With two picks in the first half of the first round and 12 draft picks overall, the Kansas City Chiefs will have the league’s most expensive 2008 rookie class.

John Clayton of ESPN.com has the complete breakdown of the 2008 NFL rookie salary pool, and he reports that the Chiefs have a rookie pool of $8,221,790, which is the highest in the league. Following close behind are the Falcons, at $7,918,670. Atlanta had 11 picks, including the third and 21st in the first round, plus No. 37 overall near the top of the second round.

The Dolphins have the next-highest rookie pool and can pay their rookies $6,538,400. According to Clayton, first overall pick Jake Long, who signed a five-year contract before the draft, has a $3 million cap number, leaving $3,538,400 for the Dolphins’ other rookies.

As expected, the Browns, who traded away their first-, second- and third-round picks, have the lowest rookie pool number, with just $1,789,980 available for rookies.

Teams have to fit all their rookies — including undrafted free agents or supplemental draft picks — in the rookie pool. Rookies’ salaries also count toward each team’s overall salary cap of $116 million.
