Thanks in large part to our friends at WIP and ESPN Radio in Philadelphia, we’ve developed a surprisingly large following in the City of Brotherly Love.
But there’s a certain host at WIP, a man named Howard Eskin, who doesn’t like us. Not one bit.
And that’s fine with me. Though I’ll admit to a few Costanza-esque tendencies, I shed long ago the desire to have everyone like me. (Besides, I’m a lawyer. At least half the people I deal with automatically are predisposed to hating me.)
We don’t listen to Eskin’s afternoon show on WIP, but our own Taco Bill (who lives in the Philly area) called me a few minutes after 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday to tell me that Eskin was ripping the site. Eskin does it from time to time; as I told Bill, as long as he gets the domain name right, Eskin can say whatever in the hell he wants.
But Bill also said that writer Buzz Bissinger, who might already be as famous for his anti-blog tirade from last week as he ever was for his award-winning writing, would be a guest on Eskin’s show. And so we called up the WIP site and listened to the show.
For more than two hours, Eskin teased Bissinger’s visit by touting Bissinger’s appearance from last week on Costas Now, during which Bissinger went ballistic on Deadspin’s Will Leitch. And since we know that Eskin has slammed us from time to time on the air, we figured that he’d use his visit with Bissinger as a way to get Buzz to throw a log onto the anti-PFT fire.
When the interview began, Bissinger promptly threw water on Eskin’s gushing regarding the HBO segment by acknowledging (as Bissinger has elsewhere) that his profane attack on Leitch crossed the line, and diluted his message. Eskin, despite previously stating that Bissinger’s segment on Costas Now was “sensational,” agreed with Bissinger’s assessment.
And then, as the discussion continued, Bissinger said that he’s done plenty of research over the past week regarding blogs, and that he has learned much about them. “ProFootballTalk is a good sports information blog,” Bissinger said, by way of example and without prompting from Eskin.
Of course, that prompted Eskin to roll out his pair of talking points about us — that we had Terry Bradshaw dead and Andy Reid resigned.
That’s it. That’s all Eskin’s got. And so we finally need to address those two points, once and for all.
As to Bradshaw, we acknowledge that we posted on January 25, 2007 that we’d heard a rumor from multiple sources that the Hall-of-Fame quarterback had died. We posted the rumor at 3:13 p.m. EDT. Thereafter, we promptly contacted one of our sources at FOX, we learned that Bradshaw is alive and well, and we posted that fact seven minutes later, at 3:20 p.m. EDT.
Though Eskin attributes the rumor solely to us, he doesn’t know (or conveniently has ignored) that the rumor was reported by two “real” media outlets in Shreveport, Louisiana: KTBS and KSLA. “One theory as to how the rumor got started,” said KTBS at the time, “was that a local radio station reported a wreck on the Terry Bradshaw Passway — part of the Inner Loop — and that was misunderstood to say Bradshaw had passed away.”
With that said, we seriously erred in posting the rumor before calling our contact at FOX. If we had done that, we could have written one story on the matter, which would have explained that there are rumors that Bradshaw had died, and that the rumors aren’t true. We learned a valuable lesson that day, and since then we have stayed away from any and all rumors relating to matters of life and death (such as, for example, the rampant rumors from one day last year that Pats linebacker Tedy Bruschi had kicked the bucket).
As to Reid, we reported on October 3 regarding the existence of rumors that he’d step down, possibly during the season. Later that same day, we posted the following from A.J. Daulerio (then of PhillyMag.com and now of Deadspin): “It’s been a constant rumor all year, but after Sunday night’s loss to the Giants, sources close to Andy Reid and the team say there’s a strong possibility Reid may get off the sidelines sooner than expected. All year, Reid’s family troubles have been taking a noticeable toll, and many of his players are biding their time until Big Red makes an announcement. With Marty Mornhinweg already assuming much of the offense, Reid’s a lame-duck coach at this point, just poking around on the sidelines to keep his mind off of his woes. The likely scenario is inserting Mornhinweg in the coach’s seat so Reid can ride out the rest of his contract as Executive Vice President of Football Operations, leaving him more time with his fractured family.”
Did Reid retire? No. Were there rumors he’d retire? Hell yes. Absolutely. Without question.
The irony of this is that, only thirty minutes before he was bashing sites like PFT for spewing without accountability rumor as fact, Eskin was engaged in some of the most irresponsible — and defamatory — rumor mongering we’ve ever heard.
Regarding the Marvin Harrison situation, Eskins had this to say: “I have heard many things about Marvin and I am shocked. I don’t want to get into it but it shocks me. I’ve heard too many things, I heard things which shocked me.
“I do know this,” Eskins added, “somebody he knows had $10,000 confiscated. He went back to the police station and said, that’s my money. . . . Two detectives have told me that. I don’t want to get into it any deeper. Doesn’t that present a lot of questions to you, too?
“I’ve heard things. You’d like not to believe the things you hear, because . . . he has been portrayed as a poster child of the NFL.”
Eskin provided no facts, no details, no substance. Instead, he hid behind “things he’s heard” and painted a very sinister portrait of a man who to date has never been charged with a crime.
How are those statements from Eskin any different from the worst of the stuff that bloggers post? Should Harrison justifiably be livid of this generalized assassination of his character and reputation by Eskin?
We welcome the comments and input of PFT Planet, especially those of you from our Philly chapter.

