Once per day, yours truly does a Google news search of “profootballtalk” to see whether any members of the “real” media are calling us bad names. (Roughly three times per week, the answer is “yes.”)
Over the past couple of days we’ve seen in different formats an article from Tony Moss of The Sports Network, in which he lists a few things that the NFL should change.
Though we’re not big on ideas conjured by folks other than, you know, us, we really like Moss’s offering for the improvement of the Pro Bowl experience.
Moss thinks that the league should “form a Pro Bowl selection committee of no more than five people who cover the league nationally but have no discernable agenda, including but not limited to Peter King (Sports Illustrated), John Clayton or Len Pasquarelli (ESPN), Mike Florio (profootballtalk.com, The Sporting News), Adam Schefter (NFL Network) and someone from FOX or CBS or NBC who knows what they’re doing, to make the picks.”
Tony, I don’t know you, but I already love you. Not that way. (Not that there would be anything wrong with it if I did. Except for the fact that I’m married.)
Anyway, we like the idea on the surface, especially since it would give yours truly a seat at the grown-ups’ table. Then again, it would actually require me to expend effort, so maybe it’s not such a good idea, after all.

If PeeTurd King had a choice the whole patriot roster would go to the Probowl. That guy is the most east coast bias fat ass out there.

This is a horrible idea. Especially when you consider the list of people given as the selection committee. Peter King & Len Pasquerelli in particular have repeatedly shown themselves to be totally clueless about such things. The fact that those two have a say in the Hall of Fame selections is already enough of a travesty. The last thing we need to do is give them power over something else as well. Just take a look at how badly the HOF selection committee has embarrassed itself in recent years with idiotic selections like Art Monk, Micheal Irvin, and Fred Dean while leaving out obviously more deserving candidates like Cris Carter and Richard Dent.

There’s a deeply weird dissonance between your attempts to seem “professional” and the fact that you do public backflips anytime anyone mentions you anywhere on the internet.

Can anyone, ANYONE at all tell me why Peter King gets credit for knowing anything about football?? The guy is a hack. Ok he can write an article, Bravo! Knowing about football though is another story. I could pay for my whole university education by placing all my money on the opposite of what ever “10 things Peter King thinks he thinks”. He is NEVER RIGHT ABOUT ANYTHING! Besides if Favre doesnt return this year I think he might kill himself with a starbucks americano overload.
As far as pasta-belly goes, no and no. I actually believe that agents write stories for him, and he puts his name on it in return for a pack of twinkies.
Florio I can see but I would be worried that you would overlook the easy picks because you seem to be on a never ending quest to be “different” than the “real media”. Its a good thing most of the time, but in this case it could be a negative.
Dr Z from sports illustrated would probably be the best guy for this job.

Yes, yes, this would be good for “right-sizing” the likes of Peter King and Dr. Z … but there is ANOTHER idea in that article that REALLY makes sense to me and I still have not heard any compelling reason not to do it, specifically, a professional officiating corps like the rest of major league sports. Is it wrong to pay referrees annual salaries for only 4-5 preseason weekends, 17 regular season weekends, and the post season? No more wrong than the amount of annual salary players get for playing in those same games. Also, it would reduce some of the variability in the three factors that ultimately determine who wins on any given Sunday (or Monday night): injuries, officiating, and the coin toss.

Not to take anything away from you Florio, but I read the part about “no discernible agenda” and then I saw the name Len Pasquarelli, so I don’t think this guy has a clue. Or maybe he hasn’t come here enough to see all the times you’ve slammed Len for getting spoon-fed information from agents and then writing articles that basically attempt to serve as a low-key advertisement for the agent and/or the agent’s clients.

There’s nothing wrong with a little bit of oversight for the process and leaving slots open for selecting players who truly deserve to make the Pro Bowl who might not have as much name recognition as others. Of course, Florio should run the oversight committee.
But.
In general, I disagree. The NFL has a darned good system for selecting Pro Bowlers, combining the fan, coaches, and players’ votes. Coaches know who can play, and so do players. It’s only fair to include fans, who collectively count as one-third. The system works (though the game doesn’t).
If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

Adam Schefter is a “NO” due to his ties to the Denver Broncos and Mike Shanahan. Florio and Clayton are the 2 most suited for such a committee; at least Clayton attempts to be objective.

That would entail that John Clayton both knows what he’s talking about and he’s got no discernible agenda. I disagree with the first part because indeed he has no clue whatsoever on what he’s talking about. Sean Salisbury used to call him on that all the time until he made that stupid comment on the crypt-keeper thing that cost him his job. I disagree with the second assumption too because he’s so partisan in favor of the Seahwaks. He’s got his nose so up to Holmgren’s behind, it’s not even funny…and that comes from a Seahawks fan like me!
Mike, keep the good work, you do deserve to be in that committee
