When Bears running back Cedric Benson claimed that he wasn’t drunk while boating and that he generally was mistreated by police who took him into custody over the weekend, we were reminded of the fact that every guy (and gal) sitting in a jail cell throughout the United States will insist that he (or she) didn’t do it.
But a passenger on Benson’s boat is backing up his version of the events.
Elizabeth Cartwright (CARTWRIGHT!) told the Chicago Tribune that, in her opinion, Benson wasn’t drunk. She also said that the police beat Benson up.
“I called my dad and told him, ‘Call 911, my black friend is getting beaten up by police on Lake Travis,” Cartwright said.
(As an aside, “my black friend”? Seriously? First of all, the detail is completely irrelevant. Second, it’s as if her goal is to at any given time have one, and only one, “black friend”.)
(UPDATE: After further review, the detail could have been relevant, if she believed that the police were targeting Benson due to his race. It still looks and feels odd to us that she would make that distinction.)
Cartwright also said that her fiance took “dozens” of photos that corroborate her claims.
The mere fact that all of this unfolded with multiple other people present (including Benson’s mother), and with at least of those people having a camera and using it, it’s hard for us to imagine that the police did anything improper.
Law enforcement at times isn’t pretty, and what a lay person interprets as the cops beating a guy up might in reality be nothing more than the police trying to get a situation under control.
They claim that they perceived Benson to be combative and insulting, and physically intimidating. And so they thought that they needed to use pepper spray in order to get the situation under control.
Of course, this doesn’t mean that the cops didn’t go too far. If Benson believes that his rights were violated, Benson has the right to pursue a legal action against the police. In the end, it might be the only way to get the truth out about what happened to Benson when he was busted over the weekend in Texas.

I guess you’ve never seen videos of police harrassment FROM THE COPS OWN DASH MOUNTED VIDEO CAMERAS, huh?
(You need to get out more. Or something. Seriously. Your logic is just flawed.)

it sounds even odder:
“Cartwright disputed that Benson was resisting arrest.
Panicked, Cartwright called her father, Jeff, to give him a description of the physical way she saw her friend being treated and told him to call 911.
Unaware the friend in question was Benson, Jeff Cartwright called 911 and told the dispatcher that police “were beating up a black kid on Lake Travis.” ”

that is one odd writeup.

Why would she call her father (7 to 10 digits plus waiting for him to answer) and ask HIM to call 9-1-1 instead of dialing it herself?

No, the funny part is that his boat has been stopped six times for inspections so far this spring. LCRA law enforcement are play cops. They patrol the lakes only.
Looks like boating while black will be the defense.

You know, the “my black friend” thing isn’t as bad as you make it seem.
She was obviously just trying to express that she thought it was an act of racism. It is funny that she called her dad to tell HIM to call 911 though.

What I want to know is, what the hell good is it going to do in calling 911 if the cops are beating your friend up? What, you want to send *more* cops to kick his ass? Not that I have any experience with it, but I’m pretty certain if fresh cops show up on the scene and they see a couple of cops pummeling a 210 lb brick house, they’re gonna think “he’s resisting arrest” and jump in to get their licks.

The crying is embarrassing. I don’t think any will ever live that down. He probably has lost respect from everyone in the league. I don’t think he knows it, but his career is over. The only thing that I’m concerned about is if he was actually pulled over six times by the Lower Colorado River Authority for a safety check. If that’s correct, everything else about this incident is irrelevant and the charges should be thrown out. I think he might have a good case for a lawsuit and someone from the River Authority should face disciplinary action.

The writer should leave his personal ignorances out of writing. Thats what good writers do.
If Benson doesn’t mind being “the black friend” then who are you to judge?
You people (the public) have some twisted views of reality, you think the world is exactly how “you” perceive it but guess what, it isn’t.

The lake rent-a-cops are a joke. They’re usually the guys who can’t even get onto a real police force and are part-time summer help that are not public servants but employees of the power company that owns the dam and lake. One of my high school friends back in the day got a job as lake patrol because his dad worked for the power company and hooked him up. His “training” was a primer on the lake rules and how to run the boat. While it might have changed in the last 20 years I can’t imagine it’s changed too much.
And while I don’t find it hard to believe Benson might have been drinking excessively, I definitley have no problem believing these guys might have over-reacted or been targeting Benson. If they have pulled him over multiple times, they knew who he was before they pulled him over this time. Also taking him out of view to perform his field sobriety tests seem suspicious as well.

Ok, I highly disagree with your statement that you doubt the police would do anything in front of an audiance. As someone else mentioned already, how many times have we witnessed police brutality caught on tape. I think there are many things wrong w/ you’re statement but I wont get into them, I think you’re intelligent enough to see some of the problems w/ that arguement.
Reading that article, and the police’s account of what transpired, I get the feeling that this is a typic police officer who’s may be a tad bit power hungry. “how dare this black guy question my authority” and he’s “intimidating” what NFL player isn’t black or white (excluding kickers and some qb’s. Come on this sounds like some BS to me. Maybe he was combative, but maybe that was b/c he was being harrased, mabye b/c this is not the first time this has happened to him, maybe its b/c the police were out of line. Who knows but thats just doesn’t justify pepper spraying and arresting someone.
AS for the girl calling her father instead of calling 911, I dont know what the heck she was thinking but the only thing I could think of is her cell phone is registered in another area. My phone is regiestered in MD and if I’m in DC or VA and I call 911 from my cell phone it calls the police in MD. I hope that was the reason or else thats just stupid.
“my black friend”… for some reason that reminds me of the Seinfeld episode when George is looking for a “black friend”

Okay…. so now that I’ve thought about it for a few minutes…. trying to look at it in a jovial way… “my black friend” does sound as if she is trying to tell her Daddy (in a guilty sounding sort of way) that “Don’t worry Daddy, we’re just friends. He isn’t my boyfriend or anything. “
