Thanks in large part to our friends at WIP and ESPN Radio in Philadelphia, we’ve developed a surprisingly large following in the City of Brotherly Love.
But there’s a certain host at WIP, a man named Howard Eskin, who doesn’t like us. Not one bit.
And that’s fine with me. Though I’ll admit to a few Costanza-esque tendencies, I shed long ago the desire to have everyone like me. (Besides, I’m a lawyer. At least half the people I deal with automatically are predisposed to hating me.)
We don’t listen to Eskin’s afternoon show on WIP, but our own Taco Bill (who lives in the Philly area) called me a few minutes after 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday to tell me that Eskin was ripping the site. Eskin does it from time to time; as I told Bill, as long as he gets the domain name right, Eskin can say whatever in the hell he wants.
But Bill also said that writer Buzz Bissinger, who might already be as famous for his anti-blog tirade from last week as he ever was for his award-winning writing, would be a guest on Eskin’s show. And so we called up the WIP site and listened to the show.
For more than two hours, Eskin teased Bissinger’s visit by touting Bissinger’s appearance from last week on Costas Now, during which Bissinger went ballistic on Deadspin’s Will Leitch. And since we know that Eskin has slammed us from time to time on the air, we figured that he’d use his visit with Bissinger as a way to get Buzz to throw a log onto the anti-PFT fire.
When the interview began, Bissinger promptly threw water on Eskin’s gushing regarding the HBO segment by acknowledging (as Bissinger has elsewhere) that his profane attack on Leitch crossed the line, and diluted his message. Eskin, despite previously stating that Bissinger’s segment on Costas Now was “sensational,” agreed with Bissinger’s assessment.
And then, as the discussion continued, Bissinger said that he’s done plenty of research over the past week regarding blogs, and that he has learned much about them. “ProFootballTalk is a good sports information blog,” Bissinger said, by way of example and without prompting from Eskin.
Of course, that prompted Eskin to roll out his pair of talking points about us — that we had Terry Bradshaw dead and Andy Reid resigned.
That’s it. That’s all Eskin’s got. And so we finally need to address those two points, once and for all.
As to Bradshaw, we acknowledge that we posted on January 25, 2007 that we’d heard a rumor from multiple sources that the Hall-of-Fame quarterback had died. We posted the rumor at 3:13 p.m. EDT. Thereafter, we promptly contacted one of our sources at FOX, we learned that Bradshaw is alive and well, and we posted that fact seven minutes later, at 3:20 p.m. EDT.
Though Eskin attributes the rumor solely to us, he doesn’t know (or conveniently has ignored) that the rumor was reported by two “real” media outlets in Shreveport, Louisiana: KTBS and KSLA. “One theory as to how the rumor got started,” said KTBS at the time, “was that a local radio station reported a wreck on the Terry Bradshaw Passway — part of the Inner Loop — and that was misunderstood to say Bradshaw had passed away.”
With that said, we seriously erred in posting the rumor before calling our contact at FOX. If we had done that, we could have written one story on the matter, which would have explained that there are rumors that Bradshaw had died, and that the rumors aren’t true. We learned a valuable lesson that day, and since then we have stayed away from any and all rumors relating to matters of life and death (such as, for example, the rampant rumors from one day last year that Pats linebacker Tedy Bruschi had kicked the bucket).
As to Reid, we reported on October 3 regarding the existence of rumors that he’d step down, possibly during the season. Later that same day, we posted the following from A.J. Daulerio (then of PhillyMag.com and now of Deadspin): “It’s been a constant rumor all year, but after Sunday night’s loss to the Giants, sources close to Andy Reid and the team say there’s a strong possibility Reid may get off the sidelines sooner than expected. All year, Reid’s family troubles have been taking a noticeable toll, and many of his players are biding their time until Big Red makes an announcement. With Marty Mornhinweg already assuming much of the offense, Reid’s a lame-duck coach at this point, just poking around on the sidelines to keep his mind off of his woes. The likely scenario is inserting Mornhinweg in the coach’s seat so Reid can ride out the rest of his contract as Executive Vice President of Football Operations, leaving him more time with his fractured family.”
Did Reid retire? No. Were there rumors he’d retire? Hell yes. Absolutely. Without question.
The irony of this is that, only thirty minutes before he was bashing sites like PFT for spewing without accountability rumor as fact, Eskin was engaged in some of the most irresponsible — and defamatory — rumor mongering we’ve ever heard.
Regarding the Marvin Harrison situation, Eskins had this to say: “I have heard many things about Marvin and I am shocked. I don’t want to get into it but it shocks me. I’ve heard too many things, I heard things which shocked me.
“I do know this,” Eskins added, “somebody he knows had $10,000 confiscated. He went back to the police station and said, that’s my money. . . . Two detectives have told me that. I don’t want to get into it any deeper. Doesn’t that present a lot of questions to you, too?
“I’ve heard things. You’d like not to believe the things you hear, because . . . he has been portrayed as a poster child of the NFL.”
Eskin provided no facts, no details, no substance. Instead, he hid behind “things he’s heard” and painted a very sinister portrait of a man who to date has never been charged with a crime.
How are those statements from Eskin any different from the worst of the stuff that bloggers post? Should Harrison justifiably be livid of this generalized assassination of his character and reputation by Eskin?
We welcome the comments and input of PFT Planet, especially those of you from our Philly chapter.

