Thanks in large part to our friends at WIP and ESPN Radio in Philadelphia, we’ve developed a surprisingly large following in the City of Brotherly Love.
But there’s a certain host at WIP, a man named Howard Eskin, who doesn’t like us. Not one bit.
And that’s fine with me. Though I’ll admit to a few Costanza-esque tendencies, I shed long ago the desire to have everyone like me. (Besides, I’m a lawyer. At least half the people I deal with automatically are predisposed to hating me.)
We don’t listen to Eskin’s afternoon show on WIP, but our own Taco Bill (who lives in the Philly area) called me a few minutes after 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday to tell me that Eskin was ripping the site. Eskin does it from time to time; as I told Bill, as long as he gets the domain name right, Eskin can say whatever in the hell he wants.
But Bill also said that writer Buzz Bissinger, who might already be as famous for his anti-blog tirade from last week as he ever was for his award-winning writing, would be a guest on Eskin’s show. And so we called up the WIP site and listened to the show.
For more than two hours, Eskin teased Bissinger’s visit by touting Bissinger’s appearance from last week on Costas Now, during which Bissinger went ballistic on Deadspin’s Will Leitch. And since we know that Eskin has slammed us from time to time on the air, we figured that he’d use his visit with Bissinger as a way to get Buzz to throw a log onto the anti-PFT fire.
When the interview began, Bissinger promptly threw water on Eskin’s gushing regarding the HBO segment by acknowledging (as Bissinger has elsewhere) that his profane attack on Leitch crossed the line, and diluted his message. Eskin, despite previously stating that Bissinger’s segment on Costas Now was “sensational,” agreed with Bissinger’s assessment.
And then, as the discussion continued, Bissinger said that he’s done plenty of research over the past week regarding blogs, and that he has learned much about them. “ProFootballTalk is a good sports information blog,” Bissinger said, by way of example and without prompting from Eskin.
Of course, that prompted Eskin to roll out his pair of talking points about us — that we had Terry Bradshaw dead and Andy Reid resigned.
That’s it. That’s all Eskin’s got. And so we finally need to address those two points, once and for all.
As to Bradshaw, we acknowledge that we posted on January 25, 2007 that we’d heard a rumor from multiple sources that the Hall-of-Fame quarterback had died. We posted the rumor at 3:13 p.m. EDT. Thereafter, we promptly contacted one of our sources at FOX, we learned that Bradshaw is alive and well, and we posted that fact seven minutes later, at 3:20 p.m. EDT.
Though Eskin attributes the rumor solely to us, he doesn’t know (or conveniently has ignored) that the rumor was reported by two “real” media outlets in Shreveport, Louisiana: KTBS and KSLA. “One theory as to how the rumor got started,” said KTBS at the time, “was that a local radio station reported a wreck on the Terry Bradshaw Passway — part of the Inner Loop — and that was misunderstood to say Bradshaw had passed away.”
With that said, we seriously erred in posting the rumor before calling our contact at FOX. If we had done that, we could have written one story on the matter, which would have explained that there are rumors that Bradshaw had died, and that the rumors aren’t true. We learned a valuable lesson that day, and since then we have stayed away from any and all rumors relating to matters of life and death (such as, for example, the rampant rumors from one day last year that Pats linebacker Tedy Bruschi had kicked the bucket).
As to Reid, we reported on October 3 regarding the existence of rumors that he’d step down, possibly during the season. Later that same day, we posted the following from A.J. Daulerio (then of PhillyMag.com and now of Deadspin): “It’s been a constant rumor all year, but after Sunday night’s loss to the Giants, sources close to Andy Reid and the team say there’s a strong possibility Reid may get off the sidelines sooner than expected. All year, Reid’s family troubles have been taking a noticeable toll, and many of his players are biding their time until Big Red makes an announcement. With Marty Mornhinweg already assuming much of the offense, Reid’s a lame-duck coach at this point, just poking around on the sidelines to keep his mind off of his woes. The likely scenario is inserting Mornhinweg in the coach’s seat so Reid can ride out the rest of his contract as Executive Vice President of Football Operations, leaving him more time with his fractured family.”
Did Reid retire? No. Were there rumors he’d retire? Hell yes. Absolutely. Without question.
The irony of this is that, only thirty minutes before he was bashing sites like PFT for spewing without accountability rumor as fact, Eskin was engaged in some of the most irresponsible — and defamatory — rumor mongering we’ve ever heard.
Regarding the Marvin Harrison situation, Eskins had this to say: “I have heard many things about Marvin and I am shocked. I don’t want to get into it but it shocks me. I’ve heard too many things, I heard things which shocked me.
“I do know this,” Eskins added, “somebody he knows had $10,000 confiscated. He went back to the police station and said, that’s my money. . . . Two detectives have told me that. I don’t want to get into it any deeper. Doesn’t that present a lot of questions to you, too?
“I’ve heard things. You’d like not to believe the things you hear, because . . . he has been portrayed as a poster child of the NFL.”
Eskin provided no facts, no details, no substance. Instead, he hid behind “things he’s heard” and painted a very sinister portrait of a man who to date has never been charged with a crime.
How are those statements from Eskin any different from the worst of the stuff that bloggers post? Should Harrison justifiably be livid of this generalized assassination of his character and reputation by Eskin?
We welcome the comments and input of PFT Planet, especially those of you from our Philly chapter.

