In a Tuesday afternoon interview with WEEI in Boston, Pats quarterback Tom Brady addressed the harping of former NFL players in the media about the videotaping of defensive coaching signals.
Asked one the hosts: “Does it surprise you some of the former players who are in the media now who just seem to be clueless about this whole thing? I’m stunned by it.”
Said Brady: “It’s just kind of the environment right now, though. I think that’s the way that guys make it. They just say the craziest things. . . . That’s what ESPN has become.”
We agree with Brady. And we were amazed by the insistence of guys like former Broncos offensive lineman Mark Schlereth that the videotapes created by Matt Walsh were used in the same game. Any moron (even Schlereth) could see that the final product was the result of an editing process that made the thing easier to watch. It would simply be too cumbersome to forward and/or rewind through the raw tape during the three total hours of a game (including a 12-minute halftime) to make any use out of this information in the second half.
Moreover, if the purpose of the taping was only to use it in the same game, why did the taping continue into the second half?
The bottom line? Schlereth is part of the ESPN agenda aimed at making some/any story out of this matter. Since there was no videotaping of the Rams’ walk-through prior to Super Bowl XXXVI, the media needs to talk about something else.
And so Schlereth and others are yammering about the videotaped signals being used for in-game adjustments, and pondering how that diminishes the Pats’ run of success this decade.
Meanwhile, Schlereth hasn’t once mentioned the tarnish on his own pair of Super Bowl rings because the Broncos cheated on the salary cap from 1996 through 1998. Though the cause-and-effect as it relates to the on-field product isn’t as obvious, circumventing the cap in order to avoid having to cut a veteran and replace him with a street free agent results in a higher quality team.
Indeed, let’s consider this quote from Schlereth, which he offered up on ESPN Radio on Tuesday afternoon: “This besmirches to the organization to the point where regardless of how you look at these three championships that they’ve won over the last seven, eight years you will still always look at them and say ‘Yeah, but . . . they had this Spygate thing, how much of it was inappropriate, how much cheating went on, and how much did it help them during the course of some of those games?”
Now, let’s revise it a bit, and apply it to Schlereth’s Broncos: “This besmirches to the organization to the point where regardless of how you look at these [two] championships that they’ve won over the [two] years you will still always look at them and say ‘Yeah, but . . . they had this [salary cap] thing, how much of it was inappropriate, how much cheating went on, and how much did it help them during the course of some of those games?”
Frankly, we think we prefer an intellectually honest guy who can’t talk all that well (i.e., Emmitt Smith) to a former player who looks and sounds good as the horsesh-t is flowing from his mouth.
So, ESPN, we rescind our request that you fire Emmitt. But we beg you to fire Schlereth. Now.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with this comment. The Patriots got caught cheating during the span of their “dynasty” so questions will always surround them. It really is as simple as that.
There will also always be questions surrounding the material turned over to Roger Goodell the first time, and that is HIS fault. Had he been as transparent and honest with NFL fans and media when he received the tapes from the Patriots as he is attempting to do now with the tapes turned over by Matt Walsh, this would not be the story or controversy it is today.

Geez, I don’t know Ron, maybe you should be more clear. They DO let you use VIDEO cameras in the NFL didi you know that?…just not on the sidelines (which the Patriots did). The “NFL Game Operations Manual” states that “no video recording devices of any kind are permitted to be in use in the coaches’ booth, on the field, or in the locker room during the game.” The manual states that “all video shooting locations must be enclosed on all sides with a roof overhead.” So you can do it up in a box off of the field. Commish or not, them’s the facts.

But in addition they may not be used to video defensive signals, if not then why were the patriots penalized? For not doing so under an enclosure? Ridiculous.
But to sit there with a camcorder and use it to steal signals is clearly illegal, whether in a box or a freaking giant plastic lemon.

Ron, might you be a Panthers fan being in Charlotte and all? Shouldn’t you put the rocks down?During their years being supplied by a convicted roid Dr they might’ve earned an * too-if they had actually won anything. Most pats fans know that they broke a rule and were penalized for it. If you haters pay attention, what you will see are not apologists but fans frustrated by what appears to be a witch hunt. There are several examples on rule breaking in the NFL yet only the pats have been so publically crucified. And keep in mind relativity-1 teams taping is another teams illegal cap manuevering. Until a cap issue is punished by Gooddell, you can’t assume it is a lesser offense.

Ralphie, a Cheerleader, says: “Ron in Charlotte, you need to get your facts straight. Absolutely NO VIDEO recordings are allowed.
Teams can use a camera and legally take still photos on each play and the sideline signals that could help in the in-game analysis of formations and alignments. It’s all legal under NFL rules, with that one glaring stipulation: absolutely no video recordings allowed to tape an opponents signals and that’s because the technology allows for a quicker breakdown and a potential unfair advantage. So “train your cameras” all day long at the man sending in the defensive alignment.”
Thanks for helping to prove how ignornant some fans and media are there Ralphie boy!
Unfortunately you’ve misinterpreted what Goodell was saying and clearly have never read the rule yourself. Goodell was making clear that taping from the sideline is not allowed. After the 2006 memo there should have been no question, that under no circumstances is sideline videotaping allowed.
You seem to have stopped reading the actual rule past the “no videotaping allowed” section is referring to specific locations where it is prohibited. The rule goes on to make clear where videotaping IS allowed for any purpose.
“Page 105 of the Game Operations manual says: “No video recording devices of any kind are permitted to be in use in the coaches’ booth, on the field, or in the locker room during the game.”
That’s pretty specific about where videotaping is NOT allowed. So where IS videotaping of signals allowed? That’s where you failed to read on.
It goes on to say: “All video shooting locations must be enclosed on all sides with a roof overhead.”
…confirming that play calling can be videotaped in other locations.
The complicating factor here is that the NFL Constitution and Bylaws imply that the prohibition was on tape obtained for use IN THAT GAME:
“Any use by any club at any time, from the start to the finish of any game in which such club is a participant, of any communications or information-gathering equipment, other than Polaroid-type cameras or field telephones, shall be prohibited, including without limitation videotape machines, telephone tapping, or bugging devices, or any other form of electronic devices that might aid a team during the playing of a game.”
The September 2006 memo confirmed that indeed, there was a loophole, and sought to close it (if it was clear in the first place there would be no need to clarify:
“videotaping of any type, including but not limited to taping of an opponent’s offensive or defensive signals, is prohibited on the sidelines, in the coaches’ booth, in the locker room, or at any other locations accessible to club staff members during the game.”
If you need any other proof that videotaping playcalling signals is actually LEGAL in the NFL you need look no further than the Dolphins use of taped playcalls in 2006 (AFTER the memo in question)
The NFL declined to even bother investigating that, noting that when it comes to the use of taping stolen signals “That’s football”