One other thing I just remembered. The whole King of Bling name he used to like. A short old white man that likes to wear “bling” and his fur coats. Every time I see the Seinfeld episode with Puddy and Jerry wearing the furs, I can’t help but laugh at Eskin.

Im not from Philly but a huge Philly sports fan and listen to WIP on the internet everyday. I really like listening to Morganti and Jones talk Flyers but Eskin can go to hell. Everytime he takes a call he acts like he doesnt have time for the callers and gets on their case about every little thing they say that doesnt agree with him. If someone in any other line of work treated their customers the way Eskin treats his callers than that person would be out of work very fast. He was almost rooting against the Flyers in the Habs series, mocking fans by saying their is a nhl conspirarcy against the Flyers. I just flat out hate him, hes a prick.

Eskins has made his money trash talking and will continue to do so. He has the false notion that he knows everything and whoever contradicts him is dead wrong. That he still has a show is amazing.

Attacking Eskin at the end makes you look immature, still. You cleared up your two missteps. Don’t talk about them again, EVER. Talking about them makes you look like that guy that refuses to learn that he should NEVER talk about ex girlfriends to ANY girl he is remotely interested in. They are your ex girlfriends and we are your crush.

Eskin is loser, and I’m kind of contradicting myself by writing this because the best way to deal with him is to just totally ignore him. He has made a living on getting people so agitated towards him that he stays in the public ear and eye. At the end of the day he’s really not worth anyone’s time.

Eskin is a joke. Talks tough on the radio, but if you ever saw him in real life you would laugh. He’s about 5′5, wears a fur coat and he looks like the King from the Burger King commercials.
No class either. I’m sure a lot of people already know this, but he sent flowers to a married women, who’s husband killed her a short time afterwards. Not all of the facts are clear so you can’t really blame Eskin but one thing is certain. He heard about the murder a day before it became public and went on the air that day like it was showtime as usual. The next day after the story came out with his name linked to it he was all “I feel so sorry” and “that poor girl”. The only thing he was sorry about is being exposed as a dirtbag.

Howard Eskin is an acerbic opinionated buffoon. He, of all people, should keep his mouth shut regarding matters involving publication of information. He was sued by Richard Sprague for remarks he made on the air. The case was settled. The settlement was confidential but Eskin made an apology on the air as part of the settlement. The suit is listed on the Court of Common Pleas of Philadelphia County website Civil Docket Report, and may be accessed through this link.

Eskin is a “dope” and a “moron” (as he likes to label his callers). His show is like the car wreck on the side of the road. You know it’s terrible, but you can’t help but look.
I am a devoted WIP listener, just as I am a devoted PFT reader. I love sports…but FOOTBALL so much more so than anything else. I listen to WIP whenever I am in my car.
Eskin, unfortunately, is the evening host on my way home from work. I always start there, but find myslef soon turning to one of the other sports radio offerrings now available in our area. After a long, grueling day at work, I need to wind down. But his show is all about conflict, tension, yelling, arguements. It’s horrible. Yet people continue to listen…as I still do as well if only for a short time. Perhaps it is just habit.
I have not read all the comments yet (wow…92 already and still counting) so perhaps this has already been touched on. But Eskin was sued for his false accusations about Iverson. He was suspended from the station for a month. And when he returned to the air he had to read an apology throughout his show for a given period of time as part of the settlement.
What a hypocrite.

