"They atleast covered someone."

I take it you didn't watch Dawkins last year.

"They are not the hitters That Roy is supposed to be."

I take it you just started watching the NFL. Roy is a hitter and he's obviously pretty good at it, judging by the number of dropped balls his mere footsteps cause. He's such a ferocious tackler the NFL had to make a brand new rule to try to mitigate the damage he does. Unfortunately for the NFL, they'll never be able to legislate injuries out of the game, particularly since they don't want to address cut-blocking, which takes out more wheels on a yearly basis than all horse collar tackles combined have.

"His hitting is supposed to be his strongsuit. You must not know S about the safety position. It is a playmaking, SAFETY Position."

Yeah, I know all about the safety position. You want a playmaker back there? Roy's your guy. Like I said before, more INTs than Dawkins had in his first six seasons, more TDs than Dawkins has had in his entire career. Landry's only got a year under his belt, but still -0- INTs. Reed is more like a 2nd free safety, with the freedom he has in the defensive backfield. RW's numbers are almost identical to Sanders' last year.

"Safety for SAFE meaning last line of DEFENSE. If you are hoping they do not throw it your way, HOW IN THE F CAN YOU BE THE LAST LINE OF DEFENSE? YOU ARE BLINDED OR STUPID!"

Don't hate on RW for being honest and saying things that others would never have the balls to say. Those who truly know the game, know that Roy Williams is a player that gets a bad deal from the media, which leads a lot of fans around by the nose because they don't know any better.

“Plus, I saw maybe one decent hit out of your 100+ tackles last year and that guy was off balance when you hit him. What kind of big hitting safety does not cause a fumble at all?”

Um, dunno, maybe the Brian Dawkins kind? Maybe the Ed Reed kind? Maybe even the Bob-Sanders-NFL-Defensive-Player-of-the-Year kind? Maybe the LaRon Landry kind? None of those guys forced any fumbles last year, either. Maybe Lawyer Milloy? He hasn’t forced a fumble since 2003, going on 400 tackles since then.

"I laughed and celebrated when the Chargers drafted Quentin Jammer over Roy Williams. I was wrong."

You know, it's funny. Jammer isn't really one of those corners that's so feared that nobody throws his way so he's had the opportunity, but Williams has more INTs than him, too. Eight more, in fact. He's yet to score his first TD on a pick 6, but Williams already has three. I'd rather have Williams. Williams may have trouble with guys like Moss and Shockey, but Jammer routinely gets burned by guys like Crayton.

"Vox - if Williams is so good in coverage, why are the cowboys talking about taking him out on 3rd down?"

Don't believe every little rumor that you read. If the Cowboys had a better option, he'd be the full-time starter instead of Roy Williams because 3rd down is not the only down that NFL teams will pass on.

"As for the guy who used some stats to try to make Roy Williams seem better than Brian Dawkins… PLEASE… B-Dawk is 10 times the saftey that Williams ever will be"

Based on what?

"(which will only be further proven when Dawk gets inducted to the hall of fame and the closest that Roy will get is watching it on TV.)"

I wouldn't buy a ticket to see Dawkins inducted just yet if I were you. Cliff Harris ain't in the Hall of Fame. If a 6 time Pro Bowler and two time Super Bowl winning member of the 1970's All Decade team can't get in, what makes you think that Dawk can? There aren't many safeties in the HoF to begin with so I also wouldn't expect the Board of Selectors to all of a sudden start inducting a bunch of safeties but if they DO, it's gonna be guys like Harris and Atwater and Woodson and Reed and a host of others that deserve and will get consideration before Dawkins or Williams will ever even see their names on a HoF ballot.

"Think back to that beautiful night of September 19th when Santana Moss made Roy Williams look absolutely foolish! Now I don’t profess to be an expert in the subject of safety play but I do know when you play a 2 deep zone that you are supposed to be DEEPER than the WR… instead Roy chose to play the underneath coverage position right beside the corner so they could both watch Moss run away from them for the 2 TDs!"

