The New York Times received on Thursday yet another reward for a stream of fluff and puff regarding former Pats video employee Matt Walsh and his lawyer, Michael Levy.
The Times got the first print Q&A with Walsh.
Here are a few highlights. (The last one is the most important, in our view.)
Walsh justified his participation in the cheating scam because he apparently feared termination. Or the loss of his job. “I wasn’t going to question what they wanted me to do,” he said. “They became upset if we filmed a practice drill incorrectly. I didn’t want to imagine what the consequences would be if I refused to do something altogether.”
Also, it’s becoming increasingly clear that the Pats didn’t use the tapes of the defensive coaching signals in the same game. “There was no rush after I finished to get it to him right away. Because typically we wouldn’t be playing the team for months to weeks later on.
“At first, it was filming teams we were going to be playing again later that year. In 2001, it evolved to filming other teams, especially in the [AFC], that we thought we might either possibly see in the playoffs or see again another time. It was the kind of situation that being the third video guy, there wasn’t anything else I necessarily needed to shoot, especially for home games. So it was said, ‘Go ahead and shoot the signals.’”
Walsh says that, on at least one occasion, he noticed that an opposing team might be doing the same thing that the Pats were doing. “[T]here was one time that I was filming and another team had set up their third video guy right next to me in our stadium,” Walsh said. “And when our team was on defense, I looked over at him, and he was angling his camera toward our sideline. I didn’t ask him about it, because I was doing the same thing he was. But after the game, I went and told [former defensive coordinator] Romeo Crennel, and there were a couple other defensive coaches standing around in his office at the time. I’m not sure who overheard it or not. But I told Romeo, ‘The next time we play this team, you may want to change your signals, because I think they’re doing to us what we do to them.’”

Well! I am shocked to hear that other teams may have been taping defensive signals! Simply SHOCKED!!
Obviously, it wasn’t the Lions. Their videographer hasn’t figured out that he needs to take the lens cap off first.

Notice he said 3rd video guy. Video is simply a part of the game. It sounds like the signals were NOT the most important part.
– Also can we get a better “witness” than Walsh. He hasn’t worked for any team in years and does not sound like the most trustworthy person.

Now let’s sit back and watch as all the fans who declared Walsh a credible source who were in denial about other teams cheating, say that he’s full of Sh*t.
Of course, they were also in denial when Jimmy Johnson admitted he did the same thing as the Patriots and that other teams did it as well
And they were also in denial when the Lee Groscup article re-surfaced from 1967 detailing cheating going back to 1955.

I say let it all come out - let Specter uncover all the cheating in the league so everyone knows its been an even playing field all along.

Your headline is misleading: You said Walsh confirms other teams cheat. I wouldn’t call that a confirmation but an opinion based on seeing one guy one time.

OOOOOOOO…The spooky man calls out another team that CHEATS! OOOOO…It better not be a haters fravorite team. Because I’ve read soooo many times in these posts about how “MINE TEAM WOULD NEVER CHEAT” comments. Or would you then say “Walsh is full of crap!” Think about it. You have time to chose what side of the fence to stand on. WALSH GO HOME!!!!!

that is pretty much why I don’t care about this at all…there is no way that they are the only team in the NFL that cheated in the past decade. In this way, in some other way.

As much as I feel this thing is getting ridiculous,
I would want to know if the Steelers were doing the
same thing. The truth hurts but atleast I would know.
I would also like the league to start their own video dept.
And only allow teams to use league sanctioned videos when preparing their game plans.

Interesting that in the interview the NEW YORK Times didn’t ask (or asked but didn’t publish) the name of the other team because it sounds exactly like the incident Walsh described to Specter the other day that involved the NEW YORK Jets.

Of course other teams taped signals from the sidelines. It wasn’t like Belichick woke up his first day of work as head coach of the Patriots and said “Hey, it would be a great idea to videotape opposing teams signals, I don’t know why no one has ever thought of that.”
I am not saying that to excuse or deflect what Belichick and Patriots did, but point out to haters that it is a long fall from your high horses. If Specter ever gets his way and there is a Mitchell type investigation, you may not like what is reported about your team.
There is too much pressure for head coaches and GMs to win quickly or update their resume for there not to be a lot more cheating going on by other teams than we currently know. When a head coach is fighting to keep his multimillion a year job, do you really think he is going to sacrifice that to keep the letter of the law? Especially when you gotta have a win at all cost attitude to make it to head coach in the NFL.

umm….no

“Wow. So Matt Walsh saw one person who he believed might be doing the same thing and that is confirmation that other teams (plural) cheat?”
I think the statements of Jimmy Johnson, Dick Vermeil, Mike Ditka and a whole host of others that this is commonplace adds a little weight to the statement. Wouldn’t you say, Matt? Or has Denial crested its banks and flooded your basement?

Since Matt Walsh has indicated that at least one other team has done this, and since hr told this to Crennel, should not the league now investigate that team and confiscate all their tapes to look for wrongdoing? Shouldn’t they at least ask what team it was and interview Crennel?
Should not that team suffer the same fate as the Pats?
Or no, should we just let every one else get away with it? There should have been a broader investigation from the beginning! After all, several people (including Johnson) went on record stating that this was a widely held practice. But no, focus it all on the Pats.
If somehow there IS an independent investigation, and the teams were not smart enough to destroy all their tapes last year, then we could see a VERY small first round draft next year.

Joesixpack,
Interestiing idea. I think the converse is also true: that Pats fans who have called Walsh a liar will now selectvely believe this story.
Good point about the other fans, though. I think you’re right.

Matt Walsh originally told Specter that he didn’t tell anyone about the taping by an opponent. Now he says he told Crennel. Which is the truth?
‘The next time we play this team, you may want to change your signals, because I think they’re doing to us what we do to them.’
I guess Matt Walsh didn’t think anyone else was cheating like the Pats,so he felt like he had to warn Crennel. So why do people think Walsh says other teams cheat. He suspected one team, and he isn’t even sure of that.

So now we get the spin from the other fanbases that Walsh is only giving an opinion… So now that other teams other than the Patriots are involved it’s speculation, but 2 weeks ago when he supposedly had the Patriots over a barrell, everything that this liar said was gospel. So now he’s not “confirming” anything, it’s just an “opinion.”

So other teams cheat? So what! Spygate isn’t about the Patriots cheating. It’s about the media obsession to destroy Bill Belichick because he has never/ will never suck their media lollipop.
Any other team but the Patriots get caught videotaping in the 2nd week of the NFL season and the story is over within a couple of weeks. This isn’t about cheating in the NFL. Never has been! This is about media vendetta and agenda. They don’t care if other teams cheat and you’ll see no attempt by the media to expose it.
Doesn’t for their agenda.
It’s all about the media’s agenda against Bill Belichick and has been from day one. Don’t take my word for it. Just watch as NOBODY in the media atempts to expose the dirty deeds of other teams.

It took 6 months for Matt Walsh and his lawyers to get the NFL to give him “amnesty” from prosecution/being sued. Now with that kind of protection, what’s to stop him from saying anything he wants, irregardless whether it’s the truth or not? ESPN will put it on the air without researching it at all. This guy’s credibility just went out the window.

So….Patriots fans say Matt Walsh is lying when he says Bellicheat…errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr…..Beeeeeelichick…errrrrr….the Pats coach was directing him to cheat….but he’s definitely telling the truth when he says he saw some other video person taping signals? Typical myopian Patriots fans (again).
