In an interview with Peter King of Sports Illustrated, Bengals coach Marvin Lewis reiterated that he has no interest in trading, re-negotiating with or doing anything else that might placate wide receiver Chad Johnson, meaning a showdown is likely coming between the coach and his most vocal player.
“We’ve made it clear what the stance is,” Lewis told King. “It’s not going to change, today or in August, whenever. You cannot allow a player to get up on his high chair with four years left on his contract and demand to get out. If you do that, you set a terrible example for the rest of your team, and we won’t do that.”
Cincinnati picked three wide receivers in this year’s draft: Jerome Simpson of Coastal Carolina in the second round, Andre Caldwell of Florida in the third and Mario Urrutia of Louisville in the seventh. Lewis suggested that the Bengals made those picks not only because of Johnson’s unhappiness and the release of Chris Henry, but also because they are preparing for life without their other starting receiver, T.J. Houshmandzadeh.
“T.J.’s at the end of his contract this year,” Lewis said, per King, “and I don’t know if it’s possible to re-sign him. Chad says he won’t play without a trade. We just have to be prepared for anything this year, and for the future.”
A year or two ago it looked like Johnson and Houshmandzadeh would play their prime years with Carson Palmer as their quarterback. But it’s now looking more like Palmer will be breaking in a whole new set of receivers sooner rather than later.

I’m still in awe that they couldn’t just deal with it and play the game. When you have as good of an offense as Cincinnati’s, especially with Carson Palmer as consistent as he is, you need to realize what is going on. Chad should have jumped at the opportunity to play with such a good QB. Where does Chad think he’ll go? Philadelphia?

shouldve just let chad go. Couldve had two first rounders and who knows maybe more. This pissing match is no good for either the team nor the player. Look at champ bailey when he wanted out of Washington. They let him go and got a great player in return.

Good job on Marvin’s part. They’ve already bent over backwards for Chad and renegotiated his contract while it had a bunch of years left (and paid him very well and fairly). No other team would have done that, or put up with his crap. He’s got a franchise QB and good offense in general. What more does he want? If he quit being such a distraction they might win some more games.

You know what?! F Chad Johnson, bench him, and let him do sit-ups in his driveway. I’d rather have Chris Henry in Philly the Chad Johnson. Marvin Harrison has a nice quiet establishment in town that Chris can frequent and stay out of trouble.

Chad Johnson used to be amusing, now he is just an idiot. Does he not realize that he is UNDER CONTRACT? What has Darth Rosen-Vader been telling him to make him think he can get out of this one? To me it seems the Bengals have dug in their heels on this and are not ready to budge. I have always tried to keep both sides in mind player and team, but this has got to a point where if one of these prima donnas doesn’t like the fact that his coach (the man who is in charge) yells at him and tells him to do something then they bitch and whine that they want to be traded. The 32 teams of the NFL NEED to put their collective foot down on this one or we are headed for a similar fate that the NHL saw…I’m sure none of us here want to see that happen.

Good for the Bengals. I’m a Browns fan, so of course it’s better for us to see Chad riding the pine — but Marvin Lewis is right: you can’t give into a player with time left on his contract just ’cause he has a hissy fit. I say let him deteriorate on the sidelines; make an example out of the boy.

I love the approach the Bengals are taking. I do understand a player’s desire to renegotiate a contract in the NFL as most of the years are not guaranteed, unlike baseball and basketball. However, when you try to do it like Chad or TO, then the teams should make them suffer for the headaches they are causing rather than rewarding the player. Chad would have been better off to show up with his mouth shut and drop every pass or run the wrong routes, etc. for the entire training camp and preseason. Then if he had any real balls, he could do it in a few games too. I think the Bungles would have had a difficult time fining him for poor performance………

This is the wrong place to make a stand Marv. how about one gola line stand. Get some defensive players for the guys who don’t want to be there and be done with it.
Chad Johnson just asked to be traded. He has been unhappy for a while, but has handled it pretty well up to this off season. Why not trade him for some DTs or pass rushers and pay TJ what he is worth instead of always going on the cheap and Bungling every opportunity to improve.

Despite being a Steeler fan, I always liked Chad Johnson. Now, much like T.O., he’s just a clown. Maybe he should take a cue from the ‘new’ T.O. and worry about his (sniffle, waa) quarterback.
Go Steelers!

i would not eat for a day..if TJ leaves! C’mon man..we dont want this franchise to start re-building..i mean..lets be real..if we (bengals) get a top 10 D..we have the potential ( or we would have the potential if everyone on the offensive side stays ) to make a run at super bowl..theres no lack of talent..just put some pieces in Defense together and playoffs and even superbowl is nt too far! TJs agent needs to start talking to the bengals about a contract extension..and get it done…coz i would love to see TJ retire as a bengal..it would piss me off..if he leave next year..and my faith ( which has stayed strong for quite many years) will start spiraling down the drain.! I would then be forced to follow University of Cincinnati football program..MIKE BROWN..please sign TJ!

Too little. Too late. This team has squandered a ton of draft picks on thugs and malcontents under the Lewis regime. NOW Marvin wants to make a change? Please. If they go 5-11, this weekly pounding of the chest Marvin does with the all-too-eager media won’t be enough to save his job. This move does not mend the locker room. It does not solve a problem. It does not make the team more competitive. Every other team in that division got a little bit better this off-season. This could get ugly quick. CJ could stand to listen to some of that free advice that’s being given, but Marvin is a moron if he thinks he can win a stalemate.

I guess I could understand Marvin’s point if Chad was demanding a contract renegotiation, but I was under the impression he is just asking to be traded. So basically, instead of getting something of value for a player that doesn’t want to be there, they are going to make him sit on the sidelines, continue to pay him, allow him to be a distraction via the media?
I suppose they didnt trade him because they’d need to pick up a receiver comparable in talent (especially with Henry booted), and there really werent any in this years draft. But still, if he sits out, then theyre no better off than if they traded him. Less so, because they aren’t getting anything in return by sitting him, yet they still have to pay him.

Bengals keep up the Good work. When Chad & TJ was drafted the bengals were given a D for their draft that year. Chad & TJ are good, but when you have a talent like Carson on the field he will get the ball to any receiver that can get open. Chad can just sit out this year and watch or he can grow up and be a man and play were he signed a contract. I hope we can sign TJ next year, But TJ is a Talent that might go else were. That is what Free agencies is all about and getting the best contract when it is available. He will be 31 next year so he will have couple of good years still left. Go Bengals and Marvin stick with the game plans. I perdict that the Bengals will go to the Super bowl this year.