You're assuming that the Cowboys were playing cover 2 on those plays. They weren't, at least not on both plays. Watch them again. I'd be willing to let Williams take the rap for one of those because he had to make a choice between covering two WRs that were going deep, and he chose the wrong one. The catch 22 is that no matter which one he covered, Brunnell was going to the other guy. And he did. As Williams jumped the shorter route, Brunnell let it fly to Moss, who had completely burned Aaron Glenn, who was one-on-one with Moss. Williams was fast enough to get near the play, in fact he ended up closer than toasty Aaron Glenn ever got to Moss on that play, but it was too late. Terrible coverage by Glenn, but that was also a great play call. But yeah, if you want to get ticky-tacky, Williams was caught out of position to make the play.

On the other one, for whatever odd reason Glenn lined up 6 or 7 yards outside Moss, basically covering nobody and Moss was left one-on-one with Williams, who was playing about 15 yards deep in cover 2, all the way down the field. This time Glenn was fast enough to get in close enough to make a desperate swat at the ball, but he hung Williams out to dry on that play. Santana Moss left one-on-one with any safety for 70 yards should be 6 points every time, especially without somebody jamming him at the line. Come on, the guy runs a 4.3 40!

Listen to the hatters in here wow you guys are sad..Roy previous to this season was makin it happen on the feild. There aint to many safties out there covering the top TE's in this league period. previous to maybe this last season he earned every pro bowl ballot fair and square..and was the second leading tackler on the team this year. it was definitly a down year for his but at this point saying any thing more than that is just down right hatin..

Roy Williams made me look like an idiot. I predicted he would revolutionize the Cowboys Defense like Randy Moss came in and did for the Vikings Offense. This was when he was coming out of college, mind you, and I laughed and celebrated when the Chargers drafted Quentin Jammer over Roy Williams.

I was wrong.

There, I said it and I already feel better about the situation. I can move on now. Hope the Cowboys do the same...

Zero reason to include baseless WR trade rumors in this. Why would the Lions trade him now? They could have gotten a 1st this year from any one of the 3 NFC East teams bidding for him most likely and maybe even more but refused to move him. Nice try PFT this is an example of things you should be legitimately criticized for.

As Cowboy fans, we all want Roy to be great- his sucess is ours.
But the rap on him in the draft is the same as a pro-"a liability in coverage". The fact that he's not improved?, what with all the practices and pro coaching- in addition it's said he could use / do more studying of film-not to mention he's yet to accept / admit responsibility for his shortcomings says more about him than any detractor ever could. He's putting the "Not For Long" in N.F.L,
on his own. Men make systems, not the other way around--stop blaming the system Roy- just fuggin play better-

As Cowboy fans, we all want Roy to be great- his sucess is ours.
But the rap on him in the draft is the same as a pro-"a liability in coverage". The fact that he's not improved?, what with all the practices and pro coaching- in addition it's said he could use / do more studying of film-not to mention he's yet to accept / admit responsibility for his shortcoming says more about him than any detractor ever could. He's putting the "Not For Long in N.F.L on his own. Men make systems, not the other way around--stop blaming the system Roy- just fuggin play better-

As a Cowboy fan,we'd all like to see Roy Williams succeed, as his is ours. But fact of the matter is- his rap coming out of college is the same all these yrs as a pro-he's a liability in coverage. The fact that he's not once taken responsibility for it nor improved it w- coaching, film study, not to mention his reported "questionable" study habits says more about him than anything we could.
I fear he may be putting the "Not For Long" in N.F.L-

Vox - if Williams is so good in coverage, why are the cowboys talking about taking him out on 3rd down?

He needs to drop 20lbs or gain 20lbs and switch positions.
He used to be a fearless and reckless tackler but that was when he had Darren Woodson (HoF?) covering 80% of the field.
This says more about Woodson's abilities than Williams tackling.

