A reader has passed along to us the following gem from former Cowboys running back Emmitt Smith, regarding the challenges presented by players like Pacman Jones, who’ll be a Cowboy if/when he’s reinstated by Commissioner Roger Goodell.
Says Emmitt: “You can be with the guy and in his ear 24 hours a day, but at the end of the day you can’t be there the whole time.”
Emmitt, thank you for helping us end the day with a smile on our face.

I like how the cowboys website had to translate that for you. You’d think they just wouldn’t have quoted him.

“Get over yourselves, Vox and Downsouther”
Looks like you guys are great at dishing it out, not so great at taking it. That’s ok, kids have plenty of fun doing things they shouldn’t be doing to good people until someone comes along and puts them in their places. Then it’s not so fun, is it? Emmitt speaks the way he speaks and he’s spoken that way every time you’ve ever heard him speak because that’s how he’s spoken since he began speaking. You might as well rag on him because he’s black and from the south, since any speech therapist will tell you that his speech patterns mirror many, many black people that grew up poor in the south.
You guys are always screaming about “role models” but when a really good one pops up, you invariably do your best to tear him down by any and all means necessary. Got news for you guys… ESPN came calling on Emmitt, he didn’t go calling on them and they knew about his speech when they decided to pay him all that money for talking. Emmitt can speak any damn well he pleases because everybody that knows anything about football from the peewees to the pros and all around the world knows who Emmitt Smith is, what he did and how he carried himself while he did it. He makes Cowboys fans smile when they think about it and fans of other teams wish they’d had him. You can’t even deny that basic fact.
“[Walter] is looking down smiling from ear to ear. He once said that if anybody breaks his record, he hopes it is Emmitt because he would do it with the class and the dignity that the record represents,” says Eddie Payton, Walter’s brother, on ESPN Classic’s SportsCentury series.
So go ahead, try to take his dignity away by characterizing him as stupid. Fact is he’s getting paid the big bucks because people care about what he has to say. You’re bitching about him for free on a free blog because you don’t have anything better to do with your life and nobody will ever, ever pay you to talk about anything.

Vox and downsouth, why the anger? Is Emmitt your close friend and/or relative? You two are his agents? Kinda sad that you guys get so worked up over this. Why don’t you two do a little volunteer work at your nearest VA hospital and see if you still think defending Emmitt’s “honor” is what is REALLY important. I can tell you from experience the vets appreciate you coming down and the VA can use the help. It will also give you MUCH needed perspective.

he’s illiterate.
anyone can tell that. he is disqualified unless of course espn just likes paying him so he can also make them look estupido.
anyone see emmitt’s sterling commentary during the draft? i imagine even espn figured wall-to-wall emmittology would debacle them.

duh, Emmitt was obviously not talking about weekends….. lol
If Matt Groening ever runs out of lines for Homer, Emmitt should be employed as chief writer on the Simpsons, - even if he didnt know it.

Vox said to me: Betcha Emmitt can spell “interpretation”. If he can’t, betcha he can pay someone to spell it correctly for him. You can obviously do neither.”
Then vox wrote: “Emmitt can speak any damn well he pleases”

So according to vox’s logic, I should pay an accountant to screw up my taxes and make me pay more money to the government than what I really owe.
Because espn is paying emmitt to speak and he is only screwing up the English language every time he does.

Is it racist to have a good laugh about someone’s inability to speak clearly and concisely if they are black? I can also see that it may be offensive to do so if the person is poor and uneducated, but Emmett shouldn’t fit either of these categories (assuming he actually studied in college). When we’re speaking informally with our friends, family, etc., most of us use slang, etc. and we can all agree that this is acceptable. We’re talking about sporting news, but if your local anchorperson or a subject matter expert on their program began shredding the English language on the air in a similar manner, you would be left scratching your head as to how they could be employed as such. Emmett kind of reminds me of that old In Living Color sketch where Damon Wayans would use a bunch of long, multi-syllable words that made no sense together, ” Allow me to pontificate. The precipitation of the situation is equal and opposite to the maturation of my flatulation (pffffftttt!!!!).”

He’s one of the best running backs in history, a class act, and even a good dancer, but articulate he is not. He’s also one of the most likable people on the field or in the booth, which makes it so much fun to poke fun at him. It’s like joking around with your buddy (except you’ve never met him, he has millions of dollars, and can beat you at any contest of physical prowess).
