Thanks in large part to our friends at WIP and ESPN Radio in Philadelphia, we’ve developed a surprisingly large following in the City of Brotherly Love.
But there’s a certain host at WIP, a man named Howard Eskin, who doesn’t like us. Not one bit.
And that’s fine with me. Though I’ll admit to a few Costanza-esque tendencies, I shed long ago the desire to have everyone like me. (Besides, I’m a lawyer. At least half the people I deal with automatically are predisposed to hating me.)
We don’t listen to Eskin’s afternoon show on WIP, but our own Taco Bill (who lives in the Philly area) called me a few minutes after 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday to tell me that Eskin was ripping the site. Eskin does it from time to time; as I told Bill, as long as he gets the domain name right, Eskin can say whatever in the hell he wants.
But Bill also said that writer Buzz Bissinger, who might already be as famous for his anti-blog tirade from last week as he ever was for his award-winning writing, would be a guest on Eskin’s show. And so we called up the WIP site and listened to the show.
For more than two hours, Eskin teased Bissinger’s visit by touting Bissinger’s appearance from last week on Costas Now, during which Bissinger went ballistic on Deadspin’s Will Leitch. And since we know that Eskin has slammed us from time to time on the air, we figured that he’d use his visit with Bissinger as a way to get Buzz to throw a log onto the anti-PFT fire.
When the interview began, Bissinger promptly threw water on Eskin’s gushing regarding the HBO segment by acknowledging (as Bissinger has elsewhere) that his profane attack on Leitch crossed the line, and diluted his message. Eskin, despite previously stating that Bissinger’s segment on Costas Now was “sensational,” agreed with Bissinger’s assessment.
And then, as the discussion continued, Bissinger said that he’s done plenty of research over the past week regarding blogs, and that he has learned much about them. “ProFootballTalk is a good sports information blog,” Bissinger said, by way of example and without prompting from Eskin.
Of course, that prompted Eskin to roll out his pair of talking points about us — that we had Terry Bradshaw dead and Andy Reid resigned.
That’s it. That’s all Eskin’s got. And so we finally need to address those two points, once and for all.
As to Bradshaw, we acknowledge that we posted on January 25, 2007 that we’d heard a rumor from multiple sources that the Hall-of-Fame quarterback had died. We posted the rumor at 3:13 p.m. EDT. Thereafter, we promptly contacted one of our sources at FOX, we learned that Bradshaw is alive and well, and we posted that fact seven minutes later, at 3:20 p.m. EDT.
Though Eskin attributes the rumor solely to us, he doesn’t know (or conveniently has ignored) that the rumor was reported by two “real” media outlets in Shreveport, Louisiana: KTBS and KSLA. “One theory as to how the rumor got started,” said KTBS at the time, “was that a local radio station reported a wreck on the Terry Bradshaw Passway — part of the Inner Loop — and that was misunderstood to say Bradshaw had passed away.”
With that said, we seriously erred in posting the rumor before calling our contact at FOX. If we had done that, we could have written one story on the matter, which would have explained that there are rumors that Bradshaw had died, and that the rumors aren’t true. We learned a valuable lesson that day, and since then we have stayed away from any and all rumors relating to matters of life and death (such as, for example, the rampant rumors from one day last year that Pats linebacker Tedy Bruschi had kicked the bucket).
As to Reid, we reported on October 3 regarding the existence of rumors that he’d step down, possibly during the season. Later that same day, we posted the following from A.J. Daulerio (then of PhillyMag.com and now of Deadspin): “It’s been a constant rumor all year, but after Sunday night’s loss to the Giants, sources close to Andy Reid and the team say there’s a strong possibility Reid may get off the sidelines sooner than expected. All year, Reid’s family troubles have been taking a noticeable toll, and many of his players are biding their time until Big Red makes an announcement. With Marty Mornhinweg already assuming much of the offense, Reid’s a lame-duck coach at this point, just poking around on the sidelines to keep his mind off of his woes. The likely scenario is inserting Mornhinweg in the coach’s seat so Reid can ride out the rest of his contract as Executive Vice President of Football Operations, leaving him more time with his fractured family.”
Did Reid retire? No. Were there rumors he’d retire? Hell yes. Absolutely. Without question.
The irony of this is that, only thirty minutes before he was bashing sites like PFT for spewing without accountability rumor as fact, Eskin was engaged in some of the most irresponsible — and defamatory — rumor mongering we’ve ever heard.
Regarding the Marvin Harrison situation, Eskins had this to say: “I have heard many things about Marvin and I am shocked. I don’t want to get into it but it shocks me. I’ve heard too many things, I heard things which shocked me.
“I do know this,” Eskins added, “somebody he knows had $10,000 confiscated. He went back to the police station and said, that’s my money. . . . Two detectives have told me that. I don’t want to get into it any deeper. Doesn’t that present a lot of questions to you, too?
“I’ve heard things. You’d like not to believe the things you hear, because . . . he has been portrayed as a poster child of the NFL.”
Eskin provided no facts, no details, no substance. Instead, he hid behind “things he’s heard” and painted a very sinister portrait of a man who to date has never been charged with a crime.
How are those statements from Eskin any different from the worst of the stuff that bloggers post? Should Harrison justifiably be livid of this generalized assassination of his character and reputation by Eskin?
We welcome the comments and input of PFT Planet, especially those of you from our Philly chapter.

