The Oakland Raiders continue to round up any and all available players for the 2008 edition of their football team.
Per the AP, the Raiders have signed veteran linebacker Edgerton Hartwell.
But the Raiders could have had Hartwell at any time over the past nine months. He was cut by the Bengals prior to the 2007 season, and didn’t play at all last year.
Hartwell entered the league in 2001 and spent four seasons with the Ravens. He signed a big-money deal with the Falcons in 2005 as a free agent, and was released two seasons later. He joined the Bengals in May 2007.

I played some High school football. I need to get my agent to call the Raiders, I need to get PAID!

This guy must suck. Bengals cut him, they lose all their LB’s to Jail or injury and they DON’T sign him back. . . Must be one heck of an athlete. Leave it to the Raiders to sign him.

We went to watch the Bengals practice at training camp last year before Hartwell was realeased. He was the only player to stop and sign my son’s autograph-football. It made his day and continues to be a favorite memory of his.

DHall and now Hartwell. The Raiders are loading up on under-performing Falcons. I know Al Davis has lost his mind, but it’s moving from funny to sad.

The Broncos loaded up on past-it Browns a couple years ago and did ok that year.

DHall underperformed in Atlanta? What exactly did you expect out of him? Maybe you need to look at the article that describes the results of most 1st round picks. DHall is not an underachiever.
As for Hartwell, the Raiders have a glaring hole at strong-side LB. Signing a veteran for little $ that may help is not something for which to once again ridicule Davis’ sanity. That’s as old as Bengal jokes.

Hartwell was at one time thought of as a pretty decent LB, but got hurt a lot after leaving Baltimore and hasn’t done squat. It’s possible his rep was the result of playing next to Ray Lewis.

I fail to see how this is a bad move. They need help at LB and if he works out great. If not then he’s not going to make it past week 1. Why the criticism? They’ve had to rebuild the entire team since their old farts that Gruden brought in all decided to either retire or finally break down at the same time, the year after the Super Bowl. They’re trying to see who sticks. Can’t blame ‘em.

If this was a Shanahan move, or Snyder move, people would be calling it the smartest free agent signing in the history of mankind.

Linebackers that play alongside Ray Lewis = good. Linebackers who leave Ray Lewis = bad.
Hartwell was someone once, then he went to Atlanta.
Jamie Sharper was someone once, then he went to Houston.
Jury is still out on Adalius Thomas, who I really miss in Baltimore.

DHall is good, but not a shut down corner. Well, that’s what Steve Smith says anyway.
Hartwell was good at one time. But I do remember him being hurt a lot.

I think Hartwell’s knees are basically those of an 85 year old by now.
To the poster who said that the Raiders have a huge hole at strong side linebacker:
How often is the SAM backer on the field anyway? 30% of the time? Honestly the nickel corner plays more than the SAM on a modern field. Especially in the AFC West, where the tight ends that will be played (Gonzales, Gates, Scheffler) are usually going to draw a DB in coverage.

I don’t see it as a bad move either. He may work out great! If not, they’re not losing out very much.