Its quite obvious that Florio is a good lawyer and a great marketer. What are the odds that Eskin and Florio got together to give themselves this great advertising? There is no such thing as bad advertising. Before this piece, I never heard of Eskin. How many more hits is profootballtalk getting?
This article is drawing quite the responses.
Eskin and Florio - Geniuses in cahoots?

Howard Eskin is an affront to anyone who loves sports. He is a pompous self-righteous a-hole who lost his credibility long ago. In recent years he has been known for his elitist commercials pimping Rolex watches, fur coats, Lexus cars and other high price items that have no place on a sports radio program. He also has lost all objectivity with the Eagles as it seems he has been added to their payroll to make them look good despite any mistake. He’s essentially another David Spadaro on the subject. Think newspaper writers hired by the Corleone family to help out after Michael killed the cop. He’s also a terrible debater who often masks his deficiencies by yelling on the air. Most people in Philly hate him and rightfully so. I’m a die hard Philadelphia sports fan and I’d rather listen to the Oldies station than hear Howard’s pro-Eagle, elitist, and worthless sports dribble.

I am a Pats fan that used to live in Delaware and would listen to WIP. They had some pretty good, objective (as you can be for the home town) talk shows. Eskin was the exception. When a caller talked that didn’t agree with Eskin he launched into a tirade worse than Bill O’Reilly.
When out good friend Howard the Duck wasn’t “talking sports” he liked to through his hat into the political talk arena. I stopped listening to him when I realized I would rather listen to the Holloyweird folks talk politics then Howie. Only thing worse then an actor pretending to know the ins and out of politics is a half wit dumb ass who has a SPORTS show talking politics.

Eskin looks like the Wylie Coyote and Ive called in and told his crusty self that myself.
Let me preface this by saying I hate Eskin, even my mom cringes when she hears Eskins name and says “oh god, that man is disgusting”. But the only thing that I dont like about this “fued” is that there are going to be out of towners who read this site(best football site out there by the way) who are going to go to wip’s website and tune into Eskin and listen for a period of a few minutes or so. The last thing i want is for his ratings to get better especially when Mikey Mis is making so much headway trying to run Eskin out of the city.

Everyone in the WIP listening area knows the Burger King is just an extension of the Eagles PR firm. His main objective is to see how far he can get his head up Lurie/Banner/Reid’s ass. If you listen to his show, besides the juvenile name calling when someone disagrees, you will know he’s a sexist, racist and even the fellow hosts an IP seem to despise him. I remember a few years ago, when he was suspended for 30 days and had to give an on air apology to Allen Iverson’s attorney, Richard Sprague who had sued the station for defamation. Wonder why the Burger Queen didn’t mention that?…He’s an ass..

Eskin is an idiot. He has no morals (hence his situation of sending roses to a MARRIED woman who then gets murdered) and has no clue.
He’s a moron, an idiot, a dope.
I would listen to static on the radio than listen to Eskin. He attempts to make EVERYTHING about him. Anything that happens in Philadelphia sports somehow reverts back to him and something he did/knew/said etc. It’s pathetic. My assumption is that he wasn’t loved as a kid and is dying to be accepted.
He’s a sad, little man. Very little!

I grew up on Eskin, and always found his show to be very enjoyable. He does an amazing amount of charity work. But he’s gotten so lazy and complacent at his job, he’s been a joke for years. Every serious sports fan in the city knows this.
Nowadays, he’s all about ‘access’ and getting his ass kissed by ‘importnat people’. It renders him a hack, which I never saw coming. A lot like Mike Francesa in NYC.
If you come on Howard’s show and tell him how great he is, he’ll mindlessly reepeat you talking points. My favorite was “Mutombo has GREAT hands, Larry Brown told me so.” He has ZERO knowledge of most sports, his “shtick” is that highly placed players and GM’s give him “inside info”. Uh, Howard, they are just using your gullible and lazy ass to get their spin out there.
He also shifts his arguments based on the coaches he likes (or, like him I should say). He loves Andy Reid, saying a coach has little impact in the NFL when it comes to player performance on gameday. However, he kills Charlie Manuel for not getting more from the players. Uh, Howard, an MLB manager has the least impact…and NFL coach probably the most.
Great news is that ESPN Radio - for all its flaws - managed to get Mike Missenelli on at 4pm so that smart sports fans now have something to listen to.