VIDEOtaping any signals is prohibited. Who is saying they didn’t break that rule? But you can capture signal any other way you want. Read what I am saying. Still camera, personnel on sidelines jotting observations down, guys with walkie-talkies talking to the coaches booth, etc, etc, etc. that happens at every game, College, NFL, you name it. Is it illegal? And it will happen next year, I can guarantee you that, and the year after. And they’re all cheaters, even your favorite team whoever that is.

Oops - sorry; I called out Ralphie in the last post. He gets it. Looks like Ron does not but this last post suggests he’s getting it.
Yes Ron - sitting in a box or in a giant plastic lemon and videotaping signals actually IS legal under the NFL rule.
Rediculous? I suppose so - but that’s the rule and I have a tough time believing that the Dolphins and the Patriots are the only teams to videotape signal calling when in fact it is perfectly legal from the right locations.
If Goodell were serious about the integrity of the game he might consider making all videotaping of signal calling illegal - but I think he knows it would be impossible to police, much like prohibiting signal stealing in the first place.
After all, there’s tons of video taken by all teams of all games - in case you weren’t aware they study this film in great detail in analyzing the game. No way does Goodell want to see whether teams are videotaping signals with telescopic lenses and mics - that’s why he didn’t bother with the Dolphins or the Jets when they were tossed out of Gilette for taping without permission.
But to reiterate what was said before - “that’s football” - its just that some fans don’t realize it.
Ignorance is bliss but I think thanks to Mangini, that’s all over now.

Mr. espnsux,
I am NOT a Panther Fan, just like most Pats fans aren’t from Boston and 90% of Steeler “Fans” have never been to Pittsburgh. And I am not Jets fan either.
Listen, I agree that Denver was wrong, Miami was wrong in tampering with Shula in 1970.
Yes the Pats have been crucified, mainly because of their attitude. Belichik only admitted to “misinterpreting” a rule. RIDICULOUS, and and Goodell never bought it for a second.
What is so bothersome about the Pats situation is that it is clear form Bledsoe’s recent comments that the QB was completely aware and participatory in the cheating. Therefore, Brady is implicit.
Schlereth wasn’t privy to salary cap shenanigans then. Bob Griese didn’t participate in luring Shula. Bledsoe knew. Brady knew. And he never took a STAND. He just stood by. This was players knowingly cheating in cahoots with the management over an EIGHT YEAR period.
Yes it’s done and I am glad there is no more. I love this game and want Specter’s sorry butt out of it and let’s move on.

Mark Schlereth is an idiot. Matt Walsh says he was in possession of the tapes for the whole game, so what does he do? Mark goes on to say how it would be unfair if they used it during a game, when the guy who has immunitiy is saying that he was in possession of the tapes the whole time. Did someone on the Pats’ staff kill his dog or something?

The Dolphins had used available video from television feeds to isolate audio. We could do that at home if we have the equipment and skill. They used broadcast footage along with coaches tape in sync and isolated audio. Crafty, yes. Illegal, no.
So while I may not be completely knowledgeable on the rule book itself, I do know that Goodell was saying that a team employee could not do what he did. Now if he was using a camcorder from a sky box, it would be nearly impossible to actually get a clear picture of the signal, just as at his more advantageous location it was difficult.
I get the point that Pats fans are trying to justify it by saying the only thing he did wrong was not be in a box. That was not the message the NFL sent.
I do appreciate your insight to the technical details of the rules. I am just pointing out that the hammer was dropped for cheating and today isn’t a day for Pats fans to celebrate. The Pats have humiliated themselves and the league and have tarnished their own legacy. Nobody else did this but them. It’s a sad day but I am glad it is over.
I believe Brady can win without cheating, btu it is a shame Brady cheated to get an advantage. He’s still a HOF QB and his records are valid. But it is forever blemished by BB’s actions.

Funny how the comments still debate the use of the tapes. Walsh’s own testimony corroborated what BB and the Pats said all along. Doesnt matter, questions are good.
But this little article is dead on Florio. You hit the nail on the head about Schlereth. He has an agenda and disregards the facts all the time. Sometimes I wonder how we hear him because I’m convinced he is talking out of his ass. That’s most of the time too. He has absolutely no credibility and isn’t that as bad as it gets in his position?

DanFoutsBeard,
I don’t think the Patriots use the signals other than to get tendencies anyway. Most teams don’t use the same signals from half to half nevermind game to game.
I still can’t think of a logical way that anyone during halftime can take the raw feed of the signals that aren’t matched up to plays and get something out of it in 10-15 minutes. Beside, Wlash said he retained the tapes the entire time game and only handed them over to Ernie Adams after the game.