I couldn’t agree with you more. In general I love WIP. I no longer live in Philly but I still listen online regularly. Gargano and Cataldi are great. But Eskin (AKA the Burger King’s evil twin) is a grade A jackass. He has no real insight into anything. He has no skill at debate, he just talks over people then hangs up on them and berates them when they can no longer respond. And he thinks he’s God’s gift to sports journalism. And if you need further proof that he’s a douchebag, the fact that he has great affinity for fur coats should take care of that.

The Burger King is clueless. Forums/Blogs are all that talk radio is about now. Andy Reid will be the head coach of a playoff team this year and Eskin will slip one more AM station towards oblivion.
He isn’t worth the mention. Give us Philadelphia fans a WR rumor as penance.

I just want to hear the media mea culpa regarding Harrison’s gun.
First it was a custom-made .50 caliber handcannon. Now it’s a relatively standard 5.7mm that anyone can buy. (Don’t believe me? I own one. Visit your local gun store and you can too. There is nothing ‘custom’ or ‘blackmarket’ about this firearm.) So I’d like to see a correction regarding the initial hyperbole of Harrison’s weapon. Especially if those writing about this subject want to be taken seriously when they continue to do so.
Of course, there’s still that ‘48 layers of kevlar’ nonsense….

Come on, Florio! We all know this “blog” thing is just a fad. AM Radio is where people go to find their news and information. The kids LOVE AM Radio.

There is a reason Eskin is only a local radio guy in relatively parochial market like Philly. I’ve listened to him in the past and he’s just not very polished. He tends to play the I’m “a regular guy” card a little too hard and rely on his “gut” instead of analysis.
He wouldn’t make it in more cosmopolitan or professional cities like LA or Atlanta. He’d come off as a rube.

Over the years, fans here in Philly have been pretty divided over Howard. Some people like him, but the people who dislike him…well, let’s just say they REALLY dislike him. Years ago, he and (then Eagles fullback) Kevin Turner had a weekly radio show from the bar I worked at, and I have to say, I found him to be a pretty nice guy away from the microphone and in person. That said, I think that a lot of what Howard says is shtick. And that shtick is largely based on spewing venom. He says stuff to get a rise out of people and he picks certain targets to demonize. That’s his thing. Why he continues to harp on PFT, I don’t know. No one who reads this site with any regularity really needed today’s clarification, but then again, Howard doesn’t really care about that. All he cares about is having something or someone to rail against on his show…

eskin is a piece of youknowwhat. he’s reactionary, vindictive, and plays right into the stereotypical perception of a philadelphia sports fan. as a lifelong, diehard eagles fan, i claim no responsibility for howard eskin, have never listened to his show and never will as long as i can help it. you pointed out how hypocritical he is, all within the span of one show. anyone who follows the eagles, or any philly team, and knows what they’re talking about doesn’t believe a word of what eskin says.

There’s a reason your spot is called the Rumour Mill and you are usually pretty careful to make it clear what is fact and what is rumour.
Having said that you do appear to be very harsh on the Eagles in a way that you aren’t about everyone else so it’s no surprise some in Philly don’t like you.
I still visit several times a day tough

You can now add blogs to the very long list of subjects that Eskin knows nothing about. As everyone from Philly knows, first on that list is sports. He is the main driver for the success of ESPN 950 (the “other” sports radio station).

