The Saints announced on Monday that owner Tom Benson has purchased the local FOX affiliate in New Orleans. Benson acquired WVUE-TV from Emmis Communications, a media conglomerate headquartered in Indianapolis.
The full text of the statement has been posted on the Saints’ official web site.
The announcement explains that Benson has created the Louisiana Media Company, which will focus on the acquisition of radio and television stations and movie production, and will be headquartered in New Orleans.
The fact that the move has been trumpeted by Benson’s NFL franchise suggests to us that there’s a strong P.R. component to this — and that the goal in announcing it so aggressively could be to calm any local concerns that the Saints eventually and inevitably will pack up and move. Consider this excerpt from the official release:
“Benson, a New Orleanian and the owner of the New Orleans Saints, cites his unwavering belief in the recovery and rebirth of his native city by agreeing to purchase, in partnership with like-minded business and civic leaders, one of the most powerful local television stations in the market.
“Although Benson is spearheading the purchase of WVUE-TV Fox 8, he believes that having a local group of investors join him in this acquisition will be another example of his commitment to strengthen the bond between the station and the marketplace.
“With his business interests ranging from the New Orleans Saints and New Orleans VooDoo to automotive dealerships, real estate and banking, Benson will embrace the challenges of owning a broadcasting platform with the same zeal that he has demonstrated throughout his lifetime: with the unwavering goal of placing the city of New Orleans, the State of Louisiana and the Gulf Coast region at the forefront of the national landscape through community involvement while unrelentingly serving the interests of the local economies, charities and countless civic groups.”
Of course, nothing prevents Benson from selling his interest in WVUE-TV if/when the Saints eventually move to L.A. or some other locale. Or maybe Benson thinks that his ownership of the Louisiana Media Company will help to offset any eventual relocation of his football team.
Regardless, the fact that the Saints are making such a big deal out of this transaction makes us think that it’s part of a broader business strategy that involves the Saints in ways other than the fact that many of their games will be aired on the station that the owner now owns.

Let’s see how this plays out - it wouldn’t be the first time the media has made false reports. Of course for some teams everyone is willing to believe the false reports - other teams seem to be made of teflon.
Of course in this case, given Harrison’s armor piercing bullets, teflon might not be enough.

Very good businees sense where all advertising revenues go to him now. I’d bet he would be good at the game monopoly!!

Talk about conflict of intrest. How will the sports casters for Fox 8 ever be cridical of anything the Saints do now when the guy that signs their paychecks owns the team also. Lets say the Saints sign Chris Henry. Could the sports anchor, on air, openly question the teams
for bringing in a turd? Anyone know if any other Team owner also owns a Major network afiliate and a pro franchies in the same market? If so how imparcial are they?

This sounds like something right out of Dan Snyder’s book. Own the team, then own the people that cover the team. Talk about your conflict of interest.

TCLARK:
I don’t know if there are any NFL owners who own local TV stations, but Ted Turner did it with the Braves and TBS for a very long time.
This is going to be an interesting situation locally (I live in NOLA) because the most popular station here is a CBS affiliate, WWL TV, that shows Saints’ games when they aren’t on FOX. WWL also has an AM radio station that is part of the monstrous Clearchannel network and has been broadcaasting the games for as long as I can remember (probably since the birth of the franchise, but I’d have to check that). With the size of the radio network, games can be heard across the Gulf Coast. The radio broadcasts are hugely popular here to the point that they’re ingrained into our city’s culture (even non-sports fans know what station to listen to the game on). We’re probably not unique in that it’s a tradition to turn down the TV and turn up the radio so we don’t have to listen a couple of douchebags who don’t know anything about our team. Fox now has an affiliated radio station in the area. I think I see where this is going. The optimist in me is hoping that these are all moves by Benson to justify keeping the team here. Since we’re a small market, instead of moving the team to a bigger one, he’ll just try to grab every extra red cent of advertising revenue having anything to do with the Saints games to enhance revenue, a feat that would probably be more difficult in a market like L.A where it might be tougher to buy up the air waves. The state and city aren’t going to give him a stadium deal any time soon, especially with our recovery still ongoing, but the “old curmudgeon” has a pretty sweet situation: he pays no rent or lease and gets 100% of the concessions and parking, plus gets a few million annualy from the state in a deal to keep the team in NOLA.
I’m getting tired of the speculation that our team will be the one to go when Jacksonville can’t even sell out a playoff game. Did you hear me? A playoff game!!! There’s a waiting list to buy season tickets here.

kartell, I agree 100%. I’m giving Benson the benefit of the doubt on this one. He’s been saying to business that they should invest in New Orleans. Now he’s showing that it’s more than lip service. He’s stepping up to the plate.
I too worry about WWL in all this. Benson said that he wants to get radio stations next. What will that mean for the stations currently carrying the games (Cox Sports for preseason TV and WWL for all games on radio). Will Fox 8 turn into the YES network?

Thanks kartell
I should have been more spacific. NBC/CBS/ABC or FOX is what I ment to ask. TBS doesn’t have news do they? I rarely watch anything outside of Football and documentry channles. (I need a life.)

As a Saints fan and NOLA fan, i welcome the move.
We don’t have any quality Saints coverage from the local media anyway. Some of you guys just don’t know what you’re talking about. Take your generalizations and go sit in the corner.

I don’t think the Saints were going to leave New Orleans anyway. In fact, I doubt that the owners committee would have allowed it to begin with. Imagine the PR black eye that would give the NFL, to effectively have the league say, “We’ve given up on New Orleans.”
If I lived in Buffalo, Minnesota, Oakland, or Jacksonville, I’d be somewhat concerned about my home team right now.

I honestly would not be surprised to find that this move and Benson’s new found commitment to New Orleans is in fact due to the success of the New Orleans Hornets. It was one thing to pull up stakes and leave town because no sports franchise could survive in N.O., but it’s quite another to leave town as another franchise thrives. One indicates bad economic luck, the other indicates that you’re a failure. And being a failure is something the prideful Benson simply cannot stand. Times Picayune did a great article on the frosty relationship between the two organizations. http://www.nola.com/timespic/stories/index.ssf?/base/sports-4/120806487018580.xml&coll=1

Congrats to Emmis for finally divesting itself of its TV station ownership, a goal that began a few years ago. As for Benson buying the station, it’s a good investment (in my opinion), particularly as a one-off ownership situation for the local station that will be airing the majority of the Saints games. The cross-ownership sponsorship opportunities that this could create should be most interesting.
