The New York Times received on Thursday yet another reward for a stream of fluff and puff regarding former Pats video employee Matt Walsh and his lawyer, Michael Levy.
The Times got the first print Q&A with Walsh.
Here are a few highlights. (The last one is the most important, in our view.)
Walsh justified his participation in the cheating scam because he apparently feared termination. Or the loss of his job. “I wasn’t going to question what they wanted me to do,” he said. “They became upset if we filmed a practice drill incorrectly. I didn’t want to imagine what the consequences would be if I refused to do something altogether.”
Also, it’s becoming increasingly clear that the Pats didn’t use the tapes of the defensive coaching signals in the same game. “There was no rush after I finished to get it to him right away. Because typically we wouldn’t be playing the team for months to weeks later on.
“At first, it was filming teams we were going to be playing again later that year. In 2001, it evolved to filming other teams, especially in the [AFC], that we thought we might either possibly see in the playoffs or see again another time. It was the kind of situation that being the third video guy, there wasn’t anything else I necessarily needed to shoot, especially for home games. So it was said, ‘Go ahead and shoot the signals.’”
Walsh says that, on at least one occasion, he noticed that an opposing team might be doing the same thing that the Pats were doing. “[T]here was one time that I was filming and another team had set up their third video guy right next to me in our stadium,” Walsh said. “And when our team was on defense, I looked over at him, and he was angling his camera toward our sideline. I didn’t ask him about it, because I was doing the same thing he was. But after the game, I went and told [former defensive coordinator] Romeo Crennel, and there were a couple other defensive coaches standing around in his office at the time. I’m not sure who overheard it or not. But I told Romeo, ‘The next time we play this team, you may want to change your signals, because I think they’re doing to us what we do to them.’”

So….Patriots fans say Matt Walsh is lying when he says Bellicheat…errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr…..Beeeeeelichick…errrrrr….the Pats coach was directing him to cheat….but he’s definitely telling the truth when he says he saw some other video person taping signals? Typical myopian Patriots fans (again).
Actually….the REVERSE is true…..it’s the Patriots haters like YOU who now say Walsh is a liar because his stories aren’t what YOU want to hear. Personally…I think the guy is a bullshit artists through and through. He has an overinflated sense of self worth and thinks he is more important than he ever is or was. He embellishes everything to make himself seem like a key player…when all he was was a camera guy……he wasn’t in team meetings….he didnt have one on one talks with the coaches or coordinators. He simply did his camera work and went home (while pocketing lots of stolen memorabilia). He is not now, nor ever was a credible person. So, while I believe wholeheartedly that every team in the NFL has videotaped signals….I do not put any stock in anything Matt walsh says….even if it backs my opinion.

Wake up people. The rules get broken every single game, that’s why the refs carry flags. Sometimes they break the rules on purpose and get away with it. There are no good guys in this whole mess, not the Patsies, not Walsh, not Mangini, not Goodell, not Tomase, not Specter NOT A SINGLE ONE. Time for the slow lingering death to finally be over and get back to football.

Did he confirm other teams cheat or say he “thinks” this other team was doing the same thing? Just curious.

“Joesixpack,
Interestiing idea. I think the converse is also true: that Pats fans who have called Walsh a liar will now selectvely believe this story.
Good point about the other fans, though. I think you’re right.”
Pats fans called Walsh a liar because the Herald published a story implying WALSH as the source for having those walkthrough tapes. He obviously taped defensive signals before… that’s not the dispute. Spygate was over with until the day before the Superbowl and Walsh was the source. Now that he has immunity and has gone on the record saying he did not tape the walkthrough, the Pat haters are trying to find a spin to keep their small hopes alive that the Patriots will have more punishment.
On the other hand, his statement about other teams cheating is just an observation. It doesn’t matter how he phrases it to whoever he told it to the bottom line is clear: it is possible that other teams cheat. Moreover, I believe the tapes the Patriots turned over to the league had evidence of other teams doing this and that’s why they were destroyed. Think about it: Belichick told the truth about how long they were doing this. He was punished. Why destroy the “evidence?” I’ll tell you: because the NFL didn’t want to discredit the entire league and have public perception of NFL stars doing charity work be tainted by what corporate America is overflowing with today: whatever it takes to gain a small advantage.
Frankly, I love how something as little as taping defensive signals is getting all this attention and when the Broncos were well over the salary cap when they won their two superbowls everyone seems to turn a blind eye. Whatever advantage is gained by taping signals, it’s nowhere close to paying top talent what they want so you can beat on other teams who play by the salary cap rule. After all, it does exist so that teams can’t put together Pro bowl type packages against teams that don’t have as much money. That’s what makes the NFL different from MLB and that’s why people watch on any given Sunday.