It's just too hard to pair him up with a coverage pro at FS.
Even Ken Hamlin, who made the pro-bowl as a FS, is really another hard-hitting SF who could easily replace Williams. It's difficult to find a good coverage FS to make up for Williams.

There is rumor that with Pac-Man Jones and Mike Jenkins added to the CB mix, that Anthony Henry could be moved to FS where on paper he could be the coverage guy that could let Williams roam and head-hunt like he wants to.

Seriously Roy, For 3 years the system has not fit you. Being scared to cover someone? It is a sad day that a DB is hoping they don't throw the ball your way. You did better in the 4-3. Maybe they can ship you to a team that employs the system. But it's not the system, It is you. Since you have not had Darren Woodson back there, you have looked completely lost. Plus, I saw maybe one decent hit out of your 100+ tackles last year and that guy was off balance when you hit him. What kind of big hitting safety does not cause a fumble at all? Every time you tackled someone, the guy got two more yards by pushing you back as you hit/tackled him. Your weak. You are washed up. Plus you have no idea how to take responsibility for anything. To any potentioal teams that may want to trade a 2nd or a good receiver, Forget the above and just think about him being a Perrenial Prow Bowler. He is great.

Since the Redskins just got their big new receivers, it'd be nice to see Roy Williams out of the division. The fewer horse-collars those boys take, the better.

At least this year with more depth at corner, at least Roy shouldn't have to worry about covering others mistakes. Last year he got exposed with half our secondary because we had no depth. It's not like it was all on him. Henry and Newman were injured so we had guys like Reeves and Jones playing. I think he'll be better off this year. Vox Veritas, I agree with everything you said.

I've been making a case for this for a few years now... and I really started banging the drum for this in 2005. Think back to that beautiful night of September 19th when Santana Moss made Roy Williams look absolutely foolish! Now I don't profess to be an expert in the subject of safety play but I do know when you play a 2 deep zone that you are supposed to be DEEPER than the WR... instead Roy chose to play the underneath coverage position right beside the corner so they could both watch Moss run away from them for the 2 TDs!

As for the guy who used some stats to try to make Roy Williams seem better than Brian Dawkins... PLEASE... B-Dawk is 10 times the saftey that Williams ever will be (which will only be further proven when Dawk gets inducted to the hall of fame and the closest that Roy will get is watching it on TV.)

Finally I can equate Roy Williams to one recent Eagles safety... Micheal Lewis... who consequently went from a pro bowl player to cut over the course of half a season, because much like Roy he was a in the box hard hitting "Safety" with no open field coverage skills to speak of. Roy is a S/LB tweener who is not suited to play either position in the Cowboys defense, he might be suited to play LB for a Tampa 2 system that utilizes smaller faster LBs???

There isn't a chance in hell the Cowgirls get rid of him. He's a good player. I heard the interview and it sounds like Roy is just keeping to himself...big deal. He's working out at 5-7:30 am and leaving when others are getting in. Big deal....Elis made it out to be that Roy was isolating himself...I wasn't buying it.
Elis just lost any friend in Roy he could or would have had after that interview. Insert foot into mouth

Dallas has the safety depth for a trade, they'd just move Hamlin down to SS and have Pat Watkins play FS, where he's shown some promise. As far as Williams being a liability in coverage, word has it that a lot of that is Parcells' fault. Eroded Williams' instinct, much like he did Julius Jones'. Think it's any coincidence that 3 years into Parcells' tenure neither player could play a lick when both looked very promising as rookies? That being said, I saw Williams get blown out of the whole a few too many times playing the run to have any real confidence in him.

Vox - Until I got the same answer out of my bro-in-law (huge Cowboys fan) I thought Roy was THE most overrated guy in the league...until you look at his game as 50% his own and 50% covering up someone elses mistakes he'll get the same treatment from the fans as he got in this forum...We'll trade Ced Benson for him here in Chicago!!! We need some safety help...!!!

