They could have gotten Ben Utech from the Colts. He was a solid guy they could have gotten for cheap. I would love to see Shockey playing for us because his best seasons were under then-offensive coordinator Sean Payton. Plus Brees loves the tight end, he practically help make Antonio Gates!!!

No, keep him in NY!!!! Cannot wait for the Friday morning after my Skins beat the G-Men on opening night and Shockey is telling the NY Post that Eli is overrated. He's a great team guy, after all. If he goes to New Orleans, he'll drink his way right out of the league.

bavaro, you're right about LJ, my bad

how about Troupe, wasn't he available cheaply earlier in the off-season? apparently Fasano was available cheaply. i'm not saying these guys are Shockey-level, but they'd be cheap guys with talent and some upside, without the headcase aspect.

Why not make a play for the Broncos' Daniel Graham? Trade Jammal Brown for Graham and a third rounder that can become a second if Brown makes the Pro Bowl/meets playing time goals. Graham was the top TE free agent a year ago, now he looks like he is just an average player. Two other TE's have moved ahead of him and he is valued just for his blocking in Denver. That's a whole lotta money to throw to just a blocking tight end.
Granted, Graham is coming off of an injury plagued season, but he didn't look like a fit in their offense before he got hurt. I think that he would flourish in the Saints' system. He can attack the seams and free Colston underneath a lot more.

Veggie, The Eagles franchised LJ Smith. There's no way the Saints would give up draft choices AND a ton of money for that oft-injured TE. (Yes, he's injured more than Shock-love).

As an alternative, why don't the Saints try to acquire disgruntled Jets TE, Chris Baker? They can probably get him for a 4th or 5th rounder. He's not as "dynamic" as Shockey (that is, he won't drop touchdowns in big spots), but he's a decent, well rounded TE.

If Payton wanted an injury prone pass-catching TE so bad, he could have signed LJ Smith on the cheap and gotten a quality TE without the Shockey attitude.

The trade won't happen. The Saints want Shockey at a discount. The Giants want to trade him at a premium. He's too good when healthy to be traded at a discount and too injury prone to go for what the Giants want to get, which at this point is probably a 2009 1st rounder and a player. i just can't see the two teams coming to an agreement.

Shock in New Orleans, now that would be great for the NFC South.
A crybaby TE, why would Payton want that?

Nothing would be worse for "Screwdriver Shockey" than playing off Bourbon Street. This is the same guy who was doublefisting drinks during the Super Bowl instead of standing on the sidelines with his teammates. The Saints would be wise to steer clear. Shockey is an injury prone grumbler with a short temper and a tendency to lose interest. This leads him to drop a lot of balls. Besides that, his injury history and his love of the nightlife makes him a poor long term investment. Shockey may be 28 going on 33.
