Thanks in large part to our friends at WIP and ESPN Radio in Philadelphia, we’ve developed a surprisingly large following in the City of Brotherly Love.
But there’s a certain host at WIP, a man named Howard Eskin, who doesn’t like us. Not one bit.
And that’s fine with me. Though I’ll admit to a few Costanza-esque tendencies, I shed long ago the desire to have everyone like me. (Besides, I’m a lawyer. At least half the people I deal with automatically are predisposed to hating me.)
We don’t listen to Eskin’s afternoon show on WIP, but our own Taco Bill (who lives in the Philly area) called me a few minutes after 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday to tell me that Eskin was ripping the site. Eskin does it from time to time; as I told Bill, as long as he gets the domain name right, Eskin can say whatever in the hell he wants.
But Bill also said that writer Buzz Bissinger, who might already be as famous for his anti-blog tirade from last week as he ever was for his award-winning writing, would be a guest on Eskin’s show. And so we called up the WIP site and listened to the show.
For more than two hours, Eskin teased Bissinger’s visit by touting Bissinger’s appearance from last week on Costas Now, during which Bissinger went ballistic on Deadspin’s Will Leitch. And since we know that Eskin has slammed us from time to time on the air, we figured that he’d use his visit with Bissinger as a way to get Buzz to throw a log onto the anti-PFT fire.
When the interview began, Bissinger promptly threw water on Eskin’s gushing regarding the HBO segment by acknowledging (as Bissinger has elsewhere) that his profane attack on Leitch crossed the line, and diluted his message. Eskin, despite previously stating that Bissinger’s segment on Costas Now was “sensational,” agreed with Bissinger’s assessment.
And then, as the discussion continued, Bissinger said that he’s done plenty of research over the past week regarding blogs, and that he has learned much about them. “ProFootballTalk is a good sports information blog,” Bissinger said, by way of example and without prompting from Eskin.
Of course, that prompted Eskin to roll out his pair of talking points about us — that we had Terry Bradshaw dead and Andy Reid resigned.
That’s it. That’s all Eskin’s got. And so we finally need to address those two points, once and for all.
As to Bradshaw, we acknowledge that we posted on January 25, 2007 that we’d heard a rumor from multiple sources that the Hall-of-Fame quarterback had died. We posted the rumor at 3:13 p.m. EDT. Thereafter, we promptly contacted one of our sources at FOX, we learned that Bradshaw is alive and well, and we posted that fact seven minutes later, at 3:20 p.m. EDT.
Though Eskin attributes the rumor solely to us, he doesn’t know (or conveniently has ignored) that the rumor was reported by two “real” media outlets in Shreveport, Louisiana: KTBS and KSLA. “One theory as to how the rumor got started,” said KTBS at the time, “was that a local radio station reported a wreck on the Terry Bradshaw Passway — part of the Inner Loop — and that was misunderstood to say Bradshaw had passed away.”
With that said, we seriously erred in posting the rumor before calling our contact at FOX. If we had done that, we could have written one story on the matter, which would have explained that there are rumors that Bradshaw had died, and that the rumors aren’t true. We learned a valuable lesson that day, and since then we have stayed away from any and all rumors relating to matters of life and death (such as, for example, the rampant rumors from one day last year that Pats linebacker Tedy Bruschi had kicked the bucket).
As to Reid, we reported on October 3 regarding the existence of rumors that he’d step down, possibly during the season. Later that same day, we posted the following from A.J. Daulerio (then of PhillyMag.com and now of Deadspin): “It’s been a constant rumor all year, but after Sunday night’s loss to the Giants, sources close to Andy Reid and the team say there’s a strong possibility Reid may get off the sidelines sooner than expected. All year, Reid’s family troubles have been taking a noticeable toll, and many of his players are biding their time until Big Red makes an announcement. With Marty Mornhinweg already assuming much of the offense, Reid’s a lame-duck coach at this point, just poking around on the sidelines to keep his mind off of his woes. The likely scenario is inserting Mornhinweg in the coach’s seat so Reid can ride out the rest of his contract as Executive Vice President of Football Operations, leaving him more time with his fractured family.”
Did Reid retire? No. Were there rumors he’d retire? Hell yes. Absolutely. Without question.
The irony of this is that, only thirty minutes before he was bashing sites like PFT for spewing without accountability rumor as fact, Eskin was engaged in some of the most irresponsible — and defamatory — rumor mongering we’ve ever heard.
Regarding the Marvin Harrison situation, Eskins had this to say: “I have heard many things about Marvin and I am shocked. I don’t want to get into it but it shocks me. I’ve heard too many things, I heard things which shocked me.
“I do know this,” Eskins added, “somebody he knows had $10,000 confiscated. He went back to the police station and said, that’s my money. . . . Two detectives have told me that. I don’t want to get into it any deeper. Doesn’t that present a lot of questions to you, too?
“I’ve heard things. You’d like not to believe the things you hear, because . . . he has been portrayed as a poster child of the NFL.”
Eskin provided no facts, no details, no substance. Instead, he hid behind “things he’s heard” and painted a very sinister portrait of a man who to date has never been charged with a crime.
How are those statements from Eskin any different from the worst of the stuff that bloggers post? Should Harrison justifiably be livid of this generalized assassination of his character and reputation by Eskin?
We welcome the comments and input of PFT Planet, especially those of you from our Philly chapter.

