In a Tuesday afternoon interview with WEEI in Boston, Pats quarterback Tom Brady addressed the harping of former NFL players in the media about the videotaping of defensive coaching signals.
Asked one the hosts: “Does it surprise you some of the former players who are in the media now who just seem to be clueless about this whole thing? I’m stunned by it.”
Said Brady: “It’s just kind of the environment right now, though. I think that’s the way that guys make it. They just say the craziest things. . . . That’s what ESPN has become.”
We agree with Brady. And we were amazed by the insistence of guys like former Broncos offensive lineman Mark Schlereth that the videotapes created by Matt Walsh were used in the same game. Any moron (even Schlereth) could see that the final product was the result of an editing process that made the thing easier to watch. It would simply be too cumbersome to forward and/or rewind through the raw tape during the three total hours of a game (including a 12-minute halftime) to make any use out of this information in the second half.
Moreover, if the purpose of the taping was only to use it in the same game, why did the taping continue into the second half?
The bottom line? Schlereth is part of the ESPN agenda aimed at making some/any story out of this matter. Since there was no videotaping of the Rams’ walk-through prior to Super Bowl XXXVI, the media needs to talk about something else.
And so Schlereth and others are yammering about the videotaped signals being used for in-game adjustments, and pondering how that diminishes the Pats’ run of success this decade.
Meanwhile, Schlereth hasn’t once mentioned the tarnish on his own pair of Super Bowl rings because the Broncos cheated on the salary cap from 1996 through 1998. Though the cause-and-effect as it relates to the on-field product isn’t as obvious, circumventing the cap in order to avoid having to cut a veteran and replace him with a street free agent results in a higher quality team.
Indeed, let’s consider this quote from Schlereth, which he offered up on ESPN Radio on Tuesday afternoon: “This besmirches to the organization to the point where regardless of how you look at these three championships that they’ve won over the last seven, eight years you will still always look at them and say ‘Yeah, but . . . they had this Spygate thing, how much of it was inappropriate, how much cheating went on, and how much did it help them during the course of some of those games?”
Now, let’s revise it a bit, and apply it to Schlereth’s Broncos: “This besmirches to the organization to the point where regardless of how you look at these [two] championships that they’ve won over the [two] years you will still always look at them and say ‘Yeah, but . . . they had this [salary cap] thing, how much of it was inappropriate, how much cheating went on, and how much did it help them during the course of some of those games?”
Frankly, we think we prefer an intellectually honest guy who can’t talk all that well (i.e., Emmitt Smith) to a former player who looks and sounds good as the horsesh-t is flowing from his mouth.
So, ESPN, we rescind our request that you fire Emmitt. But we beg you to fire Schlereth. Now.

Schlereth did address the Broncos cheating on Michael Felger’s radio show in Boston. He said the Broncos didn’t cheat because the Broncos just pushed bonuses that were supposed to be paid in that year to later years. Isn’t that cheating since it gives them an artificially higher cap? So, in other words, his argument that the Broncos didn’t cheat was that the Broncos cheated.

Mike,
Mark Schlereth did own Broncos wrongdoing. He mentioned the Broncos did cheat the salary cap.
I do not like the grade school mentality of taking cheap shots at guys. I think when you engage in juvenile behavior it lessens the value of an otherwise excellent web site.

I know for a fact that you can edit video down very fast. If you know the exact time of the play in question it would be very easy to snip it and dump it into an edited version. Maybe like 6-10 minutes.

Big props to WEEI… Whenever I travel trough New England I always listen in… Schlereth and the rest just don’t get it… IT’S LEGAL TO STEAL SIGNALS.. you can tape them in a plane, you can tape them on a train, you can tape them from a boat, even from a Rose Bowl float… ya just can’t tape them from where the Pat’s did. It’s that simple.

Kudos to you Mike! I used to think you were unfairly biased against the Patriots, but I think you are one of the few in the media that has caught on that segments of the media are just on a witch hunt against the Patriots and have no desire to get to the truth. Schlereth clearly fits in that category.

Some people will just refuse to alter their concept of facts even after their mistakes have been exposed. The media always wants a story. It sells their product. What ESPN has been slinging lately has me not tuning their stations (TV or radio).
I refuse to compare bad behavior with bad behavior as a means to justify the actions of one versus the other. What Florio has done here is point out the hypocrisy of one versus the other which is always the best medicine for holier than thou grandstanding. Nice work.
The Patriots were wrong and they were punished, end of story. Those that cannot accept that should stop watching football. Seriously. Why buy a product that you believe is pushing dishonesty or being unfair to you?

Actually John Clayton mentioned that the 49ers had some salary cap issues that could tarnish their dynasty, and Schlereth said it was like comparing apples to oranges and didn’t really follow up. Now we know why, because his beloved team did it as well! I never thought I would miss Sean Salisbury until today. The funniest thing is that when this first happened, Schlereth was one of the ones who said that this shouldn’t tarnish anything and so on. Amazing how he changed his tune today. The kicker for me though is that every other station I watched today basically said that they hope this is over, while Sportscenter teaser had Sal Pal saying that this might not be over yet. For the love of god NFLN, make yourself available on all the networks and put your studio shows in HD

Will someone answer this. Not trying to be a d*ck and pile on, just something doesn’t add up to those not biased for the Patriots (like this website and ESPN).
So if they don’t use the footage to help them in the game, why would they film the Chargers signals in 2002? That was the only time they would play them all year. The Chargers were not a playoff caliber team, so the chances of them meeting in the playoffs were going to be very small. This footage would be worthless to them after the game, so it kind of makes sense that they made it worth something during the game, doesn’t it?
The fact that they went through these great lengths to film opposing teams signals for that many years has to mean it helped them somehow. Maybe not dramatically, but enough to make them do it despite knowing it was wrong. During the game actually does seem logical, so maybe just maybe Schlerreth is right, and maybe just maybe Brady is trying to defend the Patriots legacy. Brady would have more of an agenda than Mark Schlereth. By keep saying this footage didn’t help them and it wasn’t used in the game doesn’t really answer the question. Why did they do it all these years?

