was taking reps with the first-team offense. But he suffered a torn labrum and spent the entire season on injured reserve.

As recently as last month, Dolphins coach Tony Sparano said Mormino had a shot at being a starter, but the Dolphins’ medical staff apparently deemed the shoulder injury too serious to play with.

As Jeff Darlington of the Miami Herald notes, the Dolphins’ offensive line is shaping up to be a young one: With Mormino out, rookie fourth-round pick Shawn Murphy appears likely to be the starting right guard, rookie first overall pick Jake Long is expected to start at left tackle, and second-year player Samson Satele is the incumbent starter at center. A pair of fifth-year players,  left guard Justin Smiley and right tackle Vernon Carey, will round out the starting lineup.
