Mikey you great big hero. Finally two people in the media step up and call ESPN out for very poor reporting. Bostonian's have know this for a long time. ESPN is another rag tag gossip entertainment show. It's kinda like MTV without the videos...cheap, do nothings and complelty inept sports reporters. Mike you hit the nail on the head with ESPN. Thank you for telling the truth, especially the truth about Schlereth. Did you know the Broncos got fined for $978,000 and lost a third round draft pick for circumventing the cap and while Schlereth was on the team at that time.
Schlereth also lubed himself down before a playoff game so he could be slicky slick...just like he is now.
I wonder if Schlereth still promotes those oh so perfect family videos he creates and posts on the web. H e shows himself as a great family man....a family man who had surrendederd his self worth to cheat, not only one but twice.
I guess when it comes to good ol Markie what's good for the goose is NOT so good for the gander.
Schlereth grow up and take ownership for your past cheating ways. There is only one definition for a cheater and that is to deceive, trick and break rules...just like you and you Broncos did.Do us a favor and take that gargantuan head and pull it out of your arse.
if you can dish it. you better take it.
Stop squealing about the Patriots and their fans. If you keep it up we will be on you like flies on sh*t. and ESPN will be boycotted in the Boston area. We will be asking our local cable compny to black out ESPN for a period of time.
You shoud learn from the NFL network. Truth always prevails.

Tom Brady is a less the average quaterback. The Pats offensive is what make Tom Brady great.

Seeing this comes from a saints fan, it doesnt really bother me at all.

@FunnyPatsFans: your so fricken cute honey. You make me want to take a big crap so I can look you in the face right before I flush you.

the fact that denverdumbass compares this to global warming while claiming global warming isnt real is almost as good as having Eric Cartman on the antiPats bandwagon...You share opinions with eric Cartman Einstein...How many times did you vote for GWBush?...

Your Broncos are cheaters every bit as much as the Pats could ever be, but they won less, because they werent as great.

IF the PAT fans found out that the giants did something illegal to the patriots, how do you think the pat fans will feel. Beside the Giants showed the patriots and tom brady for what they are. If you hit him in the mouth, Tom Brady is a less the average quaterback. The Pats offensive is what make Tom Brady great.

Pats players are so cute. Tommy, after all the butt-kissing and pretty-boy worship ESPN has laid on you, now you bite the hand that hypes you? But good to see you're out of hiding holed up in Paris or wherever you've been since the loss, and back to doing what you love best: getting your sweet face in the media again. We sure did miss ya!

The Pats were punished for breaking rules. The posts that say they were "crucified" are overblown. $250K? To an NFL team, that's chump change. And hell, my Eagles give up a first round pick every year lately, and they aren't cheaters.

Folorio is so biased its funny. I have yet to see one nice thing said about the Broncos since I began reading PFT last year. Sure he will post news if its good but not say much about it, but if the news is something bad he will go on and on.

I feel PFT has more bias than all the ESPN analysts combined, times 2.

I am sure this will get lost in all the comments. But ESPN is trying anything to top the NFL network with thier NFL coverage. They have some sort of agenda going there that I can't quite put my finger on. They used several seegments of the 6pm sports centers to talk about the new power ranking. What the F___ is that all about? Power rankings about about as useful as boobs on a nun. Plus they are based on 5 guys who really don't know what the heck they are talking about.

"So, ESPN, we rescind our request that you fire Emmitt. But we beg you to fire Schlereth. Now."

How about a "two-for-one?" Schlereth is better than this.

The one thing that I keep coming back to in all of this , is that every team does want it can to get ahead - legal or illegal. I can't see Billy the Hobbit being the only coach to ever videotape his opponents. In the grand course and scheme of things, tampering with potential free agents is far more damaging that taping another team.

Its laughable to me how Pro-Patriot this blog has become. I keep wondering why and then I figured it out . . .

