Though his release by the Seattle Seahawks initially was met with the soothing melody of crickets rubbing their wings together, running back Shaun Alexander is suddenly hearing the chirping of a cell phone instead.
Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that Alexander will follow his visit with the Cincinnati Bengals with a trip to New Orleans, where he’ll visit with the Saints.
The interest in Alexander should be regarded as a bad sign for running back Deuce McAllister, who is recovering from his second torn ACL in three seasons. If Alexander signs, McAllister could be scuttled.
The broader question with Alexander is whether anyone will offer him a deal that he’ll deem to be worthy of his abilities. Our guess is that, in the end, he’ll ink a multi-year deal that will appear to be a big-money package but that on closer inspection will be essentially a one-year deal with a reasonable base salary and lots of incentives.
As we see it, there’s no need for Alexander to rush the process. He’ll avoid all offseason workouts and mandatory minicamps if he doesn’t sign with a team, and his leverage in one or more cities could increase significantly if/when one of the top tailbacks blows out a knee during those non-contact contact practices.

This reminds me a lot of when the seahawks drafted Alexander and Ricky Watters was sent his packing papers. Watters couldn’t find an offer that demanded what he wanted and eventually retired. Man do I feel old for remembering that.

The saints can replace both an older, broken down back and an underachieving back with just one player. Free’s up a roster spot and saves cap room.

If I were Alexander’s agent, I would put together a contract proposal that included a base salary close to the veteran’s minimum, with incentives of $20,000 for each time he runs out of bounds and $30,000 for each carry where he hits the deck before any defender can touch him.

As long as they have him on a season by season deal, he should do well…though if I am remembering correctly, he historically was better around the outside than in the middle, which is where the Saints can really use a presence. On the outside they have the maligned Reggie Bush, but he still has more speed and agility than Alexander at this point.

This would be a good pickup for the Saints. Who knows if McCallister will be healthy this year, and if he can play he surely won’t be as effective. Reggie Bush can’t handle the load, so it would be good to have some insurance.

Please, Bucco, we’ve had enough of a slow RB with little-to-no burst who grew incredibly complacent after getting a big pay day.
I’d rather hope Forte pans out than rely on Shaun or Ced.

diehardbearsfan, Ricky was actually with the Hawks for two seasons after they drafted Shaun. Alexander back him up in 2000, and didn’t get the starting job until Ricky got hurt during the 2001 season.

I agree with Florio. His deal will be similar to Donte Stallworth’s deal with the Pats last year.

Too many people underestimate the value of “the Deuce” in NOLA. Also, they underestimate Loomis and Payton when it comes to looking at players. Deuce on one leg is still better than a healthy Alexander, because the Deuce plays with heart and “balls out” on every play. Plus, he’s already restructured his contract and the team is happy.
Also: see Pierre Thomas
Alexander wants too much money, the Saints will offer him a league minimum 1 year deal at the most. The Saints aren’t hung up on “big names” in free agency even tho they might do their research on them. They certainly won’t cut Deuce just because they signed a declining has been. “Camp Competition” at best, Florio.

I think that if Alexander were to sign with NO it would be close to the league minimum and loaded with incentives. Even if he is signed, he and Deuce would be sharing the load as the power back. Deuce and Shaun are friends dating back to when they played in the SEC and they respect each other. Those guys came out the same year when both were highly touted as top ten picks but slipped far because of injury issues (the questions posed then seemed to be correct now). I think this inquiry into Shaun signals the Saints coming to the realization that Reggie Bush will never be an every down back. He is still dynamic, but more as a receiver like Steve Smith (CAR) or Wes Welker than a 15-20 carry guy. I wouldn’t be surprised that the Saints keep McAllister, Alexander, Bush, Thomas, AND Stecker as backs and maybe keep less wideouts. After Colston, Patten, and Meachem, the rest of the wr corps is expendable. If all of this happens, and it’s a real possibility, Bush will be counted as a wideout and handle all return duties. He will do kickoffs and punt returns. Give Deuce 10 carries and Alexander 8 and give Bush about 3 and Thomas 5 a game.
As for Jeremy Shockey, I don’t think he will be traded to New Orleans unless the Saints give up an offensive lineman like Jammal Brown or package a pick or player with Jonathan Stinchcomb. I think the reason why the Saints picked Carl Nicks was to place him at right guard, move Jahri Evans to left guard and make Jamar Nesbit compete with Jonathan Goodwin for center. I have a feeling the Saints will eventually cut Matt Lehr because the team doesn’t want another Hollis Thomas situation from 2006. Zach Strief is a player on the cusp of starting and he can make Stinchcomb or Brown expendable. Remember, it’s almost time for the Saints to re-sign Brown. They just gave Stinchcomb an extension. It will be interesting to see what will become of this. Keep up the good work Flo.

Pierre has shown that he can run between the tackles and played great in the preseason as well as when it counted. He had limited carries last year, but when they gave him the ball, he was fantastic. He is the future every down back for the Black and Gold, but we’d benefit by Alexander and Duece splitting time in the backfield, and keeping Reggie in space and letting Pierre develop…Shuan and Duece may equal one, over the hill, injury prone, 3 yards/ carry back! He’s also a guy whose played on a superBowl team and brings experience and leadership.

Fundamentalist Football Sheikh, Are you nuts? I’ve never heard such bunk. Do you watch football? Do you follow the Saints? Do you understand Sean payton’s offensive football philosophy? Where do you come up with this stuff? I’m just curious what planet you are on!

Shackney4, that’s an insult dude. I played more football in real life than you’ll ever play on Madden. That’s neither here or there. I mentioned Deuce and Alexander splitting time and you came and posted the same thing. Does it sound better when you write it?
Alexander was a good back, don’t get me wrong, but he wasn’t known too much as a leader. He was thought of as being kind of weird…almost the Ricky Williams kind of weird. He’s a good guy, but he is not a guy that you can point to as a leader without any production from him. He was a leader by example. When his production tailed off, there was no need for his presence as a leader.
Shackney, I mentioned Reggie being used more as a receiver. You said “keeping Reggie in space”. I think that means throwing the ball to him on the flats, some screens, and oh yeah..some downfield passes so he can get isolated on a linebacker.
Dude learn how to actually spell Deuce before you knock me my man.

I know enough about Payton’s philosophy to figure out that he won’t force a round peg into a square hole. He knows Reggie isn’t a conventional every down back and he is more of a satellite type of back, thus the usage of Bush in a lot of motion plays.
I know that Payton still wants to tote the rock 20 to 25 times a game to make his playaction more effective and Drew Brees more efficient. It won’t hurt that it will take some wear and tear of his arm as well.
