Giants offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride has spoken with tight end Jeremy Shockey about his status with the team. And while Gilbride has shared some of the details regarding the discussion, Gilbride wouldn’t answer the $64,000 question.
Does Shockey want to stay in New York?
As to the prospect of a return by the 2002 first-round draft pick, Gilbride said, “It’s so nebulous right now, you just have no idea. Right now he’s on our team. We’re planning on him being there. He’ll be one of the guys that we’ll look to feature and one of the guys that we’ll look to depend on. Hopefully he’ll be here in good spirits and ready to do the things that we know he’s capable of doing. But who knows? It’s certainly beyond my hands.”
Shockey is believed to want both a trade and a new contract. There have been rumors and reports that he’s unhappy with the fact that the team ripped through the playoffs and won the Super Bowl without him, and that he’s bothered by talk that the team is better without him.
The Saints pursued him before the draft, and presumably still want him.
Whether a trade happens likely depends on Shockey’s disposition and demeanor when he reports for a mandatory minicamp on June 11.
If he reports for it. Though Shockey hasn’t hinted at a holdout, it wouldn’t surprise us if it happens.

The fact is, the Giants were better without Shockey. Just look at how Eli Manning came into his own after Shockey was sidelined by injury. It was a night-and-day reversal of form, and it’s nearly impossible not to think that Shockey, who tends to demand a lot of attention from coaches and colleagues alike, wasn’t a factor.
For more than one reason, the Giants should look at facilitating a trade for this disgruntled player.

I think it’s obvious after the Giants’ late season showing and playoff run that the team is much better off without him. The fact that they haven’t unloaded him yet surprises me.

I hate all the “There have been rumors Shockey is unhappy his team won the SB without him”… That’s crap. I’ve joked about it before I ‘heard’ the rumors, so it’s just a bunch of people, either fans, or in the media, that have created this perception, and are trying to twist the whole thing around.

I would like to see him go at this point, but if he doesn’t it will be interesting to see if now that Eli has tasted success if he will take control & tell Shockey it is his (Eli’s) offense. Hmmmmm

The shock treatment has worn thin… He is not the consummate team player as he showed while injured. I was embarrassed watching him pound down a few during the playoff run. The Shockey era in NYC has passed. Get whatever you can for him and move on.

If Shockey has been humbled by the Giants’ Super Bowl win, then he is worth keeping as he’s a great weapon. If there is even the slightest bit of a hint that he’s going to be a problem, he needs to go.

I’d be bothered, too, if people say the team is better than me (if I had the skills that Jeremy Shockey has). The New York Giants are positively not better without Shockey. They went on a roar and deserve their ring, but c’mon.
My belief is that Shockey absolutely wants a ticket out of town. But he’ll probably play for them this year … put up great numbers … Giants don’t win the Super Bowl … He gets blamed.

Shockey has become the TO of Tight Ends… He is highly over-rated. I love it whenever he comes to Philly, the crowd screams… “Shockey Sucks”

As a “veteran” Giants fan, I believe I speak for many of us when I say we love and want Shockey. And the fact that someone could even say he is the “T.O.” of tight end is ridiculous. He has not once publicly spoken poorly of his team, or made any mention of his current situation. I think he is handling himself as a professional and keeping all the talks behind closed doors. If he stays I will be a very happy fan, and if he leaves I wish him all the luck in the world.

Shockey needs to show up this season and show everyone that the NYG can win a SB with him! But if he’s going to whine and complain Eli needs to put him in his place.

Shockey, like Meshawn Johnson, was a decent player who the NY media hyped into a star far in excess of their performance. If either of these guys had been drafted by small market teams they’d have been mired in mediocrity like they deserve.

I do not agree that it is fair to say the giants are better without him (although I think they are)…My point is better or not, they proved they can win without him… So, bringing it to the point that they are better should not arise, they won without him, part ways and move on…

“GeauxSaints12, how many Superbowls has Drew Brees won?”
Give me a break!
@nybeez80 - How many Super Bowls has Dan Marino won? A big zero. Are you implying that Eli Manning is a better QB then Dan Marino? I still think based on consistancy, most NFL fans would place Drew Brees slightly above Eli Manning at this time. Besides, look at the stats for that Super Bowl victory, and you’d realize that the defense won that game for the Giants. Give it another year before you start carving up Eli Manning’s bust in Canton.

Kellyb, who is comparing Eli to Dan Marino? You arrived at that yourself. As a NYG fan, I am very curious to see how Eli does this season. It would be good for him to be able to maintain the maturity he showed in the playoffs this past year.

Giants should be rid of Shockey. Good player but a bad team mate. I grew tired of watching him harass Eli all the time when he didn’t get the ball. Yes the Giants defense won the Superbowl, but their offense still had to score to win and they played as a good group throughout the playoffs.
Shockey is a bit over rated, the Giants don’t need him to win and they definitely don’t need him causing problems in the huddle
