Former Illinois running back Rashard Mendenhall was drafted last month by the Steelers. And Mendenhall likely is anxious to move to Pittsburgh, pronto.
Mendenhall was robbed at gunpoint on Monday in Chicago, according to the Sun-Times. He surrendered his phone, cash, and wallet.
“It was obviously a scary moment,” his agent, Mike McCartney, told the Sun-Times. ”But he is fine. He is doing great. He said he doesn’t have anything that is worth his life.”

Wow! Maybe in the next CBA they can include bullet-proof vests, rottweilers, home security systems, plastic surgery, witness protection, police escorts, fines if they sport big jewelry in public, mandatory card carrying - nothing to make it rain!
The jerks of the league are the jerks of the league, but when pro players are the victims of these crimes it seems to be done by the true scum of the slums. Damn, can they live?

Yikes. Seeing him all the time strolling around here he was the type to never, ever be in any situation like that, from what I’ve seen. It must have been a horrifically scary moment.

I don’t have the facts to back up what I’m about to write (much like MF) but it seems to me that Chicago and Pittsburgh - both fine cities - would be roughly equal in the armed robbery per capita department.
However, my city (Chicago) is at the head of the list for “NFL RBs that are extremely polite while being hosed and pepper-sprayed”.

One other point.
While I certainly don’t wish anyone being on the business end of a handgun during a robbery, you increase your chances of becoming a statistic (as Mendenhall did) by walking along a lonely stretch of the lakefront that is separated from the residential areas of the South Side by Lake Shore Drive - a major highway; AND walking in said location at 2:00 AM; AND 3) on a Sunday night/Monday morning.
If I were the Steelers, the question I would ask is “Why was Mendenhall where he was at the time he was?”

Hammy’s too tender to participate in mini-camp, not too tender to be walking around the lakefront at 2am?

The only thing Pittsburgh has going for it is……. wait, can’t think of anything, and I used to live in Coraopolis (suburb). Chicago on the other hand… when it comes to the ladies, the place is a candy factory.
Chicago in the summer = the best place in the world.

This is why players DON”T NEED HAND GUNS. Had he had a gun himself we may be reading a much more tradgic story. Too many people have seen too many movies. Under such an unpredictable terrifying moment even trained gun lovers may get themselves (or others) shot for mear pocket change. I would think he wil be able to replace any stolen property with his frist paycheck. What if you shot at the robber missed and killed an innocent by stander?
I remember reading a story a few years back when a child was shot dead brushing his teeth in his bathroom while preparing for bedtime. The bullet was fired in the alley travled through the wall and struck an innocent child. I belive that was also in Chicago.

timalex99 wins!
Based on the 2006 FBI Uniform Crime Reports (the most reputable source I know after taking a whopping 1.0 credit of Criminology years ago) states:
Robberies Population Rate
Chicago 15,863 2,857,796 0.00555
Pittsburgh 1,722 324,604 0.00530
Mendenhall better avoid the infinite riverfronts in Pittsburgh…

That’s a good point by timalex99. I actually thought of that. My guess is Mendenhall was doing nothing bad.
Then again, whoever would have thought Marvin Harrison would have SHOT A GUN
Sheesh. Like I noted in some other entry, we’re going to have Derrick Jeter test positive for steroids next.

If Mendenhall had a FN like Harrison, he could have just shot the culprits with that nice fancy Belgian hand cannon. Harrison puts Dirty Harry’s Magnum to shame. I for one am hoping for a Dirty Marvin movie. I can see the reviews: “boring character, great gunfight”.
Mendenhall’s 23 on the Wonderlic seems on the nose. Not smart enough to be home in the middle of the night but smart enough to give up his cash. Another victory for standardized testing!

Pittsburgh has actually came a long ways from what it used to be. The city’s look has improved Ron. You should get out of Charlotte more often maybe you would realize that.
BTW where was Chris Henry on the night in question ?