Hey, who’s this Matt Walsh guy? It sounds like he videotaped something or someone or maybe he didn’t? I hate these vague topics that you never hear anything about.

The title should read, “WALSH TALKS TO THE TIMES, CONFIRMS THAT MAYBE ONE OTHER TEAM MIGHT HAVE CHEATED THE SAME WAY THE PATRIOTS WERE CHEATING.”
Spin it Florio, spin it!!LOL!

@bondem777 - I wouldn’t totally ignore this allegation that other teams may cheat just because it didn’t come from a fully reliable source. However, he’s been nothing but reliable since he’s met with Goodell. Obviously, Mangini was able to point a cameraman out during the game who he thought was cheating. So why couldn’t the guy who’s doing the illegal deed be able to do the same thing? As much as you apparently don’t like Fail Cat’s comment, he’s dead on. This is an occasion where Pandora’s box might have been opened, I wonder how many more discruntled employees are out there.

I think the QB who talked to Walsh was Drew Bledsoe.
That said, I got a feeling the other team that was taping was either the Jets when Al Groh was the head coach, or the Jaguars when Tom Coughlin was the coach.
I’ll have to double check the timelines, but I got a feeling its one of those teams.

Well let’s see, Walsh is a proven psychopathic liar as established by Pats apologists, but now we’re supposed to believe him about this.
Let’s quote an article in the NY Times last week, last Sunday’s sports section:
“The NFL team executive said the Patriots were the subject of most of the accusations discussed in the rules committee’s deliberations.
‘They were the only team, really,” the executive said.”
Clear enough?

Isn’t it funny that people want to Walsh on his word when he says things that can damage the Patriots, but when he points to other teams cheating people want to discredit what he says.
————————————
Think you have that backwards. Pats fans want to discredit Walsh as a thief and liar when it comes to Spygage, but want us to take his word when it comes to this.

bushy responded to my post: “Wow. So Matt Walsh saw one person who he believed might be doing the same thing and that is confirmation that other teams (plural) cheat?”
by saying:
I think the statements of Jimmy Johnson, Dick Vermeil, Mike Ditka and a whole host of others that this is commonplace adds a little weight to the statement. Wouldn’t you say, Matt? Or has Denial crested its banks and flooded your basement?
——————————————————
None of those people you mention were included in this story. The headline to this post says that Walsh “confirms that other teams cheat”. There is absolutely no way you can draw that conclusion from what Walsh said or from what Mike Florio posted.
Now if this was a post including all the sources you list and titled “NFL sources confirm other teams cheat” that would be a different matter that could be evaluated on its own merits. But as it stands, Florio’s headline is sensationalistic and misleading..

Sorry, this comment really has no bearing on the article, other than to make fun of Walsh’s grammar… I am glad to hear that they might be playing the same team “months to weeks later.” Likewise, I look forward to hearing the latest development in this story days to minutes from now.

Matt Walsh is an attention whore. Next he’s going to say he’s got tapes of signals of some kind from Pamela Anderson or Paris Hilton. Matt please stick to video taping Hawaiian tourists’ golf swings.

The Times interview is the first public description of the Patriots method of cheating. I had been curious to the mechanics of taking the information and creating a usable advantage. To proclaim every other team does it is disingenuous at best. I don’t think other coaches could. Maybe the Patriots were more efficient and more intelligent than the average pro football coaching staff. The ability to decipher, analyze and respond to defensive signals in seconds is beyond the capabilities of most staffs. I can’t imagine Bill Cowher having enough imagination or intelligence to pull something like that off.
