When Lions quarterback Jon Kitna predicted last year that the team would win at least 10 games, everyone laughed. Then they stopped laughing when Detroit got off to a 6-2 start — and then they started laughing again when the Lions limped to a 7-9 finish.
Kitna, however, doesn’t care if anyone laughs. And at the Lions’ facilities today, he told reporters that he’s making the 10-win prediction again this year.
“Our expectation is we will be disappointed if we don’t win 10 games,” Kitna said, per the Detroit Free Press. “Because that will mean we’re not in the playoffs … I can’t make it any simpler than that. Anybody who says that’s not their expectations level is unfortunately not that much of a competitor.”
The last time the Lions won 10 games in a season was in 1995, when they finished 10-6 and lost their wild card playoff game.
Kitna also made clear that if the Lions are going to win 10 games, they’ll do it with him under center. Asked if he thinks there’s a competition at quarterback, Kitna answered, “I don’t. I think I’m pretty well established as the leader of this football team and the quarterback. [Head coach] Rod [Marinelli] has never wavered from that. I don’t expect that to be any different this year and I’m pretty excited about where we’re going as a football team.”

Don’t twist his words. He never said he thinks the Lions will win 10 games, he just said it would be disappointing if they don’t. But it would be surprising if they won 10 games though.

The quote is “Our expectation is we will be disappointed if we don’t win 10 games…”. That’s not a prediction, learn the difference Mike.
All players probably on some level expect their team to be better than they have been in previous years, especially quarterbacks. To publically state that you will be disappointed if you don’t win 10 games is not the same as publicly stating that your team *will* win 10 games - that would be an actual prediction.
I’m a Lions fan and I have to say that Kitna is nuts. He’s saying what he’s supopsed to say as the leader of the team, but if he thinks that they’ll win more than 5 games this season he’s nuts. Look for Millen, Marinelli and Kitna to lock up a 2009 top 5 pick by November 2008.

“Our expectation is we will be disappointed if we don’t win 10 games” - That’s a pretty hollow statement. Of course you would be, Jon. Unfortunately for you, losing is a reality b/c you have the worst general manager in sports (now that Isiah has been “reassigned”). The sad part is that you’re the established “leader” of a mediocre team on its best day. You’ll be lucky to start 10 games before being benched for Drew Stanton or the next bust QB of the Lions.

John “Ned Flanders” Kitna will never win a playoff game in Detroit. He is just a big crybaby that will never get it done. I feel bad for Lions fans for having to put up with his BS for this long.

But seriously, anything Kitna says isn’t half as ridiculous as Razon’s expectations for the Packers

Hey, this isn’t the first year he’s said 10 wins, so if you take their wins from last year and their wins for this year, they might be able to total 10 wins. It could happen.

I’d say that its a VERY hollow statement. If anyone is playing word games, it’s Kitna. They expect to be disappointed if they don’t win 10 games. What happens if they win 8 games and their expectations doesn’t live up to reality and they end up being happy winning 8 games? Kitna should keep his yap shut; saying it last season had a novelty to it and probably gave the Lions and their fans a little swagger that they hadn’t had in a while. Do it in consecutive years and it just doesn’t ring the same. He’ll be singing the same song this time next year.

What is he supposed to say, I think we will lose 10 games? He should have making the playoffs as a goal even if history is not on his side, they are still in contention so far.
I like the skill positions on O, they just need to find a RT. And a defense.

31-81 UNDER MILLEN + MORNHINWEG + MARIUCCI + MARINELLI (24-72 UNTIL 2007).
LAST SEASON WITHOUT M+M+M+M? 9-7 UNDER ROSS + MOELLER AND ONE PAUL EDINGER KICK AWAY FROM AN OVERTIME WITH A SHOT TO GO 10-6 AND THE PLAYOFFS.
MAYBE THEY SHOULD HAVE KEPT MOELLER AND OBVIOUSLY NOT HIRED M2.
2008:
WINS: @atl, @sf, TB
MAYBES: GB, CHI, MIN, @hou, WAS, @car, TEN, NO
LOSSES: @gb, @chi, @min, JAC, @ind
SPLIT THE MAYBES… AND 7-9 AT BEST. I thought I was being very charitable.

Would this even be a story if it were say…the Bills, Jets, or heck the Bengals? Who cares? He’s not making a prediction and it is OLD. You said it Florios, he made a similar statement A YEAR AGO. All he is doing is being the leader of his football team.
What is he supposed to say? “I don’t know guys, we might 6. This team hasn’t had a ot of success the past ten years, I am pretty sure we won’t make the playoffs. We should just keep our expectations really low.”

Regardless of how many games they will win, I’m disappointed in you, Mike ‘Emmitt’ Florio, for twisting his words like a common, cheap columnist. Especially since you are a lawyer, a profession known for being exact with words. “Expect” and “if” aren’t part of predictions. You know better.
