Free-agent defensive tackle Anthony “Booger” McFarland is 30 years old and coming off a serious knee injury, and so far there’s been little if any interest in acquiring his services.
But McFarland doesn’t appear to be retiring. He describes himself on his personal web site as “Coming soon to a team near you,” and his agent says he’ll conduct a private workout in Tampa on June 4 in an attempt to convince NFL teams that he’s healthy enough to play.
“He’s chomping at the bit to get with a team,” agent Karl Bernard tells John Harris of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. “He’s going to go through a series of drills indicating that he’s healed from the injury.”
Harris suggests that the Steelers could be the team to show interest in McFarland, although if the Steelers agree, they haven’t said so publicly. Steelers coach Mike Tomlin was an assistant in Tampa Bay from 2001 to 2005, when McFarland was a starting defensive tackle for the Buccaneers, but Steelers defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau runs a 3-4 front that uses defensive tackles differently than the Tampa 2 defense that McFarland has played in his entire NFL career.
Still, if McFarland can pass a physical, he can find work in the NFL. For a team that needs a defensive tackle, he’s one of the few still available.

…interesting bit of “reporting” by John Harris of the Pittsburgh Tribune Review, he usually just cuts and pastes stuff from PFT. The article reads like a press release written by McFarland’s agent.

The guys Tomlin has been drafting/signing are guys that could fit in a 3-4 or the Tampa 2. I think if they sign Booger he’ll play DE in the 3-4 until they switch to the Tampa 2.

Well someone might pick booger.teams desperate enough may give him a nibble.. But in the end he is going to find himself flung aside. I doubt hes going to stick anywhere.

Makes a lot of sense.
Bring in a proven veteran to smooth the transition to Tomlin’s preferred 4-3 defense.
The problem is, didn’t he already fail a team physical once, when they wanted to sign him earlier this off-season? At least if he can pass one now, they’ve driven his price down.

You will not see the Steelers switch to a 4-3 until Dick Lebeau either retires or dies. McFarland, in my opinion will be play DE if the Steelers sign him.

When I opened up the link to his website http://www.booger92.com I noticed there was no substance to it? No back end? Nothing… Maybe that tells us something? He should just rehab and find a team desperate for someone who can give a deliverable!

With the Raiders still unsure and unproven on their line, I’m surprised they haven’t given this guy a workout and offered him something to see if he makes it through camp. They need bodies and guys with some kind of talent instead of all the unproven commodities they’ve been paying. Perplexing. Maybe he wants too much.

I don’t know what his measurables are (I know, I know thats not very hard to find) but unless hes about 6′3 and 290 , I’m not sure that he fits the typical mold of a 3-4 DE, at least for the Steelers. He’s going to need to be ridiculously strong otherwise.
I guess it is a non issue as the only thing behind Smith/Keisel is Kirschke, McBean and Eason?
Shit putting it that way, sign him, who cares what shape he is.

What… Corey Simon wasn’t available? I cannot see Booger even making the team, so why not get a young gun instead of paying the veteran minimum for a guy who’s been on the back nine of his career for about three years now.

Well heck, you just know the Panthers want some. If they’re giving Darwin Walker and Ian Scott a chance, why wouldn’t they be interested (IF the money’s right)?

Are Booger McFarland and Corey Simon the same guy? I’ve never seen them in the same place at the same time. I mean, except on Injured Reserve.
