Two of Cedric Benson’s fellow UT alums weighed in with their thoughts about Benson’s arrest while boating on Lake Travis in Texas.
Ricky Williams told the Austin American-Statesman that he was invited to go along with Benson on the ill-fated voyage. He regrets passing up on the trip because “I find I have a calming influence on people I’m around.”
I think Ricky may be guilty of using some transitive reasoning about what calms people when he’s around but at least he’s not condemning Benson before his day in court. That task is left to Earl Campbell.
He told the same newspaper that Benson made a “dumb mistake” on the day in question. “I think at some point you have to stand up and take responsibility and realize that you not only represent Cedric Benson and the Chicago Bears and your family. It’s bigger than that,”Campbell added.
We’ve been down this road with Benson before. His general manager Jerry Angelo accused him of putting himself in a position to be a victim as did Jay Mariotti of the Chicago Sun-Times. There are at least two sides to the story, though, and none of his detractors are any more enlightened to what actually went down than we are. If Benson’s telling the truth, he took no less responsibility for his actions than any of the rest of us.

I personally don’t believe Benson. As far as the people on the boat backing up his story, well what do you expect them to say? Maybe its true that cops can at times target athletes and celebrities, but most of us would not recognize Cedric Benson if he walked past us on the street. He is entitled to his day in court, but all I can say is he better hope he is telling the truth otherwise he is going to look much worse.

Williams has observed that he mellows-out everyone around him?
In college we called that a contact high.

Ricky Williams has a calming appeal on folks. Yeah, as long as he doesn’t bogart the blunt.

Yep, that would have capped it off. Ricky Williams in the boat? Talk about an automatic “GUILTY.”
However, the fact that Ricky turned down the invite assures me of one thing: there was no sticky-icky involved in this arrest, that is to be sure.

Having Ricky comment on this situation is like having Pacman weigh in on Chris Henry’s latest incident. I’d love to hear that.

So why does Cedric Benson get the “innocent until proven guilty” pass from this site, but Chris Henry’s recent altercation is meet with “once a turd, always a turd”? Henry and Benson both previously had issues with the law and both are claiming innocence in their latest brush. Is this once again a case of Bengals bias by all members of the media? (Even as much as PFT tries to act like they aren’t part of the “real media”)
I just find it very ironic how Marvin Harrison and Cedric Benson and others on this year’s turd watch list get passes even when there is a smoking gun (sorry, Harrison) and yet if it’s a Bengal, there’s no doubt of guilt.
I used to live and die by this website, but it’s recent negative slant on all things Bengals (even two years after the large number of arrests we had) is really turning me off.

If Ricky Williams was on that boat, the whole situation would be worse. You know what he would have had brought on board! He has a “calming influence on people” he’s around because of the ‘cloud’ that follows him…like pigpen in Peanuts

Yeah, everyone should just lay off the Bengals. I mean, it’s not like there’s any current controversy going on there. No players making waves. Everything’s peachy right?

Typical Mariotti hatchet job on a Chicagoland professional athlete. Rank this one right up there with his columns on his BFF Ozzie Guillen. How this doosh still has a job in major print publication simply escapes me.
And we all know why Ricky has a calming influence on the people around him, heh. The only thing Benson was guilty of was BWB (boating while black). I’m going to go way out on a limb here and suggest that the boatcops didn’t much care for the fact that there was a boat with a bunch of black guys and white women in bikinis.

How could Benson done anything wrong, his mother was on the boat with him. I’m sure that bottle of vodka was litter that someone else had thrown into the lake and they had just picked up to dispose of properly.

Law-abiding citizens who are minding their own business don’t get pepper-sprayed by the police but it’s easy to blame “The Man” when you have a history of doing so. To those who are quick to believe Benson, Austin is almost as left-wing as San Francisco. This isn’t some 60’s small town in the deep south we’re talking about where the police harass the minorities for the heck of it.

If you believe the cops in Austin don’t hassle minorities for the heck of it, just check their latest racial profiling reports. They are required by law to file one every March. The city of Austin may be left wing, but the cops are good ol’ boys. However, this was LCRA cops. I do wonder if they have to file a report. That would make interesting reading.

Poor Benson is being picked on again. First it was PMWB (possession of marijuana while black), CTWB (criminal trespass while black) and now BWB (boating while black). The only thing this all leads to is PSWS ( pepper-sprayed while stupid).

All of you simpletons who copy each others lame jokes sound more ridiculous than any stoners i know, including myself. I would put my morals, and brain power, against yours ANY DAY OF THE WEEK and smoke yer asses like a doob.
So just shut your mouth, morons. When you’re as stupid as you obviously portray yourself to be, the best you can do is be silent and keep your ignorance “unknown” to others.
Most of you are probably future alcoholics waiting to happen which is the REALLY funny part about you being “stoner throwers” IMO. I’d rather hang around stoners than drunks, to be quite honest about it.
