As promised (sort of), we’ve finished our look at the players taken in round one of the 2005 draft.

The finally tally? Of the 32 players, 15 are busts.

It’s hard to argue that Alex Smith isn’t a bust, but the 49ers have hardly put him in a position to thrive. That said, 2008 is it for Smith and maybe Nolan. No more excuses with improved WR’s and Martz.

To say that Campbell is not a bust, and Alex Smith is is kinda unfair.
Campbell in 2006 had a 76.5 qb rating. Smith the same year had a 74.8. Smith has been hurt or under new managment his ENTIRE CAREER. He managed to survive and even do moderately well in 2006. It would be unfair to judge him by 2007. Campbell had the same OC, essentially the same team, and a much higher level of talent surrounding him. I still say you can put Tom Brady on the 9ers and he produces just as little. Not only that, but with a less talented cast of recievers, Smith threw for 16 tds in 2006 to Campbells 10. And if you remember correctly, Campbell fumbled 13 times and threw 11 ints in 2007. Smith hasn’t been great, or even good, but Campbell is way overhyped. There is no evidence to say Campbell will be better than Smith. The REDSKINS may be better than the 49ers, but that’s a different thing entirely.

Heath Miller is good and all, but the only Steeler TE that was ever worth a 1st round pick was Eric Green. It’s almost never worth spending a 1st on a TE — sorry Jets fans.

So either Florio is a blind homer Skins fan, or he was drinking again when he wrote this….
12 Td’s - 11 int’s - 12 sacks - 13 fum (8 lost) - and 2700 yards, and that qualifies as on the way to becoming one of the better signal starters in the conference??
Yeah, maybe if Manning, McNabb, Romo all retire or get traded to the AFC. And that’s just in the same division.
Campbell is somewhere between Alex Smith and Aaron Rodgers, which means the jury is still out on him.

So, Campbell is on his way to becoming a solid starter, and he’s not a bust. But Patterson has been a solid starter for 3 years, and the only reason you give for him not being a bust is to appease Eagles fans?
How about Patterson clearly not a bust, and the jury is still out on Campbell?
Campbell couldn’t beat out Mark Brunell (with a bum shoulder). Then, when he finally gets to start, he goes down and the Offense looks better under journeyman QB Todd Collins.
I used to think you were a Steelers fan Florio, but now I wonder if you aren’t a ‘Skins homer.

Are you serious? Heath Mill isn’t going to be the next Gates or Gonzales but he could definitely be the next Todd Heap. Don’t forget it was practically a 2nd round pick anyway.
Tight End was a big need at the time, and I’d say Heath’s toughness and clutch factor is 2nd on the team only to Hines Ward.

I think it’s harsh to call Marcus Spears a bust. He plays a very unglorious position as a DE in the 3-4. His job is to clog up space and stop the run, which no one can deny he does. Not only that, it’s hard for a guy to pile up sacks when he isn’t used in passing situations. Sacks are probably the most overrated statistic in football. Just because someone plays the defensive line, and isn’t a sack machine, doesn’t justify them being classified a bust.

At least you got it right this time around with Patterson, but how bout you explain why Patterson’s not a bust. I guess you can’t give too much respect were it’s due… How bout you tell it like it is, Paterson is a top ten DT in the NFL and an PRO BOWL ALTERNATE!!!

This article got a nice boost on the Sports Junkies in the morning on WJFK in D.C.
As a Browns Fan, I like that Savage went against what a lot of people though we should do and went with Edwards. It is crazy to see what a gamble Round 1 is, especially at the top end. The NFL has to do something about rookie salaries. The players would go for slotting/a cap if it limited the contracts to three or four years without hesitation.
A problem is not talked abuot as much is that it makes it hard for bad teams to really climb out if they have to invest so much of their cap in an individual, unproven player in the draft. The Browns were an example of this… a very bad initial front-office (Dwight Clark is a douche) burried the team with no talent but huge cash outlays in too many players. The problem just creates a viscious cycle where the team invests so much in one or two bad players that the team can’t dig out of it.

you are the ultimate skins homer. Jason Campbell had 12 touchdown passes last season and had 19 turnovers (11 interceptions) yet you say that he should become one of the best QB’s in the NFC? Todd Collins took them to the playoffs and started over a healthy Campbell in the playoffs.