I don’t know if someone posted this yet, since theres a ton of comments on this post, but the video of him about to get his ass beat by Charlie Manuel is classic.
I’ve never been much of a 610 fan and could honestly care less about the Eagles (Steelers fan here) but it seems to me that Eskin is an asshole simply because what else could he be? If he wasn’t he would have no name for himself. So he may come off as arrogant on the air and full of himself and say things that aren’t completely accurate. But if he didn’t we wouldn’t be talking about him and have almost 100 comments on this. It is similar to early Howard Stern - you dislike him so much, but you listen. So really in the end his goal is accomplished.

Eskin doesn’t like you? Well Mike, you are in a large and distinguished club of people. He’s a clown and not worth your effort. He hates you because you occasionally do spots on his arch enemy’s show in the morning (frankly, Angelo Cataldi is an even bigger clown, but that’s another story). If you really want to put sand in Eskin’s ointment, spend as much time as possible on the air with Missenelli on 950 am.

Mike, if you really want to get nasty with this little Burger King-lookin’ twit, start calling him “TheKing610″ as often as possible.
Here’s a “real” media recap of the sordid tale behind that tidbit:

His producers use the delay to “dump” anyone who mentions it on the air with him.

I listen to WIP and Eskin everyday. Though he is often entertaining, he always gets facts wrong and is often wrong about very basic things like, are there really palm trees in Florida. I enjoy this site and dont understand why he is so opposed to blogs, and fantasy football at that. Please continue to slam him as it will make for entertaining sports talk radio.
Thanks

In July and August of 2002, I suggested on my radio show that attorney Richard Sprague had paid a witness in the Allen Iverson case to lie in court.I also suggested that Mr. Sprague said a lie-detector showed that another witness had lied. None of this is true. Mr. Sprague did not pay a witness to lie, and Mr. Sprague never said a witness failed a lie-detector test.In fact, I have known for some time that there was never any lie-detector test, but never said so on my radio show. I apoligize to Mr. Sprague and his family for making false statements that disparaged his reputation.I aploigize to my audience for making such statements about a pre-eminent member of our community.I also apologize for not correcting the record for over two years, and instead, doing so only after Mr.Sprague sued me.”
Word for word, The Burger King’s on air apology, followed by a 30 day suspension. Seems he didn’t have the FACTS and the Sprague lawyer team chewed him up and spit him out like the value menu burger he is….

the funny thing is how he suddenly, after disputing a pft report that wasn’t rosey regarding the eagles on his sunday night tv gig, had then and still is now turned into the andy reid bandwagon leader out of spite. there’s nothing objective about him. he’s turned himself into one of the childish andy reid fembots. everything the eagles do is great and any questioning of them is inherantly wrong or way overexaggerated. it’s all from deciding to pick a fight with pft. he backed himself into a corner on something he was wrong about, and has had to stick to his guns. that’s why he’s just aweful. he’s too spiteful to let it go so it’s laid out his whole course now. it’s pretty funny actually.

One of the most important items here, in my opinion, is that this man attacks expectations that do not exist for this site.
I visit often. I expect you to have stories early.
I expect you to have stories I haven’t heard of.
I expect you to have an opinion on said stories.
I do NOT expect you to always be correct.
Franky, I prefer that you are not sometimes. If you are willing to be wrong from time to time, we get much more information rolling through. This is a rumor mill, a place of rumbling and proffessional subterfuge. If I want complete accuracy I will wait three weeks and see the story on NFL.com.

“and painted a very sinister portrait of a man who to date has never been charged with a crime.”
Pretty different from you reporting that Pacman paid “hush money” and “paid $15,000 for a hit” on the same day. In fact, not even close. Pacman’s a bad, bad man that’s done a lot of bad things in his life… but that doesn’t make him a murderer, a conspirator to murder or someone who would tamper with a potential witness to three attempted murders.
“How are those statements from Eskin any different from the worst of the stuff that bloggers post?”
Because he didn’t come right out and accuse Harrison of committing a crime, unlike you did TWICE regarding the $15,000 payment that Pacman Jones allegedly paid to Arvin Edwards.

Recent reader, first time commenter.
In the 23 years that I have lived in the Delaware valley I have listened to approximately 30 minutes of Howard Eskin’s show. Howard Eskin is an ego maniac and a hypocrite who employs, “shock jock” radio tactics for the sake of ratings. He thinks that his opinion and speculation is credible due in part to the fact that he is a member of the, “mainstream” media.
Reporting that T.B stepped onto that great football field in the sky is a commonplace type of mishap. Misprints in obituaries happen all the time, and it was corrected within 7 minutes of being published. Furthermore, who didn’t believe that there was a good chance that Andy Reid was going to step down as head coach. I am sure that he may discussed that possibility with the organization, and family. However Eskin is assassinating Marvin Harrison’s character, and implies that he has heard all of these shocking stories about him. I don’t think that he established credibility of his sources to make statements that could imply a murder for hire situation.
Mr. Florio would you represent me, and anyone else in a class action lawsuit seeking monetary compensation for the time that he has stolen from so many of our lives?

