The arthroscopic knee surgery that Redskins receiver Antwaan Randle El underwent on Tuesday is being described by coach Jim Zorn as minor. Its impact on Randle El’s future with the team could be major.
Randle El will be sidelined for three-to-four weeks. On the surface, it doesn’t mean much, since the first game is still months away. But Randle El will be missing out on reps during key offseason workouts under rookie head coach Zorn, at a time when rookie receivers Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly are getting their feet wet.
Though the Redskins have a history of signing big-name players in free agency and dumping them not long thereafter, Randle El likely isn’t in jeopardy of getting cut in the short term, especially since his salary is only $605,000 in 2008. But his base pay shoots to $4 million next season, and if the owners don’t vote to extend the CBA through 2012, the Redskins might have to start shedding high-priced players in order to comply with the quirky rules of the last capped year in 2009.
And if Randle El’s absence aids the development of Thomas and Kelly, it would be much easier to make the decision to part ways with Antwaan come next March.

I wouldn’t be shocked if they cut him after this year. Especially at 4 Million, they have two young guys who especially look like they can make an impact. Keep in mind they drafted four WR for a reason…

He may be cut before next season, but his current absence allowing for a couple rookies to get more reps without pads isn’t that big of a deal. Mountains out of molehills.

He’s always been a bit fragile…
Speaking of the CBA, if the owner’s vote to leave it 2 years early, then 2009 becomes ‘the year before an uncapped year’ in the current CBA, instead of 2011. The killer for the Redskins is that, according to the CBA, in the year before an uncapped year, only 50% of any bonus can be moved into the subsequent years of a contract AND it can only be spread over 4 years regardless of the length of the contract. In the case of Randle El, they could convert 3 million of his salary to immediate bonus, but, instead of that counting less than 500,000 + the veteran minimum salary in 09 as it would under the old system, it would count roughly 1.5 million + the veteran minimum.
The Redskins have made a living by signing players to contracts with high salaries/bonus and converting that salary/bonus each year into bonus spread over the life of the contract via renegoitiation. Right now I think they have 100 million or so committed to 18 players for 2009 (and roughly 15-17 Free Agents to be). With the new rules, they won’t be able to convert that to bonus and move it out of the 2009 cap. It will be interesting to see how they handle it.

Randle El — another ex-Steeler who never did much once he left the team. (See: Alan Faneca, 2008.)
Great guy, though. Hope he recovers well.

“Randle El will be missing out on reps during key offseason workouts.”
My question is, “The Redskins last played on January 5, why did Randle El wait 4 months to get surgery done?” I’ve noticed this happens alot in the NFL and it makes me wonder if that was the earlier he could get an appointment.

Randle El set his alarm clock so he wouldn’t miss the surgery?
