Though the Ravens and linebacker Ray Lewis are miles apart in their effort to reach a new deal that would replace a contract that expires after the 2008 season, Lewis says that the lack of an agreement won’t affect his performance.
“That stuff is irrelevant for what we’re trying to do right now,” Lewis said, according to the Carroll County Times. “The bottom line is whatever we’re trying to do as a team, that’s the focus. If we keep that team concept there, then that team concept stays there.
“If you start talking about individual, that means nothing. Everybody knows this is a business and everything will take care of itself. I’m just excited to be back playing football again.
“I see myself getting ready for the next practice, and I see myself getting ready for the season. Like I said, once you start to get on that side of things, you lose your passion about why you play this game.”
The Ravens currently are gathered for a mandatory minicamp, in which Lewis is fully participating.
Lewis has played for the franchise since 1996, their first year as the Baltimore Ravens. If a new agreement isn’t reached by next March, Lewis will become an unrestricted free agent, for the first time in his career.

I can’t see Lewis in another uni other than a Ravens one. They’ll get a deal done before free-agency.

Ray’s contract won’t be a distraction. But the fact that he can’t play anymore, will.

Say what you want about him as a man, but he is one hell of a football player. I like the way he’s handling this.

Ray was leading the NFl in tackles the first 15 weeks, until he broke his hand, and stayed in the game, making tackles.
Last year the Ravens had a lot of injuries, led the NFL in fumbles, and gave up a lot of big pass plays by our back up corners, but Ray was doing his thing. The run defense was still as stout as ever allowing 2.8 ypc. Still #6 D overall thanks to Ray picking off or swatting more passes than any MB should.
2006 Ray was the leading tackler on the best defense in the NFL since 2000.
He is still the best middle linebacker in the NFL, and Urlacher still is not better than him.
The Ravens will not let him hit the open market. They should have the franchise tag option available by then, and if not they will pony up an offer he don’t refuse.
His play has not slipped at all. He has been hamped some by injury, but he is worth keeping around as a coach and motivator long after his best on feild days are behind him.
Look at film from any Raven game and tell me the play you saw Ray get beat by his man or play a bad game. There is ussually a lot of blame to go around, but I have seen every game he has played, and I don’t remember seeing him have a bad one. 2004 vs KC maybe when Shields and Waters were able to get to him in the 3-4 scheme, but he still played pretty well.

@ Ravenmaniac
rayg does not have to be a steeler fan to see the truth. after taking and making hit after hit for 12 seasons, he can’t be the same player he once was. not saying he’s terrible, but he is not the player he once was. he’s a 33 yr old MLB in his 13th season. the last time he has finished a full season was 2003, so the injury bug has clearly crept up on him along with the age factor. he is still the emotional leader of that team, and he still has the smarts to know help him be in a good position, but there’s no way he’s as valuable as the ray lewis of the past.

He’s a Raven for life. They’ll work it out. He knows it and the team knows it. They’ll set it up so he can retire a Raven.

Ask Willy Parker who is the best MB in the NFL. If he does not say Ray, then ask him why he only gets about 2 ypc and a headache when he plays Baltimore. Ray may have rattled the part of his brain that stores that info.

If there’s one thing you can say about the Ravens - it’s that they’re loyal. Just ask Art Modell and the residents of Cleveland.

Stiller43,
You are are correct….Ray probably is not the player he was several years ago, but you have to admit he still has a big motor! He is still the best MLB to EVER play in the NFL! Your point is proven on your own #43 Troy Polumalu, he is no where near the player he was 4 years ago.
I still say Rayg is a Steelers fan……

I’m not a steelers fan. Not even an AFC fan, Stiller43.
Best MLB’s to ever play the game?
Try:
Ray Nitchske
Dick Butkus
Mike Singletary
Jack Lambert

I’m just curious to see if the Cowgirls or Deadskins throw an offer at Lewis that B’More won’t match and Lewis can’t turn down. It wouldn’t shock me if they did.

I would bet Marvin Lewis, Phil Savage, and Mike Nolan are foaming at the mouth at thoughts of having a shot at Ray Lewis.
Trust me, he is not going anywhere!