The NFL is the golden goose. No-one wants it killed. This whole website is devoted to the NFL. ESPN might be the one outlet willing to actually look at Spygate head on because with other sports including NBA, MLB, Nascar, Hockey, etc they make money no matter what. And with the NFL Network not being a major player yet, the NFL almost needs ESPN more than ESPN needs the NFL.

In any case, this website and league insiders and Patriot fans are the only groups who are silly enough to keep playing down the significance of spygate.

1) Yes with this system you could make in game adjustment, and if you don't think you could, you're seriously retarded. With half-time available to update your database on what the opposing teams tendencies are and look at the film you collected, it would be easy to make great adjustments

2) The 2 minute drill. You can run a great 2 minute drill if you can steal signals and understand what a defense is doing, especially when that defense can't substitute

3) Throwing hot versus the blitz. If you know where the Blitz comes from, then its easy to throw hot. And if you were stealing defensive signals as systematically as the Patriots were, then it would be that much easier

I could go on and on.

All the major rules changes in the past 7-8 years have basically been responses to some form of cheating on the part of the Patriots. Nuff said. Their dynasty is tainted and will remain so, even if league insiders and the NFL brass keep screaming it doesn't in order to not kill the golden goose.

To all of the people that say the tapes could be usedin game, I say perhaps. But what about:
1. Walsh said he had the tapes of the signals in his possesion throughout the game and didnt turn them over until after the game. This corroborates what the Pats have said all along and Walsh has no motivation to go along with them. Can we just ignore that?

2. Technically it would be a challenge. You have to take multiple video sources (the plays from different angles and the signal tapes), synch them together, edit and produce a final tape. All of that is done at half time? With video editors int he locker room? Then the video guys go out and continue recording during the second half?
Tough but perhaps possible?

3. After halftime, Adams gets the first half tape, watches it, analyzes the plays and the calls using video review equipment in the booth?, deciphers the signals and plays, and somehow watches the game at the same time to relate all of that info to what is actually happening on the field before a play takes place. Sounds tough even for a computer.

Is it technically possible to edit the tapes? difficult but maybe possible. More likely chance of introducing editing errors that would make a mess of the interpretation process and usefulness. Is it feasible to do all that and extract useful information during the game? I highly doubt it. Thats most likely why the Pats didn't use it during the game.

Sometimes a fish is just a fish.

Thats most likely why the Pats didn’t use it during the game.

Sometimes a fish is just a fish.

ESPN, like the cable companies, shower us with a ton of fluff and offer a very limited amount of good programing. Frank Zappa said it best..."you're mind is in their control, and has been stuffed into their mold...and you will do... as you are told...until the rights to you are sold"!

And don't think for a second that Florio doesn't shove his face into the ESPN trough when it's time for a nibble.

On top of Denvers salary cap issue, Schlereth has admitted on numerous NFL live segments to preemptively telling the referees before many games that he was going to keep his hands inside the DLs shoulders, but that he would be consistently undressing the DL while doing so, and warning the ref"If you call me for holding when I do that, you are taking food out of my childrens mouths." He also admitts to peeing his pants during the games on a consistent basis, and if you look at the fat head hes sporting in 1997 compared to the slimmed down, vacuous, abomination we now see daily, you gotta wonder about his possible steroid use. Schlereth shouldnt throw stones.