don’t waste your time on Eskin - here’s the skinny on him: the hardest working guy in Philly sports - any medium. He goes to every game. But like many people who spend too much time doing one thing - he is so integrated in the ‘it’s all about me’ culture that it really is all about him. It’s who he knows, who he golfed with, how much weight he lost, where he buys his clothes”. He ingratiates himself with people and then from there is deadly loyal to them removing any possibility for objectivity. The other side of that peculiar short-coming is that if you ‘dis’ him in any way or if there is a silly petty reason that he doesn’t like you - nothing short of that athlete or personality kow-towing to him publicly will get you back in his good graces. He is silly and childish. There is a mean-spiritidness to him that is disgusting. The other side of that, again, is that he does many good things. I guess in the end, he’s just as human as the rest of us - a walking contradiction.

Howard is a forESKIN. Why doesn’t someone question this hypocrite. This Burger “king” constantly preaches against horse racing, especially after this kentucky derby death, because its “cruel to animals”…but then brags about his extensive FUR COAT collection! He should shave his were-wolf face and make a ‘fur’ scarf out of it, then hang himself with it.

Mike, I am from Philly and listen to WIP all day long, except for 3-7 when I swith over to WPEN and listen to Mike Missanelli. Eskin is a total tool and should be taken off the air for some of the things he says…oh wait a second, he was, when Allen Iverson sued him/WIP for defamation of character and won. Again, he’s a tool.
You should call in and challenge him on his opinions about your site. Don’t even tell him it’s you, tell him you are Mike from Roxbourough or something. Then call in as you, and watch him backtrack and kidd your ass. I’d tune in for that.
EagleEric, you don’t speak for me and you are as big a tool as Eskin.

Eskin knows what he is doing. He is not a stupid man. He tends to go against what he KNOWS Eagles fan think about the team because more people will call in and argue with him if he does so. It makes for a better radio show, which is the only thing he is after.
The Eagles use Eskin just as much as Eskin uses the Eagles. He gets to have conversations with everyone in the organization and then he goes and acts as a “non-biased” outlet for the team. OF COURSE, he is going to side with what the Eagles say. Do you think the Eagles would continue to give him special preference if he spent his four hours talking about how dumb the Eagles are with their transactions? He’ll always defend what the Eagles told him because he gets special treatment.
In the end, this is just show. Plain and simple.
People need to lay off Spadaro too. Do yourself a favor and go look at other NFL team’s websites. The Eagles website is near the top (if not THE top) as far as content and behind-the-scenes items. Spadaro and crew do a great job of representing the Eagles on the site. It’s like people expect him to be critical of the organization the same way people criticize them on their message boards. Why the hell would he do that? Do you think Reid would EVER give him another chance if he blasted him in one of his columns? Of course it is biased, but people forget he does a great job of getting the big picture as it relates to the Eagles. Lay off the guy already!

As a former guy who lived in Philly, rest assured that everyone hates Howard Eskin and considers him an arrogant moron. I wouldn’t say there is much pride in the fact that he’s been on WIP spreading the same proganda for years. I’m sure he’s proud that he’s been suspended several times for his politically incorrect comments and the fact that he has visited chat rooms where he talks to “ladies”.

Mike, Eskin is an arrogant clown who truly believes that his show is the greatest on all of broadcast radio. He can’t handle critcism at all, let alone accept anyone’s opinion who could God forbid slightly disagree with him. He never represents the fans of Philadelpia sports. Eskin broadcasts his show like it’s all about him. When sports talk radio should be about the players and the games themselves. What sports radio host brings up politics, fur coats, expensive watches, and how well he think he dresses? He probably is jealous of the credibilty/popularity/ and absolute love for the game football that this website and its daily viewers like me possess.

The morning show guys always talk well about profootballtalk.com. Angelo Cataldi and Rhea Hughes especially. Hope you don’t think bad about 610 WIP because of the Burger King himself Howard Eskin. The problem with Howard Eskin is he disrespects everyone who calls in. I don’t know how people listen to him but, he still has the 3-7pm primetime slot.
Spadaro on the other hand is nothing like Eskin, has promoted PFT and is very professional. He makes fans excited about Eagles football.
By the way, no cowboys fan should be aloud on your site, let alone respond to a question concerning Philadelphia. Get lost cowboys dw28mb3!!