KY:
How can you say dynasties don’t lose Super Bowls? Isn’t it better than say losing in the championship game or other playoff round? The Bears of the 40s lost in the championship game during their dynasty run by Halas. More to the point, all of them the Steelers, Niners, and Cowboys all lost playoff games at some point during their run yet we still call them dynasties. Would we not call them dynasties had they lost in the Super Bowl instead of an earlier round of the playoffs? What if the Patriots had won in January? Would you still say they aren’t a dynasty because the year after their first SB win, they missed the playoffs?

I think people are finally beginning to understand the issues here, thanks mainly to Florio and PFT.
Not that it should be viewed as a huge compliment. Reading the NFL rulebook isn’t rocket science - but apparently Florio is the only one who did and he found that:
1.) Stealing signals is legal, and
2.) Videotaping signals is also legal
Those two facts kindof takes the wind out of the sails of anyone who claims that Belichick is the football equivilent of the anti-Christ.
What isn’t legal is videotaping signals from the sidelines and other specified areas on the field and accessible to team personnel, and thus there’s no question that Belichick violated a rule.
But even today, the NFL still allows taping of signals for non-game day use, just as the Dolphins admitted they did in 2006.
In some ways, the so called “Spygate” is illegal in the same sense Jaywalking is.
Walking is legal. And walking across the street is legal - as long as you do so at the authorized locations.
But walk across the street outside of the crosswalk, and you’ll get a slap on the wrist and a fine.
While the Patriots monetary penalty was far less than the $2 million the Broncos were fined for twice ignoring the Salary Cap in order to win their Super Bowls, Goodell wanted to send a message to the league that “he’s the boss” and did so by taking away the #31 pick.
But make no mistake about it - now that neither the league nor the media can deny that videotaping stolen signals is legal, this appears to be far less of a scandal.

Florio, you are taking it too far on Schlereth. I am quite sure that Mark had no idea what was going on in the accounting office. Brady knew he was participating on some form of cheating. We know this because Bledsoe admitted knowing it. It’s one thing when the accountants cheat, which was wrong, it was another when Miami tampered with Colt’s coach Don Shula in 1970. It is quite another when an entire team or an entire offense takes the field KNOWING that they have knowledge gained from cheating.
Yeah ESPN is a hype machine and yes they suck, but Schlereth is actually one of the decent ones in that crew. He is actually relatively smart and talented. Emmitt have no bidness on dey set.
They prefaced everything they said today with just speculation, and then they speck-a-lated.
Nobody remembers the Broncos creative accounting but people will always remember Bill Beeelichik cheating and Brady and Bledsoe knew it and cheated along with them. They really didn’t need to but they did and then BB wants to say he misinterpreted the rules. The GENIUS didn’t know but Matt Walsh knew it was wrong, but BB didn’t. SO he lied to the Commish about it too?
I know you are happy today FLorio, and I am actually happy too so this can be over and we can move on (I want the NFL to hold up integrity-wise) but don’t freaking CELEBRATE the Patriots, because, and without regard to anybody else, we just verified that they only cheated one particular way for eight years and during a Championship game.
It’s still a sad day because people like Beli-Cheat have made a mockery of our league.
Today the Patriots still cheated for eight years, BB Brady Walsh and whoever. BB is a disgrace to the league and to the sport.

ESPN tries to make news out of everything they want to. For example, look at Bobby Knight, everything he did was under scrutiny by ESPN and when things were slow, they would make the incident last for at least a week. Then they hire him. He should be swearing on every live broadcast just to stick it to them. Then look at when David West slapped Dirk Nowitzki. Nothing. If it had been Ron Artest, or some other person that they know would generate a buzz, then it would have taken over sportscenter. ESPN creates the news that it wants, the only reason to watch it is because it is the only channel that shows highlights non-stop. PTI and Around the Horn are all right, but those guys sometimes/a lot of the time go on moral diatribes that most of them never played sports. For example, claiming that a team can run up the score in a PROFESSIONAL football league (like Florio). Not jumping on LT when he is pouting on the bench like TO and screaming at his teammates. I could go on, but you get the point.

Personally I think the PATS taping of opponent’s signals were used both ways - for the same game and for future games. The AFC Championship game vs. Pittsburgh? You mean to tell me that they taped the signals in that game to use for the following seasons. That makes no sense to me whatsoever when personnel and coaching staffs change drastically from year to year. They obviously had everything down to a science having done it for so many years and who’s to say unequivocally that they weren’t using the ‘raw, unedited’ footage on the fly for use in the AFC Championship game.

With all due respect Florio, stick to law, not the creation, manipulation, speed, analysis and use of databases. The information from those takes would be quite easy to use in the 3rd and 4rth quarters of the same game. The framework of the database can certainly be set up beforehand for rapid inputting. Whether or not they did in fact do so is a different story, but it can in fact be done and used.
