NFL prospects often have unrealistic expectations of where they’ll be drafted. But quarterback Andre Woodson, whom the Giants selected out of Kentucky in the sixth round, might have had the least realistic assessment of his own draft position of any player chosen this year.
Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News reports that Woodson was off by four rounds: He thought he was going to be a second-round pick. And he still can’t understand what happened to make him fall all the way to the latter portion of the second day of the draft.
“I really don’t know,” Woodson said. “I think a lot of people still to this day don’t really know why I dropped as much as I did.”
Woodson doesn’t say exactly why he thought he was a second-round pick, but his biggest problem may have been listening to media assessments during his senior year in Kentucky, when some of the alleged draft experts had Woodson pegged not just as a first-day pick but potentially as the first overall pick in the draft.
The lesson Woodson learned is one that a lot of college football players should learn: Just because Mel Kiper says you’re a first-round pick in October doesn’t mean Roger Goodell will call your name in the first round in April.

I think that if Carr wasn’t able to beat out Matt Moore last year for the Panthers, then yes Carr is an abysmal backup

The NFL Advisory Board only speaks to potential early entries, Woodson was a senior… somebody please let the guy that wrote that borrow a brain.
Chris from MD, why didn’t the Bucs take Woodson instead of Josh Johnson? Are you serious? Woodson has a very slow release, Johnson’s is lightning fast, Woodson is sacked far too often and has terrible footwork in the pocket, Josh Johnson is extremely nimble and has great feet in the pocket, Woodson played in the spread offense in college which doesn’t prepare a guy for the NFL, Josh Johnson played in the WCO at San Diego-the same offense run in Tampa, Woodson looked and played like total crap at the Senior Bowl, Johnson was the clear cut star of the East-West game. What did/can Woodson do that Johnson didn’t/can’t? He’s much bigger, but since when is a 6′3″ QB considered too small for the WCO? Woodson has very good arm strength (with a dreadfully slow release), since when does arm strength matter over accuracy, release, footwork and the ability to read the defense in the WCO? Woodson played well in the SEC… how many Super Bowls have Danny Wuerffel, Quincy Carter, Tee Martin and Chris Leak combined to win?
Woodson would be a dreadful fit in the WCO… Johnson’s best fit is in the WCO… JJ going to Tampa makes perfect sense.

I’m still bewildered as to how Josh Johnson had a 43:1 TD to interception ratio. I CANNOT get over that.

Wonderlic, bad pre snap reads, horrible throwing motion, horrible pro day, stunk at the senior bowl, not a leader,…etc. The kid can play football. I watched about five or six Kentucky games this year, and the kid kept them in every game. He made a lot of nice throws and seemed to be able to drive them down late every game. The SEC has some of the fastest defenses in College, and he was able to score at will against them. I am still shocked that Carolina and Chicago let this kid get by them after he lasted to the fourth.
Matt Ryan through 19 picks in one season against a weaker big East schedule, and he is dubbed as the smart QB. Woodson dominated all year long, and all of sudden he is a dumb QB, he was a pocket QB.
Joe Flacco could not beat out Tyler Palko at Pitt, but he makes some nice throws at the Senior Bowl and all of sudden he is a first round pick. Yeah Flacco looked nice at Delaware, but he could not cut the mustard at Pitt.
Flacco being drafted on day 1 is a testament to whomever his agent is. Woodson falling to the Giants in the latter part of the draft is an indicator that his agent must suck.
The Giants have a great young QB to back up Eli. They will probably end up getting a day one pick for trading the guy in 3 or 4 years.

Well, kids, in college, like the NFL, sometimes the offense around you matters as to your TD/INT ratio. And yeah, on paper a lot of things look great. But also, QBs don’t go head to head (dick v with your Palko v. Flacco argument) and at the QB position, decision-making matters. If you can’t ace your own pro-day then don’t expect a big payday.
