Comments that Rams wide receiver Torry Holt made last month about wanting to finish his career with the Panthers drew increased scrutiny at this weekend’s Rams minicamp.
Holt grew up in North Carolina, went to college at North Carolina State, and described himself as “jealous” when his younger brother, safety Terrence Holt, signed with the Panthers.
“I wanted to send in my resignation to the Rams and see if I could join him,” Torry Holt said last month about his brother playing for Carolina. “I’m excited, but I’m also a little jealous because I’ve always wanted an opportunity to come back home.”
The Rams had a minicamp over the weekend, and Holt was asked to elaborate. And rather than back down or claim his words were taken out of context, Holt simply explained how he feels: He’ll play out his current contract with the Rams, but once that expires, he’d love to finish his career close to home.
“The real story is that I have this year and next year and hopefully I can finish those years out,” Holt said. “Then I will see where I am at. I will see where I am at physically and emotionally and financially. Then, if they would like to do something here I will consider it. If not, then I will have the option to go and explore and give my services somewhere else. If that happens, Carolina will definitely be my first choice. There is no question about it. I have 2008 and 2009 left to play and that is what I plan on doing.”
Holt won’t be free to play for another team until 2010, when he’s 34 years old. So this is very premature. But his feelings are clear: He’d like to finish his career as a Panther.

If I were a Rams fan, I don’t know how I’d take this news. On one end, Holt is a HOF receiver who I would want to see retire as a Ram, on the other end, he’d be 34 years old, so if he felt that he wanted to go finish his career at home playing alongside his younger brother, I’d understand. If a player on my team was in his prime and said that I’d be angry with that player, but not so much when the player is looking to finish his career at home. Either way, as Holt appears to be assuming the mantle of “NFL’s Class-Act Receiver” from Harrison, if I were a Rams fan I’d want him and Bruce to retire as Rams…oops!

What’s the big deal about a player talking about wanting to play for his hometown team before his career is over? I have always liked Torry Holt but I don’t think he is close the the player he once was. Add to the fact St. Louis is horrible and will get worse before they get any better….Sheesh - let him go and rebuild.

The key point is in the last paragraph: he’ll be 34 years old by the time he’s ready to leave, so it’s tough to imagine him putting up Pro-Bowl numbers at that point in his career.

I guess the way Im reading it is.. He would welcome to finish off his career in one spot.. But he feels it is unlikely that the Rams will give him an extension for what he wants. So Carolina would be his first choice as a free agent.

What I’d like to know is, why does it seem like every free-agent-to-be either wants to end up in Carolina or is pimped by the media as Carolina being the best fit….has Carolina done something extraordinary that we’re not all aware of?

In an era when an “internet hack” has to scour the wire daily in order to make sure the “days without an arrest” column is accurate, I have no problem with him wanting to finish out his hall of fame career in his home state. He is the anti-Ocho Stinko.

I wonder what his cap numbers look like for the next two years … are they high enough where STL would consider cutting him thus allowing him to go to CAR sooner …
I too don’t see anything wrong with wanting to go finish your career at home … I mean, he’s already helped STL win a Super Bowl so why not go home to wrap up a very good career …

Rumors,
hard to imagine, but not under the right circumstances: T.O. went to the probowl at 34.

At least he isn’t crying up a storm trying to get out of his contract. I’m a Lambs fan, and I see nothing wrong with what Torry is saying. I’d like to see him retire a Ram, but I’ll still root for him if he left.

He’s from North Carolina and his brother now plays there, thats why he wants to go back. Also, his knee is killing him, he may not even play beyond the end of this contract.
I hope Torry finishes with the Rams but Issac Bruce wanted to finish with us too but wouldn’t renegotiate his contract from $5 million to $3 million. The Rams thought he wasn’t worth $5 million (which as much as I love Issac, he isn’t) and let him go play for that tool Martz. If Torry’s knee continues to cause him problems is he going to be worth the $5-$6 million that he asks for in two years. Prolly not. Sucks but thats the reality.

Bruce is way washed up. Rams have cut better and faster guys waiting for IB to regain form. Holt still has 3 good years at least.