I moved to NC from Philly. Eskin was a good reason to get out of town. He’s a dick, and a figment of his own imagination. He proclaims to be the “King of Sports Radio”. Frankly he isn’t the King of the station for which he works. There are other more popular shows.
If the topic ever comes up, ask how he enjoyed his 2 week sabbatical for falsely reporting the AI arrest a few years back. He’s been in plenty of hot water for the mis-information.

Typical radio guy: “Those bloggers will never catch on.
We free radio jocks will be here as long as the phonograph.
Sirius-ly!”
Sounds like someone is a little touchy about a new medium
taking over where radio formerly ruled. The very nature
of a blog is that there will be mistakes at time due to the
immediate nature of the medium. It is sites like this one
that admit mistakes and commit to minimize them that set
an example for the entire blogging world. Keep up the great work.

As far as this site goes, ya screw up every now and then, but who doesn’t. And I get info here much quicker than nfl.com. I can’t even tell you the last time I was there.

Philly planet checking in. Very well said Florio. I don’t hate Eskin, the way many people do here, and he’s been around WIP for what seems like 20 years for a reason. He’s good. Good at riling people up and good at getting people that “hate” him to listen. But he’s certainly agenda driven and for whatever, your site is now on the agenda. Perhaps it’s that you don’t kiss Andy Reid’s ring, I don’t know, but it doesn’t take a genius to understand his attempts at discrediting you yesterday (I was listening). His rant yesterday was all opinion, which is fine, but as usual, he didn’t really back up his criticism with much substance, more of just his pompous, I’m right, you’re a moron, this is the way it is schtick. I, for one, like rumors, and even though some don’t pan out, I’m fully able to read pieces that you post and accept them for what they are, things that may or may not pan out. OK, this is a novel, I’m done here.

Eskin is an idiot. He talks down to the idea of blog sites, and yet he spins his own ideas (or the ideas of the Eagles and Dave Spin-daro) and tries to put up some radio show that he is able to belittle the callers if they don’t agree with him 100%. He always comments that he has “the facts” and he “keeps it real”, but he fails miserably when it comes to accepting the idea that other media outlets can, and often do, get the facts before he does. I care more about getting legitimate discussion and different ideas to be thrown back and forth in a 4 hour show and less about his feelings on blogs and how minuscule they are in the field of sports journalism.

I’m by no means an Eskin fan, but in my opinion, he’s a pretty solid radio guy in Philadelphia. The guy’s been on the air as long as I can remember, and whether people love him or hate him, he’s always got lively discussion going.
As to his grudge against PFT, he may have a point, seeing as it gives Eagles fans like myself false hope about trades that have no real shot of happening. How many different WR’s has PFT linked the Eagles to this offseason? Moss, Fitzgerald, R. Williams, Boldin, Michael Clayton, Ocho Cinco…none of these came true, and if I was a radio host getting pelted with calls from people reading these rumors and assuming it was true, I’d be fed up with PFT as well.
So basically, get off your high horse. I’d say you’re wrong more often than you’re right on this site. If Eskin doesn’t like you because you post false items, I’d say he might have a point.

Eskin is ridiculous. He’s the same guy who proudly wears a U of Miami Championship Ring… and has no affiliation with them at all! He’s the same guy who was a previous Dallas Cowboys fan, and now calls them “cockroaches”. Finally, when you want to discuss rumors, its funny how he was suspended for 30 days for lying on the air accusing Allen Iverson’s lawyer of paying off witnesses.

This is a post that reminds me of one of the main reasons why I read ProFootballTalk.
I appreciate Florio’s ability to self assess… and self reflect, admit when PFT got it wrong, and put it all into perspective. I’m not a talk radio listener because there is an absence of such humility in that medium.
I’ll admit that there are things about PFT that make me cringe… I feel like PFT needs to come to terms with the fact that it is a part of the ‘real media’… all blogs are… especially blogs with ad revenue. I get annoyed with the People Magazine/gossipy aspect of NFL coverage that I see on this site and other NFL blogs (Who cares what Lienart, Quinn, Moss, Romo, and Owens do in their free time).
But PFT realizes that the real story lies beyond what the NFL, player agents, and tenured reporters are publishing/reporting… and that a large part of the story lies in the strategies that they employ in communicating with us, and often in what they’re not publishing/reporting. In that sense, PFT is the future of media and NFL coverage.
Keep up the good work guys and don’t let these yokel’s get to riled up.
