Our friend Mike Felger of the Boston Herald and ESPN Radio in Boston, with whom we’ve appeared numerous times, was interviewed by phone on ESPN earlier this afternoon.
The exchange between Trey Wingo and Felger was tense at times.
Said Wingo at the outset, “Now let us bring in the man who represents the paper that’s sort of been behind the onus of all of this [Editor’s note: Was that Trey Wingo talking, or Emmitt Smith?], and that is Mike Felger, a columnist for the Boston Herald . . . . Mike, we heard the Commissioner basically say that Matt Walsh denied the existence of a videotape of the Rams’ walk-through before Super Bowl XXXVI at his news conference. Your story, your paper of course, not your story, your paper reported that in a February 2 edition that a source told you that there was indeed a videotape of that walk-through. What’s your reaction to what the Commissioner had to say?”
Replied Felger: “Well, first of all, you say I ’represent’ the Herald. I don’t. You asked me to come on and give my thoughts, and I’ll give them to you. But I don’t represent the paper, and if you want those sort of questions, you’re gonna have to call my editor or my boss.”
Wingo talked over the last part of Felger’s response, clarifying that he’s not saying (even though he did say) that Felger “represents” the paper.
But Wingo wouldn’t let it go. Moments later, Wingo said this, “I guess you don’t feel comfortable speaking for the paper, but does the Boston Herald stand behind that story of February 2?”
Said Felger, “You just said I’m not there to speak for the paper. Are you gonna speak, Trey, for every ESPN story that’s aired over the last year? I don’t think I’d put you in that position, and I’m not here to do that today, either.”
Felger also pointed out the most ignored fact in all of this — that other teams cheat, too, and that the Patriots have evidence of it.
Finally, Felger said that there have been rumors “for years” that Matt Walsh has told people he taped the Rams’ walk-through. So either those rumors were bogus, or he told people that and was lying, or it’s true.
Based on today, the likely reality is that the rumors were bogus, or that Walsh was lying.

I am from Boston and I typically don’t like felger, but what he did today on ESPN was great. He basically called them out for being idiots, specifically mentioning Schlereth and Carter.
Those two goons and Trey Wingo didn’t do themselves any favors today. They came across as class A bozos.

Albeit slim, is there any chance the Patriots gave Walsh some incentives to cover this thing up?

If that tape is sitting in the Commish’s hands I bet he would have felt plenty comfortable representing the paper…I do like the fact that he gave the verbal b@tch slap to Wingo…he’s a douchebag.

All Hail Mike Felger…..he laid an @$$ whooping on Trey Wingo. Granted, the Herald’s story was wrong….and Walsh WAS the source..despite hsi claims …..but it was great to see someone stand up to ESPN…especially a no talent hack like Trey Wingo !!

Ever since Mike Felger came on and said Randy Moss was a dog on national tv I have never given him any respect because simply put, the guy just obviuosly doesn’t have a clue! If Randy is a dog, then what is the average Wide Reciever………an insect?

“They came across as class A bozos.”
That was easy for them because they are class A bozos. They care less about the truth and the facts than the Herald or NYT.

The “new” ESPN…….LOL…………….they ambush Miguel Tejada…..they allow DOLTS like Shannon and Sterling Sharpe to spew biased venom every week…….and they try to ambush a Herald writer. But as usual……the BOSTON guy wins…and turns the tables on the idiot from ESPN.

The bottom line is that the Pat*s went above and beyond what the rest of the teams do for game-planning recon, which was breaking the rules. Carter and Schlereth stated the simple question of why do that if it doesn’t help them in any way, which is a perfectly valid question that hasn’t been really answered. Even the slightest advantage makes a big difference in the NFL, or any pro sport for that matter…
How many points did the Pat*s win by in their superbowl victories again? >:)

ESPN is a monolith that can’t support its own weight… I still think they feel slighted by the NFL and are using subversive tactics and in the end will just shoot themselves in the foot not once but more than once…

Mike I believe you did a great job in reporting the Mike Vick saga and it seems the same with this saga. PFT, plus its many links, and Sirius NFL radio are where I go for football info (I don’t have satellite so I don’t get NFL network). I used to listen to ESPN (every spin piece necessary) quite often in the past. Oh well we all make mistakes. One more thing……I admit I still watch ESPN because I have cable but I don’t listen.

I think someone was communicating with Wingo as he was trying to conduct the interview. He looked like a puppet. I think he was going to let Felger go when he said “Ok I guess you don’t feel comfortable…” and then someone made him do the 180 and ask “but does the Boston Herald stand behind the story?” If I was Felger I would have slam dunked Wingo right there and said “so now you’re asking me if an inanimate object has made the decision to stand behind the story?”

I don’t think I have ever been so disgusted with coverage of a non-sporting event like I was today. Schlereth and carter, who from now on should be called the Drama Queens, basicallt spent an hour overreacting to everything before the presser with Goodel, then afterwards skirted every single thing he said that contradicted with their own believes, -ie- tapes not in used in the same game and such. Those two, Wingo and SalPal were just blatantly slanted, biased and awful, and at one point basically just rode John Clayton off the air for saying what every other normal individual sai today, that this was really a whole bunch of nothing. What a waste of time. Congratulations Arlen, you proved that you can cause companies to have waste money on crap, just like our government

“Your story, your paper of course, not your story”
Yikes. Probably not one of the best lines to jumble given that you’re basically trying to get a writer to take blanket responsibility of an entire news source.

Who cares about the “walk through”?
The Commish is spinning your head again. What took so long to have this meeting? How did they announce the result of the Walsh tapes before looking at them?
What about the fact that the Pats have been “mis interpreting” the rules since 2000?
How does anyone know that Walsh’s tapes ,including taping o coordinators, matches the evidence the NFL has already destroyed?
How could anyone not in the NFL front office confirm that this is not new information?
The story is over as long as it remains, NE has been cheating since 2000, and how much can never be proven because the Commish destroyed the evidence.