Everything Schlereth said is true. Like it or not. As soon as his comments came out, the pathetic Pat fans had to attack Denver. It has nothing to do with Denver or any other team. The fact is the Pats Cheated and their methods are now questionable in everything they do. It doesn't matter what Denver did in 97, or the Dolphins did in 69 or the Canton Bulldogs did in 1928. Nothing else has any bearing on what Belichek has done for 7 years. NOTHING. They cheated and Pat fans are pissed. Too bad, its done and we now know how it was done. The Pats will NEVER get past this and it still doesnt matter what any other team ever did. It does'nt make their crime any more justified. Deal with it and go on. Many losers have critisized me for stating less harsh words, because of my sign-on name. I found it a joke that they started to attack Denver, like that will make the Patriots actions less serious. I don't care what team did what and when. The problem is Belicheck and the biggest Prima Dona in Football. I'm really ticked, but the NFL will cover for these guys because it would open lawsuits like nothing we've ever seen before. We all new that Walsh wouldn't have a walkthrough tape, or at least one that the League would admit to. They aren't stupid. A big stinkin coverup. The Pats are dirtier than what anybody is willing to admit: Taping Defensive signals, Taping Offensive signals, Taping playoff games that would only help during the game, Jamming opponents QB headsets so the opponent can't call in a play, Messing with radio frequencies of Coaches to Coordinators in the Box. The NFL Ethics committee said that half the complaints every year are from many teams against the Patriots. If it walks like a duck and it quacks like duck, it's probably a duck. Get real New England. Instead of Calling for Mark Schlereth to be fired because he told the facts as true, everybody should be outraged that Belichek still has a whistle and calling for his head.

I was sitting in my living room last night with the curtains open. I was watching the NFL Channel and finally decided to go to bed. I turned off the tv and a sound outside the window caught my attention. What the H...? I thought is was a peeping tom or something. It was definately somebody with a video camera. I rushed to the door and sure enough some A....ole was running across the street with a camera. At first I thought about chasing the guy and giving him a pounding, but my thoughts relaxed. I could see him from the streetlights and realized it was ok. He was a New England Patriot.
Pats fans are pathetic and I don't give a care what you think of me, I could care less. The Patriots are the biggest hoax of the century, right next to Global Warming. Bellicheck should be banned from the NFL and Brady should never be in the HOF. Posers, all of them.

They have more than just halftime to look over the tape. Say their defense is on the field
towards the end of the half. The videotape guy can wrap up and get the tape to Ernie Adams before before the end of the half and with the halftime break can get enough time to examine it all especially if the other team has the ball starting the third quarter. Who says Ernie Adams doesn't have a direct feed into Belichick's headset during the game?

Ok..Heres my response to the comments I have read.
1. The Pats Cheated, they know they cheated, knew they were cheating at the time and obviously cheated to gain a competieve advantage.
2. They still had to execute on the field and I really doubt any of those super bowls wouldnt have happened if they didnt videotape opposing signals.
3. Yeah, the broncos cheated too. It wasnt as blantant and it had even less of an affect on the field than the Patriots cheating.
4. To all the people who defend the patriots by putting out other teams on the field "cheating" like Denver's cut blocking, you'd be hard pressed to find a worse violation of the rules than Rodney Harrison taking HGH and Vince Wilfork trying to gauge out Brandon Jacob's eye, which was easily the dirtiest play ive seen in years.

He probably laughed out loud..reminds me of the Austin Powers Comedy when Mini-Me was humping the "LASER" as Dr. Evil was threatening world leaders with a Nuclear Bomb. "Stop Humping the Laser Mini-Me!" As the presidents of nations busted out laughing...THAT WAS EPIC!

Again, I don't think enough people are calling out Schlereth for putting KY jelly or some other lubricant all over his uniform as well as the rest of the Denver linemen in that January 1998 game vs. Kansas City. That was direct cheating in a playoff game.

hopefully we can at least expect espn to publicly swing off of Brady's nuts less than before because of this.

maybe they will actually ask the question of why he could throw a ball 55 yards when he came into the league and now he can throw it 80, as well. and how that meshes with his relationship with victor conte.

I think this is a ludicrous column, Florio.

You have questioned the Pats, on average, with more skepticism than ESPN which has a boner for the Pats.

I have no idea why you now are convinced that the video couldn't be used in the game just because of what Matt Walsh said he knows today (or thinks he knows, haha, now he has become credible in your eyes?).

You may want to call for Adam Schefter's firing as well, as I heard him say on NFL Total Access today that Spygate will follow the Pats and taint them like steroids taint Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa.