Cosidering ESPN published an expose on Matt Walsh quoting him about the Patriots and in particular Ernie Adams insinuating that the Patriots committed all these horrible crimes of cheating without even knowing what Walsh had and the Boston Herald posted an unsubstantiated rumor of a Rams walkthrough being taped, why would you be surprised that a writer of a blog would try to achieve a higher journalistic standard. We are in the age of the media getting it published first, not right.
Much of the stuff Eskin is illuding to may actually be true, but it doesn’t shock me of the rumor mongering style of reporting it.

Oh I see your problem you listen to WIP. Don’t do that. Seriously.
I don’t begrudge you posting rumors that are circulating. I have a problem when you read your own little theories into every little story no matter how remote.
Last year you were banging the drum that they were going to trade McNabb. Now you’re banging the drum that they’re still going to trade Lito when the likelyhood of getting anything to help the team now is extremely thin. They have 2 first next year so more picks is a pretty pointless proposition. It’s not like Lito is TO and is going to destroy the locker room. Keeping him isn’t a bad idea.

Eskin is an ass, an idiot, a bilious fool - and an obnoxious, duplicitous, transparently self-promoting putz. Not to mention a shameless rumor-monger. If he had much more class (and a much, much bigger audience), he’d be the Howard Stern of sports “reporters.” Those are the NICE things I have to say about him.
(Full disclosure - I moved away from PA a few years ago and didn’t hear the show you write about, but a leopard doesn’t change his spots. Howie was probably pointing his snot-laden finger at PFT to distract his gullible [he hopes] audience from his own many, many, many blown calls.)

I’m a PFT fan who hails from the Philadelphia area and I would like to state that I would much rather get my NFL news from PFT than Howard Eskin. Eskin is the most vilified sports broadcaster in the Delaware Valley who is also dearly in love with himself. He has such a combative personality that many people have grown to hate and the condescending manner he employs when speaking to his callers is just plain annoying. His ability to annoy is strengthened ten-fold when he is seen on NBC 10 in the evenings. He flails around the studio like a bearded hobbit while always disparaging a Philly win with his pessimistic attitude.

I’m not from Philly, but I am in Delaware and I LOVE listening to 610 WIP. Specifically, Glen Macnow or G Cobb. Anyone who listens to Howard is either an idiot (for liking him) or is forced to do so because it’s “drive time”. All the man does is degrade callers. He just has a mindset where anyone calling to talk to him is dumber than he is, and consequentially, he’ll use terms like “Hey Chief” and “Hey Genious”. You listen to the show for 10 minutes, and this will inevitability happen. He always says to female callers, “What’s for dinner?” and “Get back in the kitchen”. He’s not even funny. It would be one thing if he were funny like Howard Stern, but he’s not. The only good thing about listening to him is that he does like the Eagles, and because of his undying support for the organization, he gets good information when it actually comes from the team. Just so I don’t leave with a nice thing written about the guy who used to do the Burger King sponsored NFL commercials as “The King” (you should laugh about this if you’ve seen Howard’s face before… look ‘em up on Youtube), the only reason someone like me listens to him is because… what else am I going to turn on during my drive home from work? It’s Howard or nothing basically. Everyone I know feels the same way. Just because he has more listeners than anyone else on the station doesn’t mean that he is the best. It means his show comes on at the best time… the drive home from work. Give me Glen Macnow any day!

The stories are never fabrications, they have all have logical starting points. The best part is that the story still exists in your archives. It has not mysteriously disappeared or goes unrecognized by you. It was reported, it was found incorrect, you manned up with a quick explanation and apology. As much as the Philly radio host would like it to be an issue, it’s a non-issue in this reader’s mind

Very well written, Mike. How can someone bash two headlines out of thousands and thousands of things you had right?
You have been one of the most accurate “reporters” of the last 4 years. You may not always have it first (though you often do), but normally when you report smoke, fire follows. So what if you f it up sometimes. I wish I had your track record! I will never forget you calling Saban leaving Miami for Alabama WEEKS before ANYONE else would dare say it.
Thanks for a great site that I have enjoyed immensely and learned more from than from any newspaper (especially the cap/contract/CBA info and legal perspective), and thanks for the great humor (sometimes). You have truly brought a year-round new dimension of enjoyment to the NFL and the NFL and it’s fan community are better off with your contribution. And you keep the media honest.
Thanks again. I will always be here hitting refresh til the day I die, or at least til you die since you have some years on me…
Let people say whatever they want. PFT planet loves you Mike and I for one would really feel like something was missing in my life if PFT disappeared. We have your back.