I too am from Philly, bit I have to disagree with EagleEric. I don’t think we here in Philly love the King; I think his level of moronics is so honed and skilled that we can’t help listening to him. Many say he’s all talk, however I’ve met him on several occasions and I can confirm that he is in fact an arrogant chauvinistic pig (yes, I’m female). And being one of the few women in our fair city who has called into his show with actual sports knowledge, I can also tell you that his on-air arrogance is often equally proportionalte to the level of the callers’ knowledge, meaning if you’re making a legit point he’s more likely to hang up on you.
He’s all Philly and you can’t have him.
Also, the cursory E-A-G-L-E-S, EAGLES!

Im also from Philly - and a WVU grad - so I love this site for a few reasons. Ive been following it for a few years. Its great. Also, I cant stand howard. I barely listen anymore. His points are one sided and he never even considers the other side.. Especially his stance on the salary cap. I think sometimes he reads this blog and takes the counter opinion on purpose. The one thing he does great is interviews. The time T.O called up out of the blue from Dallas and they were arguing about who fractured their relationship was a classic. Totally off the cuff and amazing. Anyway, keep it up Mike. F Eskin.

I don’t think I can add anything new to the discussion here. I’m from Philly and for whatever reason I happened across Eskin just as he was brining on Buzz. I can’t begin to tell you how much I despise this man. WIP’s morning crew give Dave Spadaro crap all the time for his Eagles PR spin, but the Burger King is just as bad. I’m hoping Mikey Mis knocks him down a few pegs because nothing would be better than seeing Eskin go bye bye.

“The King”, as he likes to refer to himself, is an over-rated, contemptuous, conceited blowhard who only likes to hear himself speak. Maybe the real reason he bashes sites like PFT is that you get a hold of information (good/bad, right/wrong) before he can. And since he believes himself to be the be-all and end-all, that cannot happen in his little world.
His anti-blog, anti-internet bias is similar to those biases that the print media has against sports-talk radio. The immediacy of the information is perceived as a threat to their livelyhood.

Howard Eskin is not an idiot, although he does play one on WIP. His act makes him out to be as ass but, in fact very smart. If you ask Howard how much he makes he will tell you about 1MM a year. How does he do this, because he gets people to tune in WIP to do this he gets people to hate him? It’s that easy. It’s all a big act he loves when blogs like this one get people to talk about him, it’s all marketing and marketing makes Howard money. Howard seems to befriend a big time Philly sports personality. First it was Mike Schmidt, then Barkley, followed by Lindros and now Andy Read. He tried to get on the good side of Iverson but AI did not bite and Howard spent the next 8 or 9 years blasting away at him.
Over the years Howard has been in him brushes with the fans ask Jody Mac, he can tell you the story of his first night at WIP. Jody did a show subbing in for Howard at a local rib house and there was an armed guard to protect Howard. There were two fist fights that I can think of where Howard got his ass kicked. First, Dave Remington had to save him. The next week Buddy Ryan cut Remington. Some years later Howard was attacked by a big time defense attorney names Charles Peruto Jr. How about after doing 90 in a 45 zone on the way to a Flyers press conference he spent the next few weeks blasting cops in this small New Jersey town who gave him a ticket and later had is driving privilege revoked in New Jersey. Finley how could for get the story of Howard befriending a woman on the internet sending her flowers who was later killed by a jealous husband. Howard continues his just last year after calling Phillies Manager dumb and stupid for weeks Charlie Manuel invited Howard into his office for a little one on one time
So everybody Howard Eskin is a very smart idiot.

THE PHILLIES CAN DO NOTHING RIGHT THAT IS THE BASIS OF HIS SHOWS.

Looks like everyone agrees that Eskin is terrible. We like to say we are the best sports fans but people like him give us a bad name. He trashed AI who gave 110% heart every game and disgraces McNabb’s efforts on the football field. The only way a pompous fool such as Eskin can get ratings is by acting connected and making up ridiculous rumors.

It amazes me how many negative comments are posted about Eskin yet WIP still keeps him on the air. There must be a lot of people who support him. They must be the silent majority.
Keep up the ghood work!!!
