With the Chiefs using zero of their 12 draft picks on quarterbacks, many presumed that Brodie Croyle would continue as the starter, at least for 2008.
Enter Tyler Thigpen.
Thigpen, a seventh-round pick of the Vikings in 2007 whom coach Brad Childress thought he could slip through waivers and sign to the practice squad before the Chiefs pounced, could challenge Croyle. Not next year, but right now.
Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that the Chiefs believe that Thigpen could topple Croyle for the starting job in 2008.
Thigpen last played on a regular basis at Coastal Carolina, which we didn’t realize even had a football program.

If this is true, it’s a pretty damning indictment on Brodie Croyle’s potential as a starter in this league.

I don’t doubt this at all. Herm has been pretty open about wanting to have competition at a majority of the positions, why not QB when you got a couple young unproven guys with potential on the roster? As long as it’s not Huard, that would just be a complete waste of a season. The brief moments I saw of Thigpen, the guy looks like he can play. His main problem was staying healthy last year.

I have a sneaking suspicion ole Florio was pulling PFT Planet’s collective leg with the Coastal Carolina comment. I’m just hoping it wasn’t our third leg…not that there’s anything wrong with that. Coastal Carolina got a little pub this draft when Jerome Simpson was the first WR (of many) the Bungles added to their roster. They selected him with the 15th of the second round, 46th overall.

Tyler Thigpen?
Hmm…I am not really buying this.
I don’t think KC has really provided Croyle with the opportunity to really be competitive. I think they did some good things in the draft, but I don’t think their offense is going to be anything to speak of this year anyhow.
Open competition is certainly a good thing. If Thigpen can come in there and beat out Croyle and Huard, good on him, but I just don’t see it happening. Croyle needs to play an entire season and since this season is one that probably will be another rebuilding year they might as well take their lumps and go with Croyle a majority of the year and allow Thigpen the last couple of games.
That is, of course, assuming that he doesn’t come out guns blazing this pre-season and destroy everything in his sight that is a defense.

Got free tickets last year 20 rows up 50 yard line for both Vikings Pre-Season games in MN and Thigpen could have been the Vikings #2 QB going into the season had we not traded for Holcomb and had Bollinger already who at the time were both Chili guys who proved him wrong which he hates BTW lol rather have Jackson, Thigpen, and Booty than Ferotte and Bollinger all day everyday!!
I would rather have Thigpen in there than Croyle

Typical offseason non-story. Aside from a tryout for UDFAs, the Chiefs haven’t had any kind of minicamp or anything. So where is this sudden revalation about Thigpen coming from? He’s not out there practing.
If the Chiefs felt that highly about Thigpen, they would have been feeling it all along. We’d have been hearing about him all offseason.

The scary thing here is that it reminds me of a scenario that took place last year in Cleveland where neither guy that won out was expected to have much of an impact.

KC and the Vikings practice against each other during the preseason and everyone liked what they seen of Thigpen. Especially Herm Edwards, Chilly screwed up when he tried to slip him through. I think the kid will compete. I also recall KC snatching Croyle before the Vikings could draft him, then moved up and got Jackson, by the end of the 2008 season they all might be looking for work.

I think the Packers have the next Tom Brady on their roster in Matt Flynn… will he win 3 Superbowls? Probably not.
But I think he could be perfect in the Packers offense. A lowly 7th round pick could become a Pro-Bowler if given the chance. Didn’t get much of a chance to start at LSU behind Jamarcus Russell - who’s athleticism and monster arm better suit a college game rather than the pros - but he reminds me a lot of Brady, with his poise in the pocket.

The Chiefs also brought in Chris Leak to compete. Hopefully, Herm’s mancrush on Croyle will allow for an open competition. That’d be best for the team.

You seriously didn’t know Coastal Carolina had a football team? WR Jerome Simpson was recently drafted fairly high from there, last season DE/DT Greg Peterson was taken from there in the 5th. Thigpen was highly thought of despite his lack of great competition when he came out. If you seriously didn’t know they had a team then you seriously need to reconsider even trying to predict/prognosticate the draft, that’s an embarrassment to not know that.

People are underestimating how bad the Chiefs OL was last year and how bad the Offensive Coordinator was.
They have replaced the OC and there should be 4 new starters on the OL. The OL still won’t be great. They probably need another year with a 1st round draft pick for that, but it will be better than last year.
I think are a lot of people are going to be surprised by the Chiefs offense and Croyle this year. It won’t be the best offense but it will be twice what last year’s offense was.

C’mon brasho… PFT was kidding. Of course they know that Coastal Carolina has a football team. I do need to correct you on Greg Peterson… he did not play at Coastal Carolina. I think he went to North Carolina Central.
As for Thigpen… Minny was a bit surprised and upset that he was claimed off waivers. It’s no secret that he’s going to get a real chance to challenge Croyle for the starting role.

I think Herm Edwards is still hoping he can pry Chad Pennington away from the Jets.