But you won't have the gall to call for Schefter's firing for such a minor offense, and I would bet a large sum of money on that. It would be a stupid thing to do, just like your attack on Schlereth.

These films could absolutely be used in the second half, and I'm not saying they were, but they could be if anybody half-competent wanted to try. You have presented zero evidence to the contrary other than what Walsh said (or you think he said).

The fact remains that the Patriots blatantly violated a rule that was clarified to every team after the Patriots were caught blatantly violating that rule in Green Bay the year before. And they lost a first round draft pick and huge fines in the process. Today in no way vindicates them for that, even if you and Joe Six Pack want it to.

Rob0769 - The Broncos were penalized for deferring payments of several players salaries to future years. There is nothing wrong with that per se, and the interest is not counted as part of the cap as you allege. The problem is that when a team defers money to players they have to report it to the NFL and they have to put a portion into a deferred compensation fund.

The first penalty occurred when the league decided in November 2000 that the $29 million Denver had deferred to Elway and TD was too much. So Denver paid 75% to the players, paid about 300K into the deferred compensation fund as well as about $650K in owed interest (hence the almost $1 million penalty).

The second violation is a bit more tricky to get the details of, but it appears that in looking into the Elway and TD deferrals, the league found Denver hiding other deferred payments between 1996 and 1998 and not putting away the proper money. There was also a player who was promised not to be cut until after a certain date. This was the only charge that actually affected the salary cap numbers of any player, the Broncos counted the roster bonus entirely in 1997 instead of prorating it over the life of the contract since it was guaranteed (by the Broncos verbal commitment). But there is no way to know if the change was material to the Broncos cap number without knowing the player or the amount of the bonus. Similarly, there is no way to know how much of the "fine" was money that should have been placed into the deferred compensation fund, how much was interest owed, and how much was an actual punishment.

I don't know that cheating the salary cap is the right way to put it. I think that the league's statement which said "Both types of agreements raised salary cap accounting issues" is more accurate. Every indication is that Denver cooked the books so that they had extra cash available to pay for the new stadium, not so that they would circumvent the dollar value of the salary cap. If anyone has other info that shows I am wrong, I would love to see it.

If Matt Walsh is the morally corrupt liar he's being made out to be, isn't it highly plausible that he would accept a handsome bribe from Goodell, whose main interests in this affair lie with protecting the overall stability and success of the NFL product? The last thing the NFL needs is an NBA-style ref-betting scandal. If you didn't notice, Goodell's whole reign has been focused on creating a clean image for the league. Money can't hide a Pacman Jones or Michael Vick investigation, but it could potentially, and successfully, encourage someone who in the past was employed for the purpose of cheating to keep his mouth shut.

Did they use the video during the games??...probably not...
Here is what Don Banks says...
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

-- Walsh telling Goodell the tapes he turned over to the league were never used for competitive advantages during the game they were shot should close that open-ended debate once and for all. Walsh knew the drill and executed it, but he also knew it did not provide an in-game benefit.

The Patriots cheated and shot video of AFC opponents they reasonably believed they'd face again in the near future. That means they quite possibly cheated in order to better prepare for the teams they beat in the AFC playoffs on their way to three Super Bowl wins, but it does not mean they cheated in any of the Super Bowls themselves. As far as we know, they beat the Rams, Panthers and Eagles in those games fairly and squarely, even though that distinction can rightly be questioned in light of their previous actions against potential AFC playoff foes.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Hope that helps.......

To RonInCharlott:

So I see - its the gamesmanship card for the Dolphins? And you're belieiving them without any proof about where the tape came from?

How trusting of you!

No, there's no question that Belichick broke a rule set in 2006 with his sideline taping in 2007.

But seeing as it was being kept as quiet as possible that taping signal calling was and continues to be legal in the NFL, now that this cannot be denied, it makes the violation of a rule saying WHERE taping can be done look like what it is - a violation of a rule that was so questionable in the first place, that the NFL had to clarify it so it wouldn't continue to read as though any taping was appropriate anywhere, just as long as it wasn't for that game day.