Hilarious. He led the team in solo tackles last year, but he "can't tackle". Can't cover, but he's got more INTs (19) than Dawkins had at this point in his career (18) and the same number of returns for TDs as Dawkins has had his ENTIRE career (3), in spite of Dawkins being a free safety that is *supposed* to be faster and better in coverage.

Not that I think that Williams excels in coverage, in fact I think it's the weakest part of his game, but he's not nearly as bad as the media makes him out to be. Parcells said that Williams spends a lot of time covering the mistakes of others and many of the times when it LOOKS like he's getting burned, he's just running into somebody else's zone late in the play. Cowlishaw has stated that the NFL research
firm that he trusts the most insists that Williams is actually pretty good in coverage. Lastly, nobody makes the Pro Bowl on fan vote alone. Williams has been there for 5 years in a row because his peers know how good he is.

Sorry guys, but I'll side with the experts on this one.

I think ever since they outlawed his signature move ("Oh my god, Roy Williams is about to finish him off! The crowd knows it's coming, the players know it's coming, my God, ladies and gentlemen, the whole world knows it's coming!! It's...it's...THE HORSE COLLAR!!!") he just doesn't find football as enjoyable, maybe. I mean, what's more fun than having a guy run by you, then gripping the inside of his shoulder pads, yelling "GET OVER HERE!!!" while you hear the snapping of bones and the popping of joints?

You know what Greg Ellis just did to Roy Williams?

Well, this fine child, who I am sure will grow up to be a lovely lady, explains it best.

I don't think Dallas has the depth at safety to cut Williams this year, especially considering the possibility that Ken Hamlin very likely could be gone next year. You can't be a DB in the NFL if you lack confidence, and it's easy to see from recent interviews that Roy has none. This is a guy that used to be one of the most feared players in the league for his bone crunching hits, and now he lacks the ability to wrap someone up and bring them down. He just doesn't seem to play with passion anymore, and I can't imagine the guy having much trade value, in spite of the fact that he's a perennial Pro Bowler. Other teams are quite aware of the fact that he's a coverage liability. It's starting to seem like a lot of these big hitting safeties that can't cover are having shorter life spans in the league (see Adam Archuleta). I think for at least the next couple years, Dallas is just going to have to deal with him and his inflated contract.

YYYYYYEEEEEESSSSS!!!!!! Please please please please let Biscuit go Wade!

JayPhilly said it best - he is the Jeremy Shockey of safeties. He needs to lose 20 pounds to become an average coverage guy or gain 20 and become an OLB. Of course, the Cowboys could improve their seconday if they lost 230 pounds of overrated safety.

Is Dallas really any worse without the most overrated player in the league? He can't cover the deep ball and has to rely on the horse collar so often b/c of his poor angles to the ball carrier. The guys reputation is based on some nice highlight material hits he had early in his career.

Guess he's getting sensitive to the bloggers lambasting his performance.

Dallas won't cut him, if anything they'd trade him, but I suspect that won't come til next year. Dallas would be a tad short on Safeties if they simply let him go.

Sorry, but Dallas DID change things up for Williams. He played closer to the line and they tried to keep him from having single coverage responsibility (not that offenses ran plays specifically to get him into single coverage) and to let him use his 'human missile' tackling techniques, but he still was a non-factor pretty much.

Hopefully Campo can help him improve his coverage skills and I hear he has lost 10-15 lbs in an effort to gain some speed.

I think having a better 3rd corner will help him a lot as well.

Yeah, any defense that requires a safety run at a pace faster than a jog and demands that safeties wrap up when tackling won't fit Roy "overrated" Williams. That guy might be the most overrated player in the NFL.

Any safety that needs to COME OUT on third down because he can't cover a TE should be selling insurance.

He never was a "good" cover guy, and now since tackling is no longer allowed in "tackle" football, he may be on a short leash. I still believe he could be a decent OLB if he put on 20 lbs.
