The Houston Texans opted not to extend a restricted free agency tender to receiver/kick returner Jerome Mathis, a speedster who never came close to reaching his potential during three seasons with the team.
To complicate matters, Mathis was arrested for allegedly assaulting his pregnant girlfriend in February 2008.
So the Texans allowed him to become an unrestricted free agent, and the Redskins eventually signed him.
But the ‘Skins apparently have seen enough. With a couple of rookie receivers in the fold (Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly), Mathis was cut on Thursday to make room for rookie defensive lineman Jonathan Mapu.
Mathis technically will enter waivers, since he has less than three years in the league. But since no one else wanted him when he was an unrestricted free agent, we can’t imagine anyone else wanting him now.

The ’skins have enough average wide receivers as it is; I guess there was no real point in keeping another one around.

“Mathis was arrested for allegedly assaulting his pregnant girlfriend in February 2008.” Character like that practically endears itself to another Texas team.

If I am his agent I am calling the Bungles right now…
He’ll get picked up somewhere. There are always teams that need KR specialists who can play WR if need be.
St. Louis, Oakland, Minny come to mind…

He is a good KR and a decent guy from what I hear. The Skins just did not have the roster spot, but someone will. He can play and he has not been found guilty of anything yet.
why do you insist on bashing guys on unproven charges?
Is that not worse than what the Herald did? Who said he was guilty or even that kind of a guy in the past?

Google Rick Smith (Texans GM) and Jerome Mathis and you will find this quote:
“We’re very disappointed that we’re dealing with another issue involving Jerome. We’re still gathering information. We believe in giving players second chances, but repeat offenders won’t be tolerated. We’ve been patient and supportive, but at some point, it becomes increasingly difficult to do so.”
Notice it says ANOTHER. The thing with his preggo g/f is just one in a long line of knucklehead related items the Texans had to deal with (motorcycle wrecks, fights on team bus, letting his pitt bulls run loose in the neighborhood, missing an appointment during Pro Bowl week because he overslept… and those are the things that were made public). That and his inability to stay healthy makes him an easy waive.

Another moron who had an opportunity and threw it away with both hands as fast as he could.

A lot of WRs on the roster, somebody had to go. Too bad, I was hoping he could take punt returns away from Randel El.