All fans are going to look at it anyway they want - but it can't be denied that all teams can legal tape signal calling and therefore likely do.

The Pats were wrong, they owned up to it, they were punished. This fact was established months ago.

@RonInCharlotte: You draw some quick conclusions about Brady being complicit based on loosly coupled facts. Bledsoe did have an agenda afterall and his statements were fairly noncommital. Do you always draw conclusions with such little to go on?
You are certainly entitled to your opinion but the way you tie these conclusions together and then preach the hypothesis in your angry messages is somewhat a kin to a Reverand Wright sermon.
Enjoy the season.

JoeSixPack, you have not only posted facts, and quoted the exact rule, but you have shown remarkable patience in trying to explain it in terms that dolts like Ron and Ralphie could understand/ Alas, your tremendous effort was just not enough to crack thru the cement heads of theirs. Their hatred of the Patriots simply does not allow them to accept that they are 100% wrong, ignorant of the actual rules and that they are now making crap up as they go along because their binky (Matt walsh) had nothing ........but again...I applaud you JoeSixPack !! There ARE signs of intelligent life after all on here !!

so Ron you must have been disgusted by Dungy and Fisher
usher when they colluded to finish a game out by agreeing to not call a timeout when strategy would have dictated that one be used. It must have been completely deplorable to you when Kerry Collins admitted knowing about on a national radio show. The outcome of that game btw, had playoff implications for the Browns. I do believe that you would be posting your disdain about those two coaches and the players that knew. However, that article wasn't written because inexplicably mo investigation happened and no one pursued the story. Why? St. Dungy is off-limits because he is media ballwasher and BB gives them little to work with. All NFL fans deserve consistency from the commish and the media when issues concerning the integrity of the game come up. Btw-it's Mrs. Espnsux.

Regardless of this story, Patriot fans, your team's best chance at 19-0 was last season. As a long-time Dolphins fan, thanks for making our 2007 season worthwhile (even if we had to wait for the very last minute). Thank you NYG!

19-0 is a possibility for 2008, but it's not going to happen. The NE bias continues as you're ranked #1 in the ridiculous ESPN preseason power rankings. You'll easily win the weak AFC East, but good luck even getting to the conference championship.

I don't care about the tapes, it was just fun to hear the Draft-day fans of the other 31 teams give you their love.

I can't wait for Congress to get involved and ask Brady the hard questions. Like how much did knowing what the defense was going to do help you? (Steroids in baseball type questions, under oath)No wait, Congress needs to pay attention to $4.00 a gollon gas prices. The N.F.L. needs to hire a commissoner to ask these questions.

Two reasons I boycott ESPN:
1. Sensationalism
2. "Insider" content. Get it free from more reputable sources.

you people are all crazy. Goodell came out and said today that stealing signals is legal. Its jsut the fact of where the pats taped them. You are allowed to video tape signals as the rule states but it just need to be in an enclosed area and not the field level. All you people drive me nuts not knowing the easiest thing about this. The rule they broke was taping from the field level.

DanFoutsBeard,

I don't think the Patriots use the signals other than to get tendencies anyway. Most teams don't use the same signals from half to half nevermind game to game.

I still can't think of a logical way that anyone during halftime can take the raw feed of the signals that aren't matched up to plays and get something out of it in 10-15 minutes. Beside, Wlash said he retained the tapes the entire time game and only handed them over to Ernie Adams after the game.

The Patriots were wrong and they were punished, end of story.

Funny how the comments still debate the use of the tapes. Walsh's own testimony corroborated what BB and the Pats said all along. Doesnt matter, questions are good.

But this little article is dead on Florio. You hit the nail on the head about Schlereth. He has an agenda and disregards the facts all the time. Sometimes I wonder how we hear him because I'm convinced he is talking out of his ass. That's most of the time too. He has absolutely no credibility and isn't that as bad as it gets in his position?
