Colts receiver Marvin Harrison has told his team that he was not involved in a shooting that occurred with a gun that he owns.

And a year ago Falcons quarterback Mike Vick told his team that he was not involved in dog fighting that occurred on property that he owns.

And a decade ago Bill Clinton told us all that he did not have sexual relations with that woman.

So what should we make of Colts owner Jim Irsay’s disclosure to the Indianapolis Star that Harrison has denied involvement in the shooting, which occurred two weeks ago in Philadelphia?  Does anyone expect that Harrison would say anything other than “I didn’t do it”?

Reading between the lines, Irsay seems to realize that Harrison’s self-serving version of the events is essentially meaningless.  “At this point I’m keeping my fingers crossed,” Irsay said.  “We’ve done everything we could do in our diligence to try to discern what happened.  He said he was not involved in that shooting and . . . the authorities have said there is nothing imminent.

“You hope these things hold up to be true, that there won’t be any charges and there wasn’t any involvement.  Until we hear more, this isn’t even a case of innocent until proven guilty because there hasn’t been a charge yet.”

The Colts gather for a mandatory minicamp on Friday, but Harrison might not attend, due to ongoing rehab of not one but two bad knees.

And because the intensely reclusive Harrison would face a flurry of questions about the Philadelphia incident.