I live in Philly and I am not ashamed to say that I love Howard Eskin. He can be an ass a lot but frankly, the guy knows what hes talking about and 8/10 the things he says is usually right. I do not understand why he has a problem with PFT I think this is a great site and I check it multiple times a day. Howard does not like to hear or aknowledge any rumors that have little or no substance which is reasonable but that is not what PFT is so I do not understand his beef.

Let me just say this, Most of your info is pretty good when you are right/truthful, but there are other times that you do not look into situations and post inaccurate dribble. For instance, You said Mike Patterson is a Bust with no substance (I guess similar to Eskin). You were ridiculed to no end until you retracted that statement with your dry, cynical, sarcastic, satire Update saying, “Well, I guess he’s not a TOTAL BUST.” WHA?!?!? Um, all you had to do was just look at his stats and understand that Patterson never in his career has come remotely close to being a bust, as recent as last season he actually led all DT in tackles, and was a PRO-BOWL Alternate!!! Then you still give him a backhanded compliment today by saying and I quote “31. Mike Patterson, defensive tackle, Eagles: The Philly chapter of PFT Planet will revolt if we were to call Patterson a bust. Not a bust.” How about you explain why he’s not a bust like you did for the other 11 teams. You seem to salivate at any negative situation and put down any team or player with your dry cynical satire. I’m just saying maybe you shouldn’t throw as many rocks when you live in a glass house.

Eskin is such a blowhard who changes opinions on stories depending on what benefits him. He bashes everyone except for the Eagles Organization so he can continue to receive “scoops” from the inside. He is offensive to most of the audience, commonly changing his tone when speaking with people of other ethnicities and women. WIP should have fired him many years ago, and why they continue to allow their station to be his soap box is beyond me. I refuse to tune into WIP between 3 and 7, thank god ESPN Radio is available in the market.

Ok Florio… here is the deal. I am part of PFT Planet Philadelphia… (Philly born and bred)
You post rumors. You post things like “Hey we heard this… we’re not sure if it’s true but take it for what it’s worth.” However, people in Philadelphia are stupid. They think you are writing “We heard this so it MUST be true”, when in reality, you just report what you hear. All in all, this is a fantastic site with great information. I read it everyday. While I would like to read mores tuff about football, it’s one of the best sites on the net.
That being said, Eskin is a good journalist with solid sources, but he’s still from Philadelphia. We know this. Eskin doesn’t understand reading comprehension. He’s very pro Eagles organization and won’t listen to anyone else.
However… you have made one SERIOUS transgression against Philadelphia and therefore we are predisposed to hate you. You continue to call Mike Patterson a bust. We LOVE Mike Patterson. That guy should be a Pro Bowler. Because of that, your credibility is in question.

As a Philly native and long time listener (first time caller), I can tell you that Eskin has ALWAYS spoken out of both sides of his mouth.
He starts the show arguing one point, and when/if PROVEN wrong, and called on it by a caller, he states “That’s not what I said you moron!” and proceeds to argue the exact opposite point from his original statement.
Eskin is a Moron. Keep on bashing the fur wearer! Spread the word that the BK king is full of BS.

I listen to the mid day guys on WIP almost everyday and usually catch the crossover with eskin for a few minutes until I tune out as he seems to get payed more by the eagle front office then website of geek dave spadero. Eskin usually never backs up his facts, yet continues to bash PFT for not having any credibility. he’s a slimey 4 foot tall midget who knows nothing about the westcoast offence, Charlie manuel, or even politics yet continues to hold the most popular time slot on WIP. Howard has his head so far up hilary’s rear end he forgets that the majority of the WIP listeners want to listen to sports on sports talk radio. Why doesn’t WIP listen to their fans and axe this has ben.

Howard Eskin is a turd. I used to live in Philly before moving to the left coast and I called into Eskin’s show on two occasions. The guy is a jerk who refuses to listen to opinions that differ from his own, or facts that differ from his “facts”. All in all, if you are on the bad side of Howard “the turd” Eskin, you are on the right side by me. Eskin “the turd” doesn’t like you for two simple reasons. Firstly, he doesn’t like you because you are a lawyer. He despises lawyers despite the fact that he has utilized their services from time to time. Secondly, he doesn’t like you because you have more and better sources about the NFL than he does. It just burns him up that somebody else, especially a lawyer from WEST VIRGINIA, can know more about the NFL than he does. Howard Eskin should be the new Len Pastabelly! Let’s call him Howard “Irksome”. That should burn him up!