Yes, Eskin is an idiot )check out Cataldi in the morning for even more idiocy). Everyone knows that. However, I find it funny that you are getting on his case because Harrison hasn’t been charged with a crime. You imply guilt in some of your write ups long before charges have been placed.
Matt Leinhart had a party at his house with some girls and a beer bong and you are calling for the police to get involved because of rumors on a Facebook/Myspace site. So it’s ok for you to act prematurely on questionable sources but it’s not ok for Eskin?

Eskin’s the same guy as Dale Hansen. Main difference being that Hansen is a self-serving prick that has a constant hardon for the Cowboys because he got FIRED by them ultimately for instigating a confrontation with Barry Switzer on a live show, which pissed the coaches and players off to the point that none of them would talk to him anymore. Then he said he was going to quit “after the season” so Jerry Jones fired him the next day. By the way, that’s basically how Jimmy Johnson’s relationship with the Cowboys ended. He said he wanted out of his contract after the 1994 season, Jones told him to quit now or commit long-term, and they came to a settlement.
I digress. Eskin is a self-serving prick that has a constant hardon for the Eagles, but in a different way because Reid and Banner stroke him constantly.

Ok I listen to 610 for probably an average an 8-10 hours a day. I am in no way a fan of Howard Eskin. But to say that this guy is nothing is absolutely inaccurate. He’s everything that you want in the media. He’s very controversial and has one of the highest rated sports shows on air in the country. That being said, I’m not a fan. But at least get your facts straight before you decide to rip him. He does get the inside scoop (See Ed Wade gets fired in Phillies miss playoffs) and there isn’t a media outlet that wouldn’t hire him in a second. But I still don’t like his show.

I listen to wip from 10 AM to 3 PM. I can’t take Eskin or the morning show. they both cater to the emotion of the non-fan, their opinions aren’t worth anything. They are the ‘mens radio’ portion of the radio station, not the ’sports radio’ portion. the reason why they are on during rush hours is because the station is going after more then just sportsfans at those time slots. it doesn’t take a genius to interview chicks for wingbowl or bash every non-caucasion player. they have nothing valuable to say.

Howard Eskin is not an idiot. He has become an extremely lazy “journalist”. His radio show consists of two types of calls. The a$$-kissers who are mindless idiots who agree with everything Eskin states (and want to hear themselves on radio) and those who disagree with Eskin - super-idiots (a large part of his following) and finally those that try to have an intellectually challenging discussion (the conversation never gets to that because “Coward” Eskin yells, interrupts, or is reduced to name-calling. Eskin at one time used to contribute some interesting analysis involving local sports teams - he has his lips planted firmly on Andy Reid’s butt however will only have negative things to say about the Sixers, Flyers, and Phils. He has become a joke. He may not last much longer in this market.

Eskin doesn’t know his stuff. He’s seriously less informed than half the people reading this. You can hear Howard say mind-blowingly stupid things on a daily basis.
Howard thought Winston Justice was a defensive lineman for about a year. He does no research whatsoever- he’s like the teacher who stays a chapter ahead of their class, but never read another book abotu the topic. Actually, Eskin’s always bragging that he “doesn’t read books”.
If you kept track of Howard’s false statements, you could make a list that goes to the moon and back. Eskin averages least one factual error an hour.

I live in Philly, and have to a lot of driving for my job, and often listen to WIP. The midday show is great, as you know. But then 3pm rolls around and you get this fool on the air. His job is to stir the pot, and unfortunately, he’s good at it. But his knowledge of sports in general is poor. He’s a parrot, repeating information he heard, but without substance and analysis behind it.
Here’s a tidbit about Eskin that fits right into his hypocritical persona- he will often give crap to athletes who hang around strip clubs and the like, yet he can often be found at Delilah’s Den on Spring Garden St. in Philly. A few years ago a client of mine ran a ad campaign on WIP that included a daily live read by Eskin. After meeting Eskin in person, he let me know that he sees Eskin all the time at that club, often multiple times per week (yes, my client spends a lot of time there). So much for keeping it real Howard.
As as for his relationship with the Eagles, I think his nickname should be “Andy Reid’s Right Hand Man”, given how often he strokes him.

Eskin is a Mini-Reid, aka “The King” and no body in the greater Philly area likes him. Some respect him because he has SOME inside connections, but nothing big. Garry Cobb has more sources than him, that is sad to say.
When anybody is right in an argument with him, he hangs up on them and then continues to yell like they are still on the phone. Then says something retarded like, “Of course he hung up, he knew I was right”.
Eskin is a straight up fur-coat wearing bum.
