Every team that picked a receiver in the 2008 draft is hoping to find the next Marvin Harrison.
But not in this way.
Rookie receiver James Hardy, a second-round draft pick of the Buffalo Bills, allegedly pulled a gun on his father on Sunday.
Hardy’s name has been removed from a police report regarding the incident, but other evidence pointed to Hardy pointing the gun at his father. Fort Wayne, Indiana police chief Rusty York confirmed that Hardy was the guy who allegedly pointed the gun.
But York said that the matter isn’t being pursued, because Hardy’s father wasn’t injured.
Um, guys? Anyone who has a gun pulled and pointed at him or her isn’t injured unless the trigger is pulled. But that doesn’t make it, you know, not a crime for the person to pull and point the gun.
This is another example of the biggest flaw in the league’s Personal Conduct Policy. If a player engages in bad personal conduct in a jurisdiction that isn’t inclined to arrest and prosecute him for it, then the player will likely escape scrutiny from Commissioner Roger Goodell. In contrast, if another player does the same thing in a town where the cops decide to push the thing, then the player also will face a greater chance at discipline from the league office.
Of course, the league could still decide to perform its own investigation and mete out discipline. However, we’re not aware of any situations in which the league has investigated a player for violating the Personal Conduct Policy, absent the pursuit of criminal charges.

I agree Mike. The only way to introduce a truly fair system is for the NFL to use its security detail to investigate every player CHARGED and penalize per each. The NFL certainly has the capacity to do so. Even players caught smoking pot should cost there teams at least 7th round picks…

I think it’s also important to remember that Hardy’s father has been locked up for an extensive period of time (over 10 years) and that he has a horrible relationship w/ his father. It’s not out of the realm of possibility that Hardy’s father initiated the conflict and that Hardy was acting in self-defense. I just think it’s wrong to jump to conclusions about this matter (or any other one) until all of the facts are out. Please remember that several pro athletes aren’t from the types of family backgrounds that most reporters or agents are blessed with and that when you mix in the fortune and fame…it could lead to explosive situations.

If it walks like a duck and talks like a duck…
Who pulls a gun on their old man? You shouldn’t pull a gun on anyone unless it’s a life threatning situation and I’m willing to bet that his dad wasn’t trying to kill him. I don’t know for certian, but lets be honest. However, NFL should investigate to some extent, I would be concerned if I was Buffalo. If he is willing to pull a gun out on his own dad then what the hell is he going to do if one of his teammates get bitter at him in the locker room.

Ah, spoken like a true ignoramus. People like you amaze me with your stupidity.
You actually would rather have all of the guns in our society in the possession of it’s two two most corrupt elements… criminals and cops.

Fascist Florio strikes again. What is it with you and trying to control every aspect of player’s lives? The cops didn’t pursue it but you think the NFL should, and you assume the guy is guilty until proven innocent. Quit the holier than thou attitude, it doesn’t suit you any more than it suits anyone else.

“I just think it’s wrong to jump to conclusions about this matter (or any other one) until all of the facts are out.”
Couldn’t agree more. Look at the Harrison case which you mention in jest… that really developed to.. um.. nothing.
What was it again, Mike? A custom Belgian .50 cal pistol? No, no.. that’s right you corrected yourself. It is was a FiveseveN from which all Marvin’s armor piercing bullets were fired and recovered.
But then this statement comes up in New York papers:
“The officer also said that Harrison’s gun, if armed with a certain type of bullet, can pierce a Kevlar bulletproof vest often worn by law enforcement officers, but he made it clear that the bullets confiscated were not of the body armor-piercing type.”
Not that you are contributing to sloppy journalism.. or even journalism at all, that is.
Fact is you and your anonymous sources don’t know anything more than a fan with Google and a National Enquirer subscription know, so stop acting like some amazing beat reporter drawing your own conclusions.

Hardy pulled a gun on his father. Do we know why he did it. If Hardy was arrested for domestic battery, which is something that is usually a learned trait (thanks sociology of the family!), how do we know that the argument they were having didn’t stem from something that his father was saying or doing to his mother, and, hence, he pulled the gun. While the man is his biological father, if they did not have a relationship growing up, then they basically are like strangers. I’m just speculating like Florio.
