there's a guy in new york that works for wfan-am,his name is chris carlin.i think he would be a great play by play man for the network.he's done college play by play, and pregame shows the ny giants.
the reason i think he's better than a lot of other candidates is that he's the couch potatoes everyman.he's overweight, bald and possesses a good sense of humor, you can verify his wit, just ask boomer esaison.
i know it's a stretch, but the guy would be droll and witty.

Why would Al Michael's want to leave the nationally televised Sunday Night broadcast for the NFLN. The NFLN only shows about 8 games and can't be seen be many cable subscribers.

Good. I get enough of Al on NBC. Technically, he may be good - but he comes off as a little smug, and he sometimes seems to have this gleam in his eye when players are struggling. (Schadenfreude is a lot more entertaining on blogs and fan messageboards.)

Count me as not disappointed. Michaels is OK imo, but not great, and his command of the English language leaves something to be desired.

I think Bob Papa of Sirius NFL radio, and WFAN (He's currently the play by play voice of the Giants) would be a great choice. I'm not much a Giants fan, but if you've ever heard Papa call a Giants game you know he's outstanding.

They might want to, you know, hire someone who has actually done play by play football before. Hammond is the voice of Notre Dame and the NFL can get a guy who won't be treating it as second fiddle to ND. Albert would be a good choice. So would Patrick or Harlan.

I'd vote Brent Musberger, but would ESPN/ABC let him out of the Saturday night college gig he has?

How friggin' sweet was it when Musberger was the host of the NFL Today on CBS and that music would come on and you'd hear "You're looking live at [insert stadium name here] where the [insert team] is visiting [insert team] in a tilt of NFC foes". It'd send chills up the spine.

Since where I live I get Time Warner shoved down my throat, I could give a rats a$$ who they pick, I won't see the broadcast anyway. So with that out of the way, bring back Joey Sunshine.

"My top 5 (no particular order)

Dierdorf
Schlereth
Boomer
Aikman
Collinsworth"

No offense, but NONE of those guys are qualified. The position that is open is for the play-by-play man, not a color commentator. Play-by-play guys usually aren't former athletes or coaches, but are instead veteran TV guys that take the lead and know how to keep a broadcast going.

"I would love to see Boomer be on the broadcast. I’ve always thought he was one of the very best.

My understanding is that he got the shaft on the Monday Night Football gig because Al Micheals was worried/intimidated because Boomer was so good and didn’t want him around. "

Not even close to accurate. Boomer is a good TV personality now, but he was offered the MNF gig while he was still considering coming back for another year of football. He took it, making it his first TV job.

And you could tell.

I always liked him, but on MNF, he was irritating. He contradicted himself a few times, and sometimes would start talking without knowing where he was going with his dialog.

know who was really good color commentating? vermeil. the old coaches make the best color commentators because they posess the best all-around knowledge of the game and can teach the viewer something without intending to do so. also, he has so much enthusiasm for watching people excell. you need more of those types in sports broadcasting. "controversy is king" (i.e. the idiotic and antiquated mantra that espn employs) is not what people want to see. people like a guy showing them something. that's how you get into it.

the espn idiots are so far behind that they're too dumb to understand that the whole notion of the sportsbar debate is not at all desirable.

look at the talking heads of so many of their programming:

skip bayless vs woody (or now anyone) the mantra being to argue
   steven a smith. enough said.
rush limbaugh, because you knew he'd start crap
michael irvin, because you knew he'd start crap
keyshawn, because you knew he'd start crap
hodge vs jaworski, the whole mantra is for them to argue
clayton vs salisbury. the whole mantra is for them to argue
kiper vs mcshay, the whole mantra is for them to argue
kornheiser vs jaworski, the whole mantra etc...

   get the picture?
   they don't.
it's not a coincidence people generally don't like espn. the only
     reason they are what they are is that they have no competition;
     not quality

moral of the story? no wonder michaels turned them down. he feels
no need to argue with madden, or anyone, thinking that's a quality
   broadcast.

Maybe they can hire Arlen Spector to do the commentary. That might get him off their backs.

How would that have worked, anyway? Isn't he already with NBC?

Please, no Mike Patrick. Brad Nessler would be pretty good, though.

/doesn't even have NFLN

I would love to see Boomer be on the broadcast. I've always thought he was one of the very best.

My understanding is that he got the shaft on the Monday Night Football gig because Al Micheals was worried/intimidated because Boomer was so good and didn't want him around.

They should hire Mark Schlereth and Cris Carter to broadcast. If they need a three-man crew, they can always call up Trey Wingo, too.
