Though agent Jim Steiner recently said that he intended to talk to the Bengals last week about the possible contract for running back Shaun Alexander, Mark Curnutte of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports that no talks have occurred.
“Nothing yet,” Steiner told Curnutte on Friday.
Curnutte also says that the addition of Alexander is unlikely, given the presence of Rudi Johnson, Chris Perry, Kenny Watson, and DeDe Dorsey on the roster.
In our view, the Bengals would seriously sniff around Alexander only if they were planning to displace Johnson. But Curnutte writes that the Bengals plan to keep Johnson as the featured back.
So why then did the Bengals bring in Alexander? Maybe they were hoping to light a little bit of an offseason fire under Johnson.
Or maybe they wanted a national story about the team that didn’t include the names “Chad Johnson” or “Chris Henry.”

Shaun Alexander certainly isn’t what he was in 2005 (and some would say he wasn’t all that much to begin with), but one thing for sure about him–he’s not going to be contributing toward the Bungles’ “Turd Watch” points. It might be worth paying him the veteran minimum contract (laden with incentives) just for some veteran locker room stability.

It was merely a “what harm could it do” favor to Steiner.

incentives is the only way someone should sign him. It’s how he does his best work.

Alexander was a great player for a few years, but he is washed up now. For good.

The Ravens may want a short yardage back for vet minimum. Why would he want to go to Cincy for less than bail money.
Ocho Stinko may be crazy but he is no fool. He knows he wont last 10 minutes on a Cincy HWY before he winds up getting Cedric Bensoned.

I traded Alexander for Ronnie Brown in my Keeper League when Ronnie went down. Damn I am a genius.

Bengals don’t need Alexander, this article fails to mention there is also a 2nd round pick from last year in Kenny Irons that has yet to make it through even a preseason. The only back I’d see them dropping is Kenny Watson and then only if Shaun “I’m going to build a youth center in my hometown” Alexander was willing to be the third down back.

Right, but as of right now Kenny Irons is Ki-Jana Carter 2.0. He has to actually play a down without being carted off the field before you can count on the guy.

Well Kenny isn’t expected to be ready anytime soon nor does kenny effect the intrest of alexander,Bengals interest in Alexander is probably to push Rudi and if Rudi can’t beat shaun out then they get a cheaper short yardage back….

Eh It’s abit early to call Kenny Ki jana x2 when 2 carry Perry was drafted in 2004 and has only played one season…if Kenny is injured the entire season this year thats a different story.

Has Alexander reached the end of the line? Even in his diminished form, I think he’d rank at least second best at running back in Cincinnati.

I’m sure you meant 3.0. Version 2.0 is Chris Perry.

Guys like Alexander always have one last great year in them following a couple years of injuries. For instance Jamal Lewis last year, and Stephen Davis who the Panthers rode to the SB - though Davis wasn’t hurt just not used by the Skins. Still, a team with a decent line looking for a one year back would be smart to sign Alexander.

I C light pounder,
You are CRAZY. The Steelers didn’t beat the Seahawks bad in the Super Bowl. They didn’t even beat them at all.
The referees beat the Seahawks and everyone knows it. As far as I can count, the Steelers have 4 SB wins and the Seahawks have one. I don’t care what the books say. And I am not a fan of either team.
But don’t come on here pretending the Steelers beat them bad. That is as big of a joke as the refs were. They should have won the MVP and marched in your parade through that dump of a city.

Jeremiah W, a Head Coach, says: “The Ravens may want a short yardage back for vet minimum. Why would he want to go to Cincy for less than bail money.”
Because even with last seasons with numerous injuries and suspensions, the BENGALS were 7-9 , while the lowly Ravens were only 5-9, and the BENGALS have beaten the Ravens 3 out of the last 4 they’ve played.
“Ocho Stinko may be crazy but he is no fool. He knows he wont last 10 minutes on a Cincy HWY before he winds up getting Cedric Bensoned.”
You act like you can get away with murder in Baltimore.Oh yeah, my bad.
